I remember having a discussion like this years ago. The consensus then was that the fights also had very different meaning. Ever saber battle in the OT was not just a fight of weapons, but of words and emotions. Ep IV: OBI-WAN new he couldn't make it out alive, he was buying the others time to escape and distracting Vader from the force presence of Luke, drawing the fight out by talking to him and appealing to what was left of his humanity. Ultimately he sacrifices himself to drive Luke forward and to "become one" with the force as a way to continue to teach Luke. Ep V: Vader is trying to turn Luke to the darkside, demonstrating the power he possesses. He is on the defensive for most of the saber fight, drawing out Luke's anger and frustration until the climax where he begins to make him more and more like himself before revealing the truth of their relationship. Ep VI: Luke is trying to save his father and draw him back to the light. He doesn't start going balls out to kill Vader until he realizes that if he fails that Vader will go after Leia, and since she is untrained, will probably turn her. Even then, his hack attack style fails once he sees just what that level of anger does to a person, then the Emperor goes balls out to kill him with force lightening. Ep I: There's no drama to the fight, it's just a fight, no philosophical goal, just good vs evil, the fighting is more frantic every blow is intended to be a killing blow. Ep II: More of the same, with the Dooku/Anaking fighting hinting towards trying to turn him, but even then, the frantic style of Anakin prevents that. EpIII: More the same to the extreme, jedi bouncing all over, Anakin straight up murdering Dooku, but again no major discussion to try and sway the other. Even the Anakin/Obi-Wan fight was all jumping and dancing about, with little attempt to draw Anakin back from the darkside, more just the two of them whining at each other.

Makes sense, except we still never see Vader or Obi-Wan doing any of the prequel level moves in the OT. Now maybe we can chalk that up to age, immobility of his robotic form, but it still is jarring to see the style differences. Luke definitely had no style to his combat with the saber, it was all hacking attacks for the most part, the baseball bat analogy works there. I wonder if we will see him and his student(s) having a more refined technique in Ep VII?

Ghost in the Shell Live Action - March 31, 2017
Knight26 replied to Mechinyun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well look at it this way, if it is good and ScarJo decides to skip on the next one, they can always say that she got a new body and find and actress that can play a more faithful Kusanagi. Also, GitS has a fair number of nude scenes, and aside from some poorly lit shots in Under the Skin, this should give everyone a nice look at her goods, LOL- 751 replies

I do love that flight suit design

Looks a lot like that movie Epic that came a year or two ago, only with worse music and less heart.

While I am not wild about the red it is getting the best feed back. Anyway, I reset the fighter scene and added them back in, two different options here, with maybe some sub-options. I do plan to add some engine exhausts, and maybe course trails. Thoughts? set1 set2 I am thinking maybe the lead from option 2 with the trail from option 1.
-
I moved the temporary fighters around (will rerender later) and moved some other bits around too, I also lightened the armor and added a glow around the characters. THoughts? Red nebula (Suggested elsewhere) Put the groundplane back, not sure if it should remain.
-
well he is actually smaller, but yeah I need to figure how to show him being further away, might need to add a ground plane back in

I wouldn't say that it failed so much, as that it wasn't successful, there is a difference. I think FX wanted to try and make them anti-heroes, hence the whole drug thing, but the shows production staff and writer didn't see it that way and ended up adapting other stories to fit the Archer Vice concept. That made things go off rails a bit. It almost became old school Archer again with the last few episodes and now we will go back to what we love. I don't mind a show/characters growing and changing, but the change/evolution has to be natural and flow well. The Archer Vice change was too abrupt and didn't flow.

So Tovette over on sci-fi meshes posted some concept sketches for how I could improve the cover. These are pretty rough right now. I did them while in the vanpool heading home. But I did some mockups based on Tovette's sketches. I haven't added the swooshes yet because I need to figure out how, and how to not make them look like garbage. His sketches: V1 V2 V3

The Archer Vice season was not their strongest, but it kind of made up for it at the end. I look foward to the show coming back. Also A1 is right Coke addicts are nuts, and Pam's addiction, while handled in a more comedic way, was pretty spot on. Still surprised that Archer didn't enjoy Pam's fitter form more after how he and she hooked up before, and it was the mindblowingly good $e* he'd ever had. Pam going fat again doesn't surprise me though, with the Coke out of her system she would plump right back up without serious lifestyle changes. We need to have A1 cameo as Pam's personal trainer and get Pam back in shape around the mid-season. I am glad their going back to their old spy ways, in the new not ISIS spy company. Let the Archer hijinks commence.

