DRYL remastered DVD release

This is a regular disc, just use whatever cables are best for your TV. Also, do NOT buy a new TV on a whim. It's a great way to buy too much for a so-so set. Sure, it may look great, but it's really something you should research first.

Previewing the download I've got going, I'm not too impressed. aybe the RAW is just crap, or VLC is unflattering, but it looks over-brightened, and extremely grainy. The torrents on a slow boat to China, so I won't be able to really look until later. In related news, TOMA is an idiot. I fail tp see the point in releasing a film and patting yourself on the back for digging up a classic when the release in not even close in quality to the years old NLA version. H.264 or not, it looks like it was sourced fro a laserdisc rip, what with the softness and color bleeding.

A couple more snaps for the night. Once again, left-side is the original Perfect Edition R2J and the right-side is the new Remastered-Edition R2J.

You guys should be quite alot familiar with these as they are the infamous animation-scenes coloring-goof of the Max-1A turning half-Hikaru during his melee

Ayup! They've finally fixed the coloring-goof in the remastered-version. :lol:B))

Did anyone notice has sold out on Amazon Japan less than a week after being released?

I am glad I pre-ordered mine. ^_^

Actually, package was here in my city, in Virginia on the 22nd amazingly a day after being released in Japan. What sucked was FedEx lied about trying to deliver it on Saturday. I had eyes and ears on the the front of the house continuously and never seen nor heard a peep from the carrier. So after all that, I had to wait until Christmas Eve before I could run through the goods. Sadly, there isn't anything I don't already have as far as line-art from production design sheet collections and books. I was really hope I would get some new line-art, like of that ship escorting the Prometheus from the DYRL game. Alas none..... : (

But it is good to have the newest best possible quality to make screen captures for my site.

Did they fix all the animation mistakes regarding color banding on the valks? When Max is in the Meltrandi ship fighting Milia, did they paint in his blue? Or at the end after Hikaru blasts Bodolza, did they paint in the stripe when the valk flips around in battroid mode? Or what about the most famous-when Focker flies into the scout ship chasing the VT-1? Is the canopy cover yellow (original) or black?

fwiw, Max's 1S was blue-striped even in the original Perfect Edition dvd. Just that the lighting inside the battleship changed when Max went in deeper just before Milia ambushed him.

At any rate, here's the Roy-scene:

I think this is the Hikaru-scene you're talking about:

I never knew about that Max colouring mistake.

Anyway, I got my set a few days ago, just watched it last night, and while I must say I am really glad I got it because all the tiny details are so much clearer that I've made a few more discoveries (and the backgrounds are just breathtaking), I must say there are a few drag-points which make this less than perfect.

First of all: the storyboard does not include the full sequence of the deleted scene in which Max and Millia stage a wedding to trick Bodolza's troops into laying down their arms. A few frames from the storyboard of this sequence and the dialogue for the scene can be found in the DYRL Storyboard book, published in 1984 (more info in the books section on the MW main site). I was looking forward to finally owning the full storyboard for the movie to see how the entire scene was storyboarded... alas.

Now on to the DVDs: As previously mentioned, the visuals are very grainy. That really surprised and depressed me, but a little bit of monitor fiddling makes it tolerable. No 5.1. I have to say, Even though I owned the original R2 DVD release I never saw it the whole way through because of that crappy interlacing. So watching this in Dolby Surround was kind of the first time for me, and I am impressed. There's no need for 5.1 really.

The second DVD is just the monaural version with the ending concert taken out. It is still using the same remastered source. No commentaries, no extras, no nothing.

Disc 3: Not enough stuff. Yes, we haven't seen those skylark commercials, and the Saturn game opening looks cool as ever, but come on. No interviews, no reminiscences, not even an insight onto the remastering process (a side by side comparison a la animeigo woudl've been nice).

And finally, the geek-out thing which annoyed me the most: there is a scene right before Bodolza's ship completely explodes, where there are lots of things inside the ship turning from red to white, etc, you all know the one I mean. Anyway, just before the wide shot of the outside of the ship before it blows up, there is a scene where you see the macross floating near the center of Bodolza's lair, and the white thing is decreasing in size... I dunno how to explain it. Just then there is one frame of film taken from another shot of the same location earlier in the film (when it was still red) for a brief moment -- when I saw this, I went "huh?? I've never noticed that before" and lo and behold, after checking my older R2 release and my VHS version, that frame of film just is not there. What the hell happened?? I'm guessing only people like me who have seen the film a thousand times will give a damn, but hell, that's tampering with the flow of the movie, and at literally the most climactic point in the film.

