Bolt Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 Honestly, that looks cool. Never saw this before. That is the entirety of the “movie” ?
seti88 Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 Its a trailer, and i suspect to show off movie making skills. Havent heard much else...
electric indigo Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 That trailer is pretty good at hitting the 80s retro future vibe that would fit the subject. The guerrilla trailer thing did work out for the core design team of the fan made GITS intro, who ended up in the production of the 2017 movie.
M'Kyuun Posted April 5, 2019 Posted April 5, 2019 For me, tone wise and by having a completely Asian cast, it hit all the right notes. With a bigger budget, I think these guys could pull off a pretty faithful Akira.
Marzan Posted April 8, 2019 Posted April 8, 2019 When fans nail the spirit and esthetics of the source material better than multibillion dollar studios, its time for Hollywood to take a long hard look at itself.

505thAirborne Posted May 24, 2019 Posted May 24, 2019 This can only go two ways, either a fairly entertaining take on the story or a complete dumpster fire.

Agreed. This has been the case for quite sometime.. It’s difficult to get excited about this now, as Hollywood seems to be clueless when it comes to making really good movies from Anime or Manga..

And seems that kaneda and tetsuo are actual brothers in the show... Hmmm..neo tokyo eh...that means a whole japanese cast? Lol...
Mazinger Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 Wonders if Neo-Tokyo will be as grim-dark as the city in Battle Angel Alita. If so, I need to book some tickets and a hotel.

And make the younger one -- Tetsuo.
Dynaman Posted July 16, 2019 Posted July 16, 2019 And... It's dead again. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2019-07-16/live-action-akira-film-delayed-indefinitely/.149051
TangledThorns Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 Well, the good news is there will be a AKIRA anime series hopefully next year. I'm just hoping its produced well and follows the manga closely. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/akira-anime-series-works-director-katsuhiro-otomo-1222674
Bolt Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 A continuation of the original movie.. very interesting , indeed..
davidwhangchoi Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 should plug this here too since it mentions Akira

electric indigo Posted December 1, 2022 Posted December 1, 2022 We're not gletting closer to a new Akira adaption, which is probably a good thing, but here's an interesting attempt to visualize live action Akira characters by AI art:
TangledThorns Posted December 1, 2022 Posted December 1, 2022 Interesting. Just wish to know if the AKIRA anime series announced back in 2019 is still in development or not? Probably killed or delayed by COVID, ugh.
TehPW Posted December 1, 2022 Posted December 1, 2022 we might get Ikea the Furniture series before anything else 😕

Thom Posted Saturday at 02:02 PM Posted Saturday at 02:02 PM Never interested in the anime, but having it go back to the original publisher could be the best thing. I think it would do better in the smaller Japanese market where there would be far more of a fan-base. Bringing it over here just got it lost amid the Hollywood Shuffle. Plus, if it was made here, you'd probably have another Ghost in the Shell, with its divisive reception.
Bolt Posted Saturday at 02:34 PM Posted Saturday at 02:34 PM This may create a fever dream of possibilities in Hollywood. Someone might be thinking, "now's our chance.." I was never too excited over the live action idea. Between the manga and the anime. It's as good as it could ever be. IMO. But the wasteland of creativity in the film industry surely has some execs pondering the renewed potential. Whether we like it or not.

Hollywood's track record with anime is so bad that all I can do is celebrate the demise of a project like this. The odds of it being another dumpster fire like Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball Evolution, or Speed Racer are far higher than the odds of them producing anything watchable.
TangledThorns Posted Saturday at 06:46 PM Posted Saturday at 06:46 PM The anime series that follows the manga closely would be more ideal. I think that got cancelled too, ugh.

Akira has hopefully been spared the fate of joining that particularly inauspicious brotherhood.
