Red Dawn Remake---Is nothing sacred???
Dynaman replied to derex3592's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
My point is not even about the invasion of the US itself (in the original). It was that a bunch of kids could take on Russian Spetznaz (at one point) is laughable at best, jingoistic nonsense at worst. The original did have one thing going for it, the Hinds they mocked up looked great, and the RPGs actually had a missile trail (OK, two things) -
Kodai (Wildstar) did storm into Avatar's (Okita's) hospital room, but Okita deflects his anger by saying that he had led men into death and was sorry for it but it was necessary, or something to that effect. It is very nice that Yuki's role has been split into multiple characters (the other women on board), if only for allowing more romantic relationships on the show... The nurse is a good example, shown as a bit of a bimbo, till she needs to do triage and then she takes charge. Next episode is the farewell episode, be interesting to see if Yuki calls anyone. Yamamoto, Yuki thinks that Kodai is interested in her, which is making for an interesting twist.

That is being unfair, the original was also a steaming pile of garbage that made no sense. -
At least they are not tying the results of a multiplayer videogame into the plot (or is that this show too?). THAT is a dumb idea.

There are some copies available on the US ebay now.

I generally hate reboots, but Robocop I'll make an exception for - the sequals hosed it up so completely that a reboot is the only way to go. As for TR, the original was one of the great Arnold movies, but an Arnold movie it was - with everything that implies (great cinema NOT being one of them). I'd happily watch it again and again. This new one, I'll wait for the DVD and rent it most likely.

No idea, it is beyond the price I would normally pay but it is Yamato... Just watched the second disc, just plain excellent. All the changes are for the better (Jupiter doesn't just take them by surprise as they fly by, no snow on Mars, Relfex gun has a reason for being there, the Gamilas troops on Mars are actually fleshed out a bit - at least the commander - and are more then just martinets now, the Yuki/Kodai relationship is a bit different). The redone design of the cosmo tigers is great too, the originals were pretty bland but these new ones have excellent detail.

You may have been joking but I'm not, the movies where much more entertaining then the books. I stopped reading LOTR when I found myself reading an entire paragraph about a knot on a tree, for the third time (you know - you read something so boring you lose track and have to start over). I've never skipped pages like I have with LOTR either, all of the poems were real snoozers. The Hobbit on the other hand, read it from cover to cover and it flowed very well, sure it was a children's book, but it was a very well done one.

> And i based the statement according to Amazon, they have the vol 1 blu ray for $106. But it's stated it only has the first 2 eps. Later disks have 4 episodes rather then 2, so $25 an ep rather then 50. Still a bit steep but not totally out of the park...

Most US Star Blazers fans I've talked with don't really give a rip what it is called, the changes made to the show to create Star Blazers were so minor it did not impact on the story or characters. The biggest problem is getting SB fans to know that 2199 is available in the states - most of them appear to not be anime fans in general.

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time II: The Quickening
Dynaman replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It's a bomb all right... If that is the star of the movie then I agree, but oh what a wretched film to star in. (I'd say I could watch her in anything but that would not quite be true)- 854 replies

NOTHING has licensing issues like Macross has... There is at least the possability of a deal, it will probably depend a lot on how Resurrection does stateside.

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time II: The Quickening
Dynaman replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'll have to revive this thread, tried to watch "Tokyo Gore Police" last night and I ended up shutting it off after 30 minutes or so - the noise was distracting me from the book I was reading. I knew it would be bad, but I had no idea just how bad it could be. The title of one of the extras leads me to believe this is a somewhat popular genre(*) in Japan, is that true? (*) - By genre I mean movies with lots of cheesy mutilation scenes and no plot.- 854 replies

It is a fact, but since the movie is not very far along in production that doesn't make it much more then rumor... http://www.nme.com/filmandtv/news/new-starship-troopers-movie-to-be-less-violent/272555

There is a new ST movie in the works (not the animated one) which is supposed to be truer to the novel. ST is one of the few "remakes" that needs to be done.
-
True - but they PAID for that by having an endless number of episodes with nearly no SFX budget needed. The endless Baltar talking into a microphone episodes come to mind. (where is that funny youtube video of BSG as a video game when I need it...)

Battlestar Galactica Discussion IV with Blood And Chrome
Dynaman replied to 505thAirborne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
As another Jersey boy I have to ditto that. I once (ONCE!) tuned in the show just to see a couple of Jersey locations. I watched about 30 seconds before I got disgusted - not only are the people on the show repulsive specimens of humanity, the scene was just an indoor shot of an apartment.- 698 replies

Where to begin? It wasn't Lor it was B4 (before?). The way they just let an android (found so near Romulan space) jack into all the Federation data was stupid. The Enterprise being chased at the end, and NO ONE thinking it was a bad idea to go into that cloud where they would be out of communication was - stupid. The Dune buggy was - stupid. Data and Picard have a light warship INSIDE the big bad Romulan ship and all they do is get away rather then blow the thing apart from the inside - stupid. There is a bunch more stupid to go around but I can't remember it. Even with all that I liked Picard Junior, he did a decent job with the roll. I also really liked the battle in the cloud, nice SFX work there. A little more work on the script and the movie could have been excellent, everything I mentioned as stupid above could have been handled a little differently and it would have worked just fine.

Ditto on Macross, and I'm hoping they redo the Second Season of Yamato as well, watching the Comet Empire getting chased off Earth by the Yamato still sends a shiver up my spine, seeing it redone to the standards of 2199...

That was also a quote from Richard Hatch - his is about as realistic as someone named MEMO is with a certain other franchise. "Not dead yet" for him means he had a dream about it a week ago.- 698 replies

Sorry guys, you are just getting old - and thus not liking the new stuff because the old stuff is "more believable", even when you know it was not believable. (don't get upset, I freely admit to being an old coot on any number of other threads around here) The new transformer designs are the only things from the new movies that did not bother me. The first Tim Burton Bate Mobile was fine, the second looked like it was patterned off of doilies hanging off a lamp shade. Others like the second bat mobile more - neither was more "realistic" in any way. Same for ED-209, simply a matter of taste either way.

In reality, no humonoid armored vehicle is going to work, including our beloved older ones. A humonoid form is simply too ineffcient for purposes or making it armored, it maximizes the area needing armored while minimizing depth. The new ED-209 may be silly for other reasons, but I think this one is a case of looking at the past with rose tinted spectacles.
