The Newbie and Short Questions thread
PixelatedShinobi replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
Hey, everyone! I'm coming to you all with a request for assistance, because I'm at the start of a huge new project, and need help to make it the best it can be. Specifically, I'm working with (paying) TrafalgarLog, a prolific Gundam translator, for a full translation of Macross the Ride, serialized from 2010-2011 in Dengeki Hobby Magazine. Log has the print bound versions of both 1 and 2, but we'd like to include the specific Chapter Illustrations (of which one is pictured below). However, these are only in black and white in the print versions, and to our understanding were only in Dengeki magazine and possibly their webpage. We only have 1 and 3. Does anyone here have old Dengeki issues with these illustrations and would be willing to scan them, or has scans already, or knows where scans or digital uploads could be found? https://bsky.app/profile/trafalgarlog.bsky.social (The translator's bsky, to provide some indication I'm not just bullshitting. I'm very committed and serious about this.)- 7134 replies

I’ve been checking every night for a couple days at the usual spots and haven’t seen the preorders open yet, but this morning I saw it at BBTS and got a couple since it seemed like a decent price for them since they upcharge. I was kinda expecting closer to, if not more than a hundred bucks at U.S. stores, but was happy that it’s much lower than I expected and oddly enough seems sooner than most of the Japanese sites

Oh wow, that was quite a masking endeavor! Did you build that figure? It looks fantastic! So just mixing flat white with the flesh color, huh? I'm thinking... Perhaps I'm wrong, but I kinda like Rei being pinkish and Asuka being orangeish like in that photo, but I'm the last person to make a solid judgment on colors. So Papa Rat, fleshtones can be obtained with either fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink. It sounds weird, but that's what does it. Add in flat white with a bit of tan color to the shade you want. Different variations can be obtained too. In the picture below of the Eggplane Girl, to obtain that Chinese skintone with Mr. Color paints, I added Fluorescent Orange and Flat White to a base of Sandy Yellow. For the Nadia I'm working on that Tekering printed for me, I'm using Tamiya colors; Light Brown, Flat White, and Orange.

The VF-25 is such a good design. It was so unfair to the VF-31 to have to follow up on that. That said, I already have tons of the 1/72, from both Bandai and Hasegawa. I don't know if I need another, in a smaller scale, that's likely less nicely molded. (The YF-29 was a bit of a disappointment and soured me on this line's take on the newer designs.)

IMO it's pretty great if you mix it with white.

@SteveTheFish Hey Thanks!

Mr. Color 111 and 112 are the easiest fleshtones to go with. Use 112 as the base and 111 on top. Tamiya's flesh color is not good for anime figures at all, so stay away from that. Mr. Color makes other fleshtone paints as well as Gaia Notes. I suppose Vallejo does too, but I am not familiar with that brand of paint. I have that same kit as well, but I haven't really looked at it yet. Go with a dark green first and then highlight it with the lighter green. I'm colorblind, so you'd be better following your own instincts with that. Or you can use dark green artist chalk to go over the recesses in the hair sculpt.

@SteveTheFish Thanks so much for the advice. I have some simple green degreaser I plan on using on the resin giving it a nice soak and a tooth brush scrub when the time comes for me to start the painting process. I’m excited for it. I’ll have to look up some tips on painting anime figures skin tones and hair shading. It did come with eye decals which is nice and convenient. 👁️🗨️👁️🗨️ @Big s 🤘horns up

Okay, finished the last episode: the whole third season felt kinda unnecessary. Genndy can do whatever he wants to; they’re his creations after all. But the only stuff that kept my interest was with Mira and the Dino’s. I’m not disagreeing with the plausibility of everything that happened. Just that I was cool with the bittersweet ending of Season 2. Kinda already hinted that none of the mains would die, so that kinda killed some of the suspense.

Kinda surprised they haven't at least announced the final VF-31 yet. Hopefully that's coming along with the other two VF-25S

Thank you for catching my mistake! The wings already have the 012 decals on them as they should. I made a mistake without looking at the instructions when I put the 013 decals down on the other parts. I used Mr. Mark Softer, then scraped them off carefully with my hobby blade. Yesterday I put the proper 012 decals where they need to be. Thanks! @Papa Rat Make sure you scrub Millia with detergent an pumice powder with warm water, but be careful with the hair. The frustrating thing with resin figures is when you lift masking tape off and it yanks the paint down to the bare resin. Soak the parts in hobby-grade lacquer thinner for a bit too if you can. The parts of plastic model kits by Japanese makers don't need to be washed, but resin kits certainly do. I wash the parts, then wash them again. After doing all the sanding, wash them again!

