Good luck! She's easily one of the most attractive, "built for space" Valks around, in my opinion. Here's hoping your triangles are intact, and if not, "I know a guy" who has a few spare shapeways ones from Xigfrid's shop. ;)

The pilots on Frontier called their VF-171 the "Burmuda Triangle". For whoever had the pleasure to pilot one of these birds were never heard from again.

Thanks! I agree it's a great looking machine, particularly in battroid which unfortunately mine will never see!!

Gotta be one of my personal faves!!! Just too afraid to transform it - but it sure is pretty sittin' there waiting for me to zoom it around the room.

Awesome weathering job!

I really do love the design but if I could change one thing, I think it would look (slightly) better if the nose-gear hinged at the rear instead of the front.

It's a small thing but it made a helluva difference to the VF-25 renewals over the ver1s and I'm a sucker for a nice overhang at the front - like the -19!

Yeah, in the movies, any time a CF is wearing armour, it's grey, not purple. The purple is the colour used in the TV series, but only the VF-171EX types (the white ones) had armour. It's very confusing. And in my opinion, would be a simple fix for Bandai to just recolour the armour packs for the CF versions. I mean, they already include the wing parts with hardpoints, so you can't argue the production cost would be too high. It's just different coloured plastic, for Pete's sake!

It was a fun little project. I still would like to finish it as this was just very roughly airbrushing two shades of grey onto the parts and calling it a day. There could be weathering, panel lining, and a whole host of other enhancements to do, if I could find the time.

Aaaa the CF 171. Still one my faves and was also one of my first triplet buys. So sad about the shoulders.

I bought 3 right off the bat myself, but they're all still sealed in their boxes. I'd call them MISB, but I'm sure at least one of them has a cracked triangle. They'll stay in fighter mode indefinitely, even when I find the room to display them.

Should we expect a reissue if a white VF-171 has appeared in Macross Delta?

Maybe the lack of a new mainstay means they'll be focusing on the ace models VF-31 and SV-262 along with their idols rather than mecha porn.

The 171 is how old now? Mayhaps it's getting to the age of the VF-11 circa 2040? (Oh, if only the 11 could make a comeback as this colony's cannon fodder...)

It would be nice to see something else take its place. A mass-produced 19 variant (though I suppose it has too heroic a profile...), or maybe even a mass-produced version of the VF-25 would be neat.

8 years apart from Frontier doesn't really warrant a new mainstay and the VF-31s are still part of the same generation as the YF-24 which was the benchmark technology circa 2058, unlike the generational shift from M7 to F(VF-19 to YF-24) allowed by the time gap.

Furthermore, the VF-171EX variant just rolled out in 2059.

This VF-171EX might be another block model, can't tell if the colour scheme is different though. Would be nice if they have a special NUNS squad with jet black painted VF-171EXs with new weapons for the armored parts.

Maybe new web exclusive VF-25F of a random NUNs version. New super parts perhaps?

They could easily rehash some Frontier molds. I am guessing that after releasing the Delta SquadVF-31 concurrently with the TV series, they have plenty of post-broadcast time to release other things to make way for a movie version.

They have way more time this time round since the VF-31 mould is already definitive unlike the crappy VF-25 v1 moulds.

I would also like to see at least 2 Macross Quarter variants with a new mould.

You do know there is already a VF-25A mass produced variant right?

I didn't, actually. But I thought the VF-25 was still undergoing evaluations (as of Frontier, anyway), hence only PMCs using them. When did the A variant begin to roll out and phase out/supplement the main NUNS 171s?

Couldn't find a dedicated thread for the 171 EX. Lucked out and found a new one with armour parts for $150.

Is the EX one as problematic as the CFs?

only the CF have the exploding triangles, everything else is pretty safe, at least to my knowledge and experience. Check jenius site for additional info.

What are the odds that this would get a worldwide rerelease now that there are rumors of Bandai doing so with older Valkyries...? I still have my original one, but would be more than happy to buy a second with new shoulders.

So, this is Part I of a two part series about how the VF-171 CF can completely explode from looking at it funny.

This is basically a photo diary of my adventures disassembling a shattered knee joint.

Before I get to the knee, here's what happens when you unscrew the hips. They come apart fairly easily, but as you can see, there's a ton of pieces that might fall out and go everywhere. For some reason, they felt the need to pad the lower half of the hip joint with extra plastic pads, instead of molding it to fit directly into the metal thigh. Could be for structural reasons, I guess, but it's a lot of little pieces to do a simple job (Bandai seems to take that as a trademark).

So, to start, here's how the leg looks when it's working fine.

Here's a second view, with a slightly rotated thigh swivel, and color coded parts.

This is the thigh section from my broken leg, still in decent shape, minus the pry marks from trying to get the darn thing apart.

Here's what you see once you get it apart (minus the swivel joint, I'll get to that in a minute).
post-907-0-44759600-1405675318_thumb.jpg
Here, you've got a cover with far too much glue on it, holding together two large tabs. Get that cover off, and the thigh comes apart with a single screw, and you can access the upper thigh joint and hinge pin.

Here's what happened to mine.
post-907-0-44078000-1405675330_thumb.jpg
I've color coded the parts so you can get an idea of how badly it actually broke. The side cover for the knee had the screw shaft shear off, and the red pieces all used to be the large central knee joint cover. Now, it's broken entirely, and you can see the spring ratchet inside the knee.

That pink screw cover is also a pain in the backside. It was overglued horribly, and was literally the only thing holding the entire knee together.
post-907-0-19013700-1405675312_thumb.jpg

Now, why did it fail? Good question. I'd go ask Bandai what they were smoking designing this.
post-907-0-31501500-1405675323_thumb.jpg

So yeah. I seriously doubt there is any hope for this leg at this point, unless I superglue the entire thing permanently into fighter mode (not sounding like a bad option, considering my hate for the 171 transformation).

Part II will be later this weekend. I've taken the shoulder covers and lower triangles off of two 171CFs to compare, and think I know why they break, but that's a long way from learning to fix them.

How do you release blue part from the green part? YesA03F4616-DD3C-48D7-A67E-45BAA702CAAA.jpeg.0d89ac896635d6229f18fc3084abf431.jpeg