Phew.

Anyway, two thumbs up, not just because I can now actually tolerate a DVD version of DYRL, but because of the two awesome books and the remastering work which brings out a lot of detail which had been lost till now. The jigsaw puzzle and lack of actually useful extra stuff (other than the books) is a bit lame though.

The "intro movie" for the DYRL MSX console game is just so beyond a joke I don't know whether to laugh, cry or commit murder. B))

Gonna pick up my copy at the post office tomorrow. Damn I wanna watch it when I bring it home but I'm not going to. I'm going to wait until I upgrade to a 1080p front pj instead of the 720p one I currently have. Gonna wait till I upgrade to at least a 200" screen as well. 110" just isn't cutting it anymore :(

PEOPLE! Even though it says "HD remastered" in the DVD title, this is just a STANDARD DEFINITION DVD. It is not in 1080p or 720p High Definition format. There will be no gain in watching it on a 720p or 1080p TV.

It's already out of print (at least according to CD Japan). I was hoping it'd be around for a few months before going OOP. I hadn't bought it yet and I've only ever used CD Japan. This sucks if my only option now is ebay! :(

I've read on Japanese blogs that the shortage isn't really due to high demand, but an error in the set. It looks like almost all online Japanese stores have pulled the DVD set due to a printing error in the Storyboard book. Page 24 has a printing error, according to a post on Bandai Visual's website:

Here is the correct Page 24:

For Japanese residents, you can exchange your copy for a reprinted guide (available around mid-January) by returning your original copy.

This suggests that the Movie Box will be more readily available in January, since most likely a corrected book will be issued.

This is the second printing error for a book that has happened with Bandai Visual that has also limited stock. The first was back in October with the Clamp in Wonderland set, which is readily available now. Fortunately, that set was only due to two pages being mislabeled in the Table of Contents section.

Yeah... I got the raw too to have a look at it - and really it looks awful. Overbrightened, and overly grainy... and there's also black borders aroung the image to boot  The previous version looked much better. I don't if it's because the rip is sucky - but if the actual DVD looks like this it's extremly underwhelming, especially considering how great the remasters of Macross Plus and Macross 7 are :(

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if any of you guys who order from cdjapan have not received their DRYL box yet? Mine was "dispatch" from Jp on 26th, but no additional information added. Suppose to arrive in LA already. Anyone having the same issue like me? Had anyone had problems with EMS?

Thanks!

...What does that mean for us residents in the States? I just got mine from Amazon.co.jp today. I haven't opened it yet either. I don't suppose it really matters since I can't read Japanese...but still it'd be nice if it was correct.

I'm not so sure that the original Bandai R2 subtitles will work for this. It seems like there's ~3 seconds more before the first lines are spoken. I think it might have something to do with the fact that the original DVD was something like 24 frames per second running at 30 FPS. But then again like Kyle Reese "I don't know tech stuff."

Cool, that's good news for people like me who haven't bought it yet, not so good for those who have bought it and live outside of Japan. Hope they'll work something out for the overseas folks who purchased the set, thanks for the info lynn2009!

If I were you, hang onto it. It's rare, so it may well become a collector's item ;) More practically, it's one missing page -- why knock yourself silly over it?

What type of DVD player do you use to watch non US region coded DVD's; Computer DVD-ROM, or Home Theater DVD player.

If you play them on a home theater dvd player what model is it, where did you get it, and how much was it?

i have a region free dvd player, it's been modded to play regions 1-8 and ntsc/pal dvds. it's the jvc xv-n330. stay away from daewoo, that was my first region free modded dvd player and it quit readin' all DISCS (cd's, dvd's). you can unlock some dvd players by enterin' an unlock code (google dvd unlock code, try a site, and look for your dvd player) but the code on the net didn't work on my samsung dvd-m101. my jvc was the same price as a region locked dvd player at wal-mart/bestbuy and alot of ppl had left good reviews on usin' the unlocked version.

my game shark lets my change the region on my ps2 but i haven't tried it recently... i had some u.k. dvd's of some japanese movies and i needed a ntsc/pal converter for it to work (my jvc and daewoo has this built in).

i've never used the firmware/software to unlock my pc's dvd burner 'cause i didn't want to take the chance of it breakin' my dvd burner.
