miriya Posted October 30, 2009 Share Posted October 30, 2009 This morning I decided to wear one of my macross tee shirts (black tee with Hikaru in cockpit and macross logo on front). So I go to the DMV to renew my Drivers license and the guy at the counter first thing he says is, "Awe! That is my favorite anime!". Turns out that he used to rush home from school to watch Robotech when he was a kid, told me about his veritech models and his friend who has an SDF-1. When he took my drivers license photo he said, "I am going to try to get Rick Hunter in the shot too". So that was cool because most people ask me if it is a transformers shirt or a speed racer shirt (WTF?). Next thing I go to whole foods to get some lunch and the (very attractive) young woman working at the coffee bar section says, "cool shirt!". So I said, "Thanks! Do you know what it is?" and she said "of course". Turns out that she has watched both Robotech and Macross and is a huge anime fan. So we talked anime for quite some time while my son was eating pizza. All this stuff just makes me happy. A couple of weeks ago I was at the academy of sciences museum in SF and someone was wearing a macross Kite shirt with UN SPACY on it. I yelled out, "hey! Cool shirt!" and almost everyone in his group turn around thinking that I was talking to them, but he didnt. So I yelled, "UN SPACY! COOL!" He then turned around in almost disbelief. I wonder if I will see any macross costumes tomorrow. In Santa Cruz almost everyone dresses up. Well that is my macross journal entry for the day. In the morning, some old lady thought that the NERV pin I wear on my jacket was a Nazi symbol and started mumbling that I must be a neo nazi. Then, while getting Macdonalds, the lady noticed another pin on my jacket - this one with Haruhi Suzumiya in her Endless 8 bikini sucking on a ice-cone. I got the "he's a pedophile" look. When I was leaving the counter and she got a look at my Nia (from gurren lagann) pin...I got the "yeah -total pedophile" look. Ok...actually...I just made all that up (except I really do have the pins)... That shirt is awesome!" I turned around in shock, and said, oh yes, you watched it? Turns out he spent a lot of time in the 80s in Japan, and new all about Macross and was a fan. Used to get a lot of "Thats cool, where can I get it from?" requests on the street back in the 90's. A guy at Pizza Hut once recognised my NERV shirt and said it was cool. Depending on who is wearing it. For example Megan Fox wearing a Transformers shirt vs Jeff Foxworthy. I don't want to take a chance and wear one outside of a con or something. That's exactly what happens in Japan, from what I see (unless you are in Akihabara, Nipponbashi or Osu Kannon). Wear a Macross shirt and prepare to lose all street cred. VFTF1 Posted October 31, 2009 Share Posted October 31, 2009 Recently, instead of washing my SOS t-shirt after wearing it at an anime convention here for two days straight, I ended up putting it on the passenger seat chair in the front of my car - so people can see it out the window -even at night, I've found the symbol shines forth fairly prominently. Now I just need some Gurren Lagann stickers or something for my side mirrors. I dunno - the older I get, the less I care about what people will think etc etc. Besides, I run a damn anime store, so what am I supposed to do? Wear a suit and tie? And finally - most of my colleagues in Poland drink excessive amounts of vodka. I used to do this too, just because I wanted to show respect for their culture, but ever since being inspired by Agent One, I've stopped drinking liters and liters of vodka on a daily basis and instead worked out. I now weigh in at 110 kilograms, out of which 15 kilograms is muscle - or something - but it sure ain't my gutt, which has vanished - or at least flattened considerably from the sorry state it found itself in when I turned thirty earlier this year. But anyways - now I eat tempura and maguro on a regular basis, wear anime inspired clothes, work out and feel better about life. All of these things are connected. I couldn't bring myself to stop wearing the stuff out of fear of "what would people think" - especially when you consider the various real or imagined vices that people who wear "normal" clothes engage in anyways... But I don't have any Macross clothes - yet. It's just I figure spending all that money on the Yammies and DXs kind of is "enough" for Macross stuff...I need left overs for other pursuits Although I certainly would go for a skull squadron jacket.... Oh yeah - and did ANYBODY end up getting that Alto school shirt? I wanted one when it first came out, but they were a bit on the expensive side and I ended up getting super robots instead... On the outside I must retain an image that is otaku/geek-free . It's more fun being a closet otaku. It's a secret I share only between me and myself. That general style doesn't seem to be quite as readily available as it used to be though. Sometimes I wear one of my various Punisher shirts and occasionally I get comments. Really in America you gotta sport an 80s cartoon like TFormers, HE-MAN, GI Joe, etc shirt unless you're at like a con for someone to really approach you or make a comment. Usually I just wear humorous shirts but I also have a few J-list shirts (chikan chui, Sake-bito, Osake, tobacco wa hatachi ni natte kara, etc). Some of those get some "looks". My Japanese teacher used to get a pretty good kick out of them and to me they're like the western equivalent of engrish shirts which I hope to get some of when I go to Japan.
