I suppose, OVA or movie could be done, but we already have DYRL?, and an OVA doesn't stand to capture all of what made Macross great. Keep the story and most of the dialogue the same (I say most, because I'm sure there's some ridiculous line that needs serious clearing up to make sense, and that ought to be explained in its own context, or omitted), I say, but improve the details in the animation to better reflect the action and emotion. Some shots are identical to the original but a lot prettier now. Similarly some lines are the same (Captain Okita's first line for instance ;-) ). The thing they have done right so far is that they arent making the whole thing the same. its a merge of remake and new. Think Macross The First in animated form and you have the basic idea. In fact, I'd say the remake should be an animated version of MTF, period. I think that would please pretty much everyone. Unfortunately, since Mikimoto has said he doesnt know whether the manga will go past episode 27 at this point, a direct anime adaptation could potentially miss those last 9 episodes that really give the original series much of its uniqueness and identity. TV producers are never restrained by where a manga ends, they can easily put "The First" into series form, and blend in some of the later tv elements. Personally, I'd love to see a shiny new 16:9 Macross series with the newer Valkyrie paint schemes, maybe even lead it into the Megaroad launch proper, that'd be an awesome ending. Gubaba Posted March 30, 2012 Share Posted March 30, 2012 Speaking frankly, I guess my big problem with this thread is that everyone who wants a remake is envisioning that remake to look like the "perfect Macross" that they have in their head...which, ultimately, isn't what would be produced. It's the same as RT fans thinking that The Sentinels would be great, "as long as they got rid of the silly stuff, like Care Bears and giant slugs and Bucket-head Breetai and a five-year-fold." 505thAirborne Posted March 30, 2012 Share Posted March 30, 2012 If the studios want to invest in a Macross project, make a new series and leave SDF Macross as is, its a classic in its own right. For many of us who are not big fans of reboots of classic movies (Robocop, Total Recall to name a few) this is the same idea, though the animation is old and dated I like it that way, its both nostalgic and reminds you how far the series has come as well the various anime techniques. Even if they did consider a remake my gut feeling is the story, plot and characters would be quite different, same names and mecha but all revamped... I say leave it as is, a piece of History. Frankly, the idea that SDFM needs to be discarded/overwritten in order to "cleanse" the franchise is..."disrespectful" is too overblown a term, but it's trivializing to the series on some kind of level, that's for sure. To speak for myself, I'm always just playing around when I discuss "what I'd do." I needed something to add to my posts in order to seem like I'm not just complaining without being productive--the real truth is that I am still as much against an SDFM remake as I ever was. Personally, I'd love to see a new version of the original Macross. Not because of HG & robotech, not because the animation is dated, and not for catharsis.
