taksraven Posted February 9, 2010 Share Posted February 9, 2010 OK, we have been dancing around this for a long time in the "Worst SF film of all time" thread, I think its time for us to take a deep breath, and out ourselves by telling everybody else what you think is the best SF film of all time. NO lists! NO Top 5's. Just suck it up and let it out. Narrow it down to ONE film. Doesn't matter if anybody else has put it forward, thats ok. Give reasons if you want. It might stop you from looking too silly. I started it so I'll go first. Best SF film of all time in my books is ALIENS. The simple reason is, when I was watching it on TV a few weeks ago with the family, my "This bits cool!" observations were coming so thick and fast by the end (at least every 30 seconds by the climax), I thought to myself, do we need any other SF films other than this? Jim Cameron shows how it should be done and there is nothing I can really fault with this film. Yeah, I know that there are more realistic films, whatever, this is the one that does it for me. Plus I think I was at the exact right age when I saw it. I saw it on a double bill with The Fly and I stayed to watch it again. There's lots of sci-fi I love, but above all them I still get chills when the flame-spewing L.A. cityscape first appears and Vangelis' score comes up in the surround speakers. I dont want to argue, but I will let it be known that I don't consider Star Wars a piece of science fiction. As for the best SF, I would say Contact was one of the best SF movies made. Metropolis to Repo Man? So, going completely off the cuff, I'm gonna say Alphaville. Very weird, very cool, and thoroughly engrossing. In a lot of ways, it's no great shakes: dystopian society where emotion is forbidden blah blah blah, but it's so icily bizarre that it really works in a way that no other film of its type does. Star Wars is a fantastic movie set in space (or in this case a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away ) but it's not really science fiction in the way of Blade Runner, Space Odissey or Alien. Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, made in (I think) 1965. In a lot of ways, it's no great shakes: dystopian society where emotion is forbidden blah blah blah, but it's so icily bizarre that it really works in a way that no other film of its type does. Always No1 in my top 5 (the rest being Blade Runner, Alien, Gattaca and Macross:DYRL? and sometimes Akira) You can bag it out for the 70s styling or acting, but everything about it remains magic to me. From the opening title scroll and the pan down to the rebel ship being chased by the Empire, through to the assault on the Death Star, it was truly 'epic' in the real sense of the word. I mean - I'm really surprised that no one but me sees the obvious - that Dissapearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, which is set to come out this year (I think) - is the greatest SC-fi movie of all time. I notice that NONE OF YOU have made ANY arguments to the contrary - choosing instead to ignore the elephant in the room... just proof perfect that you guys can't come up with a single good reason why it's not. I was nine when I saw a tiny b/w photo in a magazine of the Space Jockey that had grown into his seat - I had nightmares for three days. Other pictures that haunted me where the strange orifices is the alien ship, the extendible jaws, the alien eggs, the doomed anti-hero crew in their Snowy White coffins - all just photos, years before I saw the movie. Later I got my hands on a book of the concept design for this movie, which introduced me to that field of work. Then came the photo novel, and I did not dare to look at the pictures of the split skull at the end. And when I finally saw it in the cinema around '84, it did surpass my expectations. "Odyssey" and "Star Wars" were great, but the did show me stuff in motion I'd seen before in illustrations, book covers or comics, but Ridley Scott and Giger opened up a door to an entirely different world.