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
mikeszekely replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It's not just big ol' Constructions I picked up lately. I got a new batch of Dr. Wu guys for you. First up is Grasshooper (my typo is intentional, I have no clue if the Doctor's was), a very tiny Kickback. I'm not kidding when I say "very tiny." It's hard to find stuff to compare the Dr Wu stuff with... other Dr. Wu figures are fairly similar in size (their Bumblebee is roughly two heads shorter than their Optimus), and comparing one little dude to another little dude might give you an idea of how your display might look but it fails to capture the true smallness. So, here he is with Legacy Kickback. It might also be fair to tell you that he's slightly shorter than AotP Sureshot's Targetmaster buddy, or a little taller than a Titan Master. It's hard to see details on a figure that tiny, so let's zoom in for a closer look. The little molded details on his shins and forearms are not unwelcome in my book, but they're also not exactly cartoon-accurate. The colors are good, though, and the molded details on his torso are more cartoon accurate. I'm not sure why his abs are silver, though. It's not super common with Dr. Wu figures, but Kickback does in fact come with a gun. It doesn't have a ton of detail, and what's there is kind of soft, but it feels petty to complain about that on an accessory that's no longer than my thumbnail. Grasshooper's head can swivel, no tilt. His shoulders are ball joints that swivel and move 90 degrees laterally. He also ball joints for elbows than both bend 90 degrees and act as bicep swivels. No hand or wrist articulation, though. His waist swivels. His hips are more ball joints that bend over 90 degrees forward and backward, but only about 60 degrees laterally. He lacks thigh swivels. His knees bend about 60 degrees. He has no foot or ankle articulation. So... not great by most 3P standards. Not great compared to his Deluxe-class counterpart. But, compared to figures his size, like a Titan Master, a Target Master, or a Micromaster? I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't like for Dr. Wu to do better, because I've seen him do better, but I'm still a lot more forgiving about a lack of ankle pivots on a figure this small than, say, a Studio Series Deluxe. As for his gun, Grasshooper's tiny fists are maybe too small for a peg hole. Instead, the handle of his gun is sort of claw-shaped. The claw fists around his fist and kind of c-clips into place. Kickback doesn't have a particularly complex transformation, and Grasshooper keeps it that way. In fact, there are some things that are simpler than the Legacy version. He doesn't have the mask on his back to cover his robot face, and his middle leg is attached to the back of his forearm with his fists still visible. I can find no way to fold his robot feet up. But hey, his lower legs slide up over his thighs, which I wish the Legacy toy did. I do wish the feet folded in. I also wish his antenna could swivel, but I guess they're too delicate at this size. But other than that, I think he works pretty well given his size. I'm not too bothered by the visible robot fists, or the fact that the front legs are black instead of purple. There is, however, nowhere to store his gun in this mode. And he doesn't do much. He just is, and that's fine. I mean, Kickback's always sort of been the most boring, basic Insecticon. Grasshooper is just doing its best to be that boring, basic design in a teeny tiny package... a package with teeny, tiny flaws that probably wouldn't fly on a larger or more expensive figure, but can be overlooked on a 2" tall robot that comes with a second robot for under $30. And, assuming you want the other guy and he's good, I can recommend Grasshooper. As for that other guy... well, it's not another Insecticon. So, spoilers, I'm going to cover the other two Insecticons first. When I'm done, I'll talk about their packed-in partners.- 9516 replies

Kitz Concept Toy Thread 2.0
tekering replied to Stampeed Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It certainly won't be 1:72, then... at least, according to all the official stats. If it actually fits his 4-inch Khyron figure, it'll have to be much larger than Hasegawa's 1:72 Glaug... and almost twice as large as Bandai's 1:72 Glaug. 🤨- 2714 replies

I heard it was D+. They don’t exactly have a great track record for their shows, but it seems like they got a lot of the original people involved, so who knows -

If it goes to streaming on a service like Netflix or Disney+, it can truly honor the legacy of the original by getting cancelled after one season.
