DX Chogokin VF-31A Kairos - Macross Delta 10th Anniversary
Chronocidal replied to MKT's topic in Toys
I think I did grab one of these from AE at release, but we'll see how that goes. If they show up in the Amazon bargain bin, I'll probably grab a couple more for customizing. Those stands are an interesting thing, though. As much as I appreciate the half-assed attempt at making the stands slightly less ducking fugly by making the mounts out of transparent plastic, I just can't trust them. The first time I mounted a VF-1 on one, that clear plastic started a stress fracture right at the connection point. Still a decent base to build a better mount onto, but those chonky plastic cradles have always looked terrible to me, and I'd rather either use landing gear, or stand the valks vertically on their feet. -

I got my Tread pre-ordered with Nin-Nin back at the initial pre-order, and have yet to hear from them about any shipping option, so I'm biding my time. I asked about shipping when it came in, and they said something about their warehouse shipping working.. not like any other site I've seen with a warehouse option. Something about shipping out as a bulk order at the end of the month? I don't know. But that was right as the tariffs hit, and I held off trying to ship it, since I don't know if they ever worked out a method. Then holiday travel happened. Hopefully I can actually get it shipped out soon.

Yes, I thought we would have heard of a reissue already... Hopefully Sentinel has something up their sleeve.

Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
Seto Kaiba replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
"Transitional" feels like the wrong word for it. After all, real(istic) robot anime didn't exist as a genre before the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. They were defining what it meant to be a non-super robot anime as they went and everyone that came after built on that concept. Mobile Suit Gundam made a clean break with a lot of iconic super robot tropes. The titular robot was a military prototype built for a morally ambiguous war between humans and a weapon based on explicable, reproduceable, practical technology meant for mass production. Its capabilities were impressive, but finite and limited by its specs. Its weapons were only what you could see and did not exceed the capabilities of more conventional platforms. It wasn't Earth's sole defender or even necessarily involved in many key conflicts. Super Dimension Fortress Macross went a fair bit further with the idea by having the Valkyries and Destroids already be mass produced weapons before the war started and by putting more detail into the designs themselves that emphasize their practicality and both "real" vehicles and military hardware. In his Macross Design Works book, Shoji Kawamori talks a bit about how the design of the VF-1 entered unprecedented territory by including realistic details emphasizing its practical use like its aerodynamic control surfaces, landing gear, or the way various parts of it fold or open for maintenance and storage. They went further than simply putting a giant robot into a realistic setting and emphasized trying to make the robot itself feel more grounded and believable as a practical weapon of war. That same unusual attention to detail shows up in Miyatake's designs for the Destroids too. Not only did they prioritize having a clear design lineage and show common platforms in use for different purposes, they went as far as figuring out things like how the various joints should be articulated, where the ammunition for certain weapons are stored and how the feed systems work, and even giving them realistic military bumper codes and bumper numbers based on US military formation markings. (That same attention to detail even extends to the Zentradi mecha, where Macross's creators even bothered to sit down and figure out how the Zentradi forces markings would work and even how they would record kill marks.) -
Were sales good enough for a reissue? It sure seems like it sold out really fast on the initial release.

Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!

I'd probably describe the original Gundam as "transitional". It wanted to not be a super robot show, but couldn't fully escape the genre trappings, and landed in what would now be considered a gray area. -

General Sci-fi designs across various media
F-ZeroOne replied to M'Kyuun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Talk of British SF in general, and a documentary about a certain comic I rewatched over Christmas, reminded me of a couple designs. "2000AD" - The Galaxys Greatest Comic - is perhaps oddly despite being a SF anthology work not overly well known for its iconic designs but there are a few that spring to mind. Judge Dredds Lawmaster motorcycle, for example (which has existed in various guides over the years). Theres also the Blitzspear from "Nemesis the Warlock", an early example at least for me of a biological/technological hybrid and finally and perhaps the least known but very much from the "industrial everyday work thing" of spaceship construction, the "Speedo Ghost" from "Ace Trucking Co". -
Or Tread reissue.

I’m honestly a bit confused by the purpose. It appears to be a recon unit in fighter mode, yet close combat in soldier mode. I guess it would be a bit cliche if it was a sniper in soldier mode, but close combat just seems like an odd choice. Not gonna ruin your fun, just a little confused by the choice in design and purpose. But if you don’t mind, then that’s really all that matters. Have fun with your toys and don’t let any of us ruin that for you

Definite preorder. I figure translators will likely only get better, so even if the translations are problematic now . . .

Too much going on with that design. a dish that becomes a shield with a gun that looks like a lance. Oddly long and weirdly angled canards. Forward swept wings with guns at the tip? And it's wearing what looks like some kind of Aussie sports uniform/tracksuit.

Well.... Wifey-Clause was good to me! 😂 Somewhere she found a tiny little Hasegawa 1/72 Kawasaki Ki-61 model kit from 1980, still sealed up. I did some research and it was originally a Revell Great Britain kit dating allllll the way back to 1963! This one was a repop from Japan 🇯🇵 in 1980 apparently after Hasegawa copied the mold in the mid 70s. And then she got me this.... The Beast....Tamiya 1/48 F-35A....I've heard this is one of the best engineered kits to ever come out so I'm sure I'll find a way to screw it up! 😁 😂
