Looks like they might have something here that may leave the mutants and terminators in the dust this summer. Still, I've lived through too many hype machines to let this affect me too much. I'm remaining cautiously skeptical until I see the film myself, especially as a critic of most Trek aside from TOS. Vostok 7 Posted May 1, 2009 Share Posted May 1, 2009 Picked up the big Light 'n' Sound Reboot Enterprise tonight at Wal Mart. I don't have any good AAAs though so I haven't tested the Light 'n' Sound part, but the toy is pretty detailed for what it is (certainly moreso than the older ones from other series). Lots of nice tampo printing, good detail, pretty good. I have to say, the Reboot Enterprise is a pretty interesting design. Not totally my thing (I prefer the early Movie ships, such as the Refit/A Enterprise, the Miranda-class ships, the Excelsior-class ships, etc. etc.), but it's nice. sharky Posted May 1, 2009 Share Posted May 1, 2009 Yeah, these are nothing like the old Micro Machines which were of course gashapon-tastic. The material is a little stiffer/harder than used on the micro machines. Also, the micro machines had no die cast. I don't really feel these Hot Wheels ones were a ripoff at all, it just would have been nice if they used a different material (such as ABS) for the plastic parts, especially since these are marketed towards collectors. The Reliant is about 6 inches long and 3 1/4 inches wide. It's also pretty hefty since the whole main fuselage is diecast. The Refit Enterprise is about 6 3/4 inches long and just a hair over 3 inches wide. So they aren't small, especially not micro machine small. Vostok 7 I saw the Enterprise-D and the Enterprise-A at Target yesterday. They don't look that bad; although, I did see that the Enterprise-A engine nacelles were not really straight. The "D" looked pretty good. Probably becuase it doesn't have any really long slender sections to it as the "A". Is it me, or does the saucer for the Enterprise-A seem too large? I passed as I am really just interested in the Reliant and Bird of Prey. The overall size is decent if you are not going for the larger scale such as the Art Asylum ones. They are something where you could fit the whole set nicely in a display case or perhaps sitting on your desk or bookshelf. I still think they should be in the $9.99 range, but the paint scheme and overall presentation looks good. Sometimes I wonder why they even put diecast in it at all? If it's going to have so little of it, why bother? I suspect they put a little diecast in just to make the claim. Taksraven Let's not forget here that the new movie is a reboot of TOS, where the Klingons played a somewhat minor role to the Romulans (accordingly, the Romulans are from what I understand, the main protagonists of the new movie). Let's not forget that in TOS the Klingons didn't even have a language yet or their classic appearance. None of that came until the first movie. So yeah, it is pretty nerdy (and somewhat misguided) to say it's stupid the new movie won't have any spoken Klingon. And then again, who really cares? Emulate, imitate, and plagiarize. 3. Keep milking it until it's dry So now we have this fresh wave of reboots that is supposedly a good sign that Hollywood is being more creative etc etc, but I strongly disagree. Now rebooting is the thing to milk dry! Take the same story, same characters, change a few things around, and add that beautiful 21st century CG that you couldn't do 10 years ago, and voila... successful reboot. However, in the case of this film, I'd say that it's different enough that it's a bit more than a reboot as it's already been indicated that it's an alternate universe of Trek lore. The way I look at it, as good as this new film could be, it doesn't erase 20 years of crap entertainment. If I enjoy this new Star Trek film (and most indications are it may well be the ONLY enjoyable blockbuster this summer) Paramount will have finally earned some goodwill.
