The Spacy Thread

Wow, Argonaut Software. I guess you could consider this one to be an older relative to Star Fox for SNES, huh?

Yeah it is, thanks for pointing out that link, I never knew about it before. I guess that the Amiga developers had to go somewhere (ie, where there was money)

Listen to me getting sentimental....

I'm looking at the red one there, and... I see the cockpit and partial nose cone from a VF-1. Am I seeing things, or am I like those people who see the hory floating head in objects?

Both.

Ponder this: how many different ways is there to draw a bubble canopy cockpit as simply as possible?

normally find trek designs dull, but i kinda fancy this one:

gryphon.jpg

Just curious, is that a fan design? In the main Trek saga Federation fighters only make a very short 1 to 2 scene appearance in DS9 making an attack run on a Caradassian cruiser.

I didn't bother googling, since the launch of Star Trek Online, one of the Fleet Escorts have been named the Gryphon class - and it's butt ugly....

So neat in a weird retro way that it deserves a mention:

Snowspeeder.jpg

OK, technically not Spacy, but I always loved the snowspeeder designs. I think it is the big-arse guns that run the entire length of the speeder that set them off. The Imperial Walkers must have had excellent armour to be impervious to those babies.......

I Really, really detest just about every ship design coming out of both star wars and star trek.

Now for some really great spacecraft from two really awful movies.

First up, the bubble fighter from 1998's lost in space. While these things take up about 30 seconds of the movies 130 minute run time, that represents about 25% of this lackluster TV remakes watchable footage (the other 75% being the robot).

And one of the most beautiful space ships from one of the most disappointing science fiction films ever made. The U.S.S. Cygnus from 1979's The Black Hole

aw come on,some trek and wars ships are pretty nice, even EU craft.

For some reason that bubble-fighter reminded me of the space ships used in that backstreet boys music video for 'larger then life' lol

Cosmo Ship EXELION gets my vote while being escorted by its fleet and 2 Buster machines!!

To those who posted the New Galactica & Roger Young from Starship troopers, you are awesome!!

wooo!, yeah man,the roger young rocks,I actually like pretty much all the starship troopers craft, there are some in the film that i cant find pictures for tho that were cool.

Yes, this thread does not have enough Executor love. I am still hoping for Fine Molds to make one.

For the Starcraft Terran Battlecruiser, the SC2 ones are better rendered but I prefer the slightly more vanilla design from SC1.

Nobody mentioned LOGH/Heldensagan von Komsnosinsal (sp?) yet? Some of their ship designs were pretty cool (not Brunhilde, I prefer the more blocky ones). I paid through my butt for a few boxes of those completed and painted ships from Wave.

And anyone remembered FASA's Renegade Legion? I had the starship technical readout for it. Some of the ships designs were pretty nice. TOG battleship Shiva class, Commonwealth Battlecruiser Repulse and some of the Heavy Cruisers and stuff. The 'Fluttering Petal' heavy fighter was quite cool too. I can't find a good site on the net for Renegade Legion artwork.

Did I mention the Executor yet?

WOW, thats a BIG regular Star Destroyer next to it.....

And it must have the slowest tractor beam in history, not able to lock onto the Falcon when it was flying sooooooo close.......

Speaking of red shirts... I feel that Trek is a bit under-represented here. Sure, technically Starfleet is an exploration agency with some defense responsibilities, but they did deliver a few pure warships.

defiant-class-ventral.jpg

The Defiant was just incredible, a few spurts of its phaser cannons could bring down a ship three times its size.

Still pictures just don't do this "tough little ship" justice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50d18pM4Rec&feature=related

Simply put, the most kick-ass, tough-as-nails ship ever in all of Starfleet. B))

Man those SG ships are UGLY.

So true... what were they thinking?

Heathens. The both of you!

What, no love for the Dwarf?

Well, I always liked this guy better

starbug2_800.jpg

Agreed, I always preferred the Bug. Not quite as isolating as the idea of being the only human being on the ship five miles long (give or take a few seasons), but much more entertaining. I always enjoyed the scene with Kochanski and the pipes :D

Starbug, Millenium Falcon, Eagle-5, Serenity... I love all these space-winnebago's :) Gritty industrial use trumps shiny explody glass panels every day B))

EDIT: And, just to prove to you godless heathens that the SG-verse has the awesomest TV ships that ever awsed, I present you with the star of the latest show:

sorry, no idea if it's a fan design, nor can i remember where i picked up that image.

but looking at the "copyright" text at the bottom right, i'd say it's fan made and probably made for a star trek game mod.

I was wondering when the Cygnus would make an appearance. whether you like or hate the movie, it's a pretty recognizable and memorable design.

Disappointing, though? I don't think it was so bad, for what amouts to a childrens' movie--it is a Disney movie, after all.

Never liked the Hammerhead from Space: A&B though. Showing them parked them next to F/A-18s on the tarmac early on in the series only made them look even more fake and toy-like. All I could think when I saw them was: okay, they're just engines and a cockpit--where the hell are the fuel, weapons, munitions, avionics and such gonna go?

Coincidentally, hindsight and logical thinking apply the same obstacles to suspension-of-disbelief for the orig Colonial Vipers---but not nearly as much so. I suppose it's something that has to be conceded to the time/budget/material constraints placed on TV production.

i love the Hammerhead, I ruly do. id love to see S: A&B brought back, I think with todays budgets they could do such a cool show.

As for SG ships; I just love the designs. i dig the Daedelus more than the Prometheus, but the Pro was nice too. But then im a SG fanboy, and once they started going to space more I was eeven happier, so it may be just the fanboy in me talking.

Echoed.

They named the ships Daedelus and Prometheus in SG? Is there some kind of reason those two ships are so closely related in naming conventions, or are they just drawing inspiration from SDF-Macross? (or did SDF-Macross draw inspiration from an earlier work?)

Macross draws inspiration from Greek myth! zomg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheus

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daedalus

Now, the real question is: did the producers deliberately choose the names as they are anime fans - and Macross is one of the more recognizeable ones?

I think that it was pretty close to being a true classic. It was an interesting way for Disney to answer to Star Wars. SFX were great, the overall story idea was interesting. But there were several times you could tell that the cast was at a loss as to what was going on.

AND Maximillian was a truly awesome robot design.

I know that those names come from Greek mythology, smartass... ^_^

What I mean is that they used both names in tandem, even though those two mythological figures aren't really related to each other.

I say disappointing because there was so much right about the black hole and so much potential to the movie, but it ultimately falls flat. the design work was good, the concept was good. A lot of the acting, a good chunk of the effects (i.e. any time old BOB/VINCENT are on screen) and the overall execution are just poor. The had the makings of an excellent film and they didn't pull it off.

THIS! nothing bugs me more than shows with ridiculously undersized space fighters. It's pretty much my main reason for liking animated Science fiction over live action.

I understand that it's a TV show with a TV show budget and it's expensive to build a life size shooting model the size of a modern fighter jet, but come on, things like the Vipers in BSG are just ridiculously tiny.

as for stargate, I think they're ugly ships, but I like them that way. they look like very no-nonsense, practical space battleships.

I think its possible that fighters may be really tiny. Don't for get that the Mercury Capsule was "worn" rather than "rode".

And don't forget, this is a spacecraft that was made before miniturisation had become truly effective. I imagine that you could build a capsule today the same relative size with much more in the way of components in it. So why not space fighters?