Star Trek Beyond (the not The Search for Spock)
Knight26 replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Ultimately Star Trek belongs on the small screen. It was created as a medium for up and coming writers to use as a playground, all the while pushing Gene Rodenberry's message of utopia through human cooperation. Not a bad way to do business. They could have done both though, if done properly. A big screen blockbuster every few years telling the big story or capping off a multi-season arc, while doing the smaller, more personal stories that build up the characters on the small screen. But let's face it, the producers, actors, etc... would never go for that, not since most of them are movie people primarily. I feel the same way about most of the comic book properties as well, DC especially. For the most part, they work better on the small screen, telling the little stories and working into larger arcs, then the horrid SFX laden huge big screen movies.- 466 replies

damn flight delays, just cut off the stupid broken landing light

updated, update
-
I think this is the layout I will go with, I rerendered the fighter as well, just have to go clean up the characters a bit, redo some highlights and shadows.
-
The Iranians started doing that about 10 years ago, I know a guy who used to work on the F-5 program and he calls those things a travesty.

Update of the single fighter version. I pulled it down lower. I want to the skull to remain a background feature not the most prominent part. Also because it was suggested to try reversing the logo I thought I would try that. I think I prefer it the original way. Thoughts? logo reversed
-
So you like the single fighter version then. I could swap the logo around, not sure how that would look though, and why?

Some updates and changes based on suggestions here and elsewhere: Highlighted fighters and retuned character colors: Single fighter V1 Single fighter v2 Thoughts?

There are plenty of ways they could have updated the X-wing. The fuselage changes I am good with the for the most part, though I wish they had raised the cockpit up a bit to give better visibility, that was always my biggest gripe with the original. I am actually ok with the engine redesign, I feel it works better. The issue I have is with the wing split primarily. They could have kept the original splitting method or even gone with a hex wing design (similar to the ARC-170) and it still would have looked ok. It's this mid chord split that really hurts it. It's like Chronocidal said with the JJ-prise, they changed it just for the sake of changing it. The new X-wing almost has JJ-prise nacelle syndrome with the rear wing laser cannons. Compare: With the exception of JJ-prise all Big-Es have their nacelles fitted to their nacelles at or near the center of mass of the nacelle (at least visually). The original had them, slightly further forward, but not so much to make it seem totally out of balance. The JJ-prise has the nacelle attached at the end of the moment arm with a huge amount of mass aft of it, and with a nacelle arm that tapers down as it approaches. All of these are structural nightmares. Now while this one is a fan model, and not 100% accurate) it illustrates the wing issue pretty well: https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8629/15999069785_e025c9302e_z.jpg The upper laser is again attached at the end of the moment arm. Now, that wing having a longer chord might help with the twisting/torsion issue, but not enough. The lower laser, while attached to a short chord wing, is at least attached near the CoM (visually) making it appear more balanced.

Not so much, I realize that SW is space fantasy more than anything else. However, in the original trilogy there was very little that upon looking at it made you think, no way, that couldn't be built, or that couldn't be real, in terms of design. The X-Wing always looked solid, even the wing split had that massive pivot point holding it together. While the new one appears to have that as well, hard to tell from the trailer images, but it appears to share the common pivot, but has panels that close up the gap left in the fuselage. It's the laser cannons and moreso the upper one that ruin the design. The lower one at least appears balanced, attached to the at or near the weapon's CG. The upper one however grips the weapon far too aft for that. This once again shows my beef with movie designers who have never worked outside of a computer. They don't understand any of the physical forces involved in the design of their craft. I think all of us can relate to having old X-wing models with sagging laser barrels. Or how many of us tried to make our own only to see the paper, cardboard, or wooden wings twist because our laser cannons were too heavy past the leading edge? That is what this design invites, any physical model with the wings open will have wing twisting of the rear upper wing, not just because of the laser placement but because of the tiny wing root where it meets the engine. ANd don't go saying, but they build full scale mockups. Yes they did, with the wings closed, let's see those with the wings open and watch the wing twist under load, assuming they don't beef up the wooden mockup with a steel frame to prevent just that.
