General Action Figures Thread (1/12, 1/18, 1/24 Scale)
Big s replied to no3Ljm's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I saw this at the bbts site the other day and thought it had a pretty interesting look. The only things I really don’t like is that the rifle looks really out of place and it looks like the knee guards move with the thigh rather than the lower legs. I had to get into a crawl space to relight a water heater the other day and was really wishing I had bought some knee guards, and it the crouching pictures of this figure the knee guards are in a way that probably would end in more knee/shin pain than I had after the work was done -
I haven’t bought a Batman figure in a long time. I might get that Knightfall version, because even though it doesn’t look like the art that’s shown, it does look like a pretty good basic Batman action figure

Thanks. That’s kinda what I figured I have the original ones, but these do look good. I’m not sure if I want to try and get them or not even though that warrior one is pretty tempting with all the extra stuff.

Are these the same as the previous release versions with new finish? The warrior one appears to have a few new accessories, but I have mine boxed up after the move, so I can’t compare these to the original releases

They haven’t shown a prototype yet, so I’m thinking next year.

It depends on the kit. Most are similar to hg kits as far as construction. Some seam lines and such a little bit of cement helps on parts that are loose, but nothing crazy.

I like them. I think the question was asked a page or two back, but they’re pretty good overall. They are a bit different than the Bandai stuff and depending on the kit they sometimes sacrifice articulation for looks. There are more seams than your average hg Bandai kit, so there may be a little more work. I think on the other page I compared them to earlier hguc kits as far as feel. But for me it’s all about the variety of designs that Bandai and many other companies ignore. I’ve been buying there stuff since the first Obsolete kit that came packed with a magazine and whenever I see a kit of franchise that I love, I feel like there’s a good chance they’ll finish a line. The best thing I can say is to find one that interests you and give it a try. The Obsolete ones are fun and tiny. The E.D.209 is big and fun or the Patlabor ones are all pretty great. The Escaflowne kits look amazing, but the articulation gets blocked a little by their own design but look amazing on a shelf.

The 'Hey look at this really cool model build I saw' post
Big s replied to Shawn's topic in Model kits
Sometimes you just gotta have a little fun, even if it’s horrifying. The regult reminds me of one of those odd Robotech sentinels things and the gundam looked more like a possible paint and masking experiment gone overboard. Either that or the gundam was just making fun of the way the standard gundam paint jobs always look a bit like aggressive clowns -
There are more funky ones out there from the animation, but the animation back then was really wonky. If this was from a better company, I would probably judge this a bit a little harsher, but coming from these guys it’s a masterpiece especially in comparison to the unarmored pictures. The only other thing to compare this to is the ancient Arii kit and that was kinda just ok, but good for the time

the face changes drastically depending on the artwork. Like I said above, I do prefer smaller face vents, but you can see what they were looking at

Oddly I’ve seen other pictures from the show where the huge vents are spot on. I do like the smaller ones better though

I’ve had a few odd problems with that tamiya stuff. If you do oils and the smell of turpentine gets to you, there’s always odorless mineral spirits. They still have a bit of a smell, but not as bad

I think it would look better in non metallic, but I have to admit that it looks pretty cool.

I kinda doubt 1/12. Maybe more like 1/20 or 1/35. I haven’t seen enough pictures of it to judge and I don’t remember a scale on it

I was kinda curious about this as well. I’ve only had that problem with tamiya panel liners. I wasn’t sure if it could also have been an acrylic wash. I’ve always had bad luck with those as well, like if the was dries to quick leaving smudges that don’t wanna wipe away. Personally I haven’t had big problems with oil washes and been curious about the clay washes. I’ve never seen flory or found it in stock at web stores. Just something I’m thinking about trying since they clean up with water.
-
Hope you can get things fixed up and don’t give up. Sometimes it’s good to make sure you have a decent gloss before panel lining and sometimes the panel lining products can be where the problems are.

I wouldn’t doubt they could do a better job. I’d be interested

As much as I liked the Arii kits back in the day, they really need an update. I don’t really have much hope for more modern toys or kits beyond this new action figure and like I said above, I’m holding back. As far as modern American Macross though there are designs upcoming for Zentraedi soldiers and mecha. And that honestly is surprising to me that they are going that far even though I feel like other companies do it better. But there are items that these companies are touching that the others don’t. As far as Southern Cross Arii really only did a small handful of kits and no one else is doing anything modern. With this new figure it’s gonna depend on how the armor turns out. I couldn’t care less about her dress uniform. If it’s not a pile of junk and ends up looking cool I’ll buy it, and then I’ll worry about other armored characters

That’s pretty much every princess in every video game franchise. They either have bad directional sense or are very prone to capture, because they forget to pay their guards or something

I don’t know if it’s even a spoiler anymore with every YouTube and news article posting it directly on the thumbnail

That’s an awesome display

Unfortunately there’s no alternative for southern cross fans. If any of the major Japanese companies did an action figure of her in her armor, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. The Japanese companies don’t want to touch Southern Cross mainly due to it being a failure. On top of that I wonder if there’s also licensing issues on top of that. There are a lot of cool classic 80’s anime getting new products, but I and probably most of the few fans of Southern Cross have little hope for any products like action figures or model kits. Personally I don’t like the direction they’re taking on this figure and disappointed with the company overall and unless I see really good pics and a decent review of the figure, I’ll skip it
