Dynaman Posted October 16 Posted October 16 The predator looks bad. I wonder if it was some kind of money saving problem. From what little I remember this has more screen time for the predator and from the look of it that facial mask might be easier to work with than earlier ones. It looks like the mechanical bits could be worn from more angles while filming. Quote

Was just doing a silly rewatch of the first couple Predator films and oddly they seem to understand more than I remember. Mostly in the second film where one definitely understands cuss words are tied to horrible things happening and the chief actually seems to know a bit more by telling Danny Glover’s character to take the pistol. Can’t really say that they know enough to order a burger, but by the second movie it does seem like there’s a bit of an attempt to learn English, although hunting is definitely the main priority and like most people on earth, the first thing they really start to learn are the bad words Quote
Thom Posted November 2 Posted November 2 (edited) Even in the first one, the Predator was learning how to speak. Admittedly, a lot of mimicry, but that's how it starts, and by the end it was using it's copy/paste vocabulary appropriately. Edited November 2 by Thom Quote

Yeah, I didn’t realize until the rewatch that they were picking up English, even though in the first it was mainly hunting Spanish speakers. The chief in the second kinda surprised me there and I guess in a few more decades, maybe they could learn to have a basic conversation Quote

Most animals make a variety of noises for communication and with contextual clues a Human can easily tell the calls of a distressed animal from an aggressive one from a hungry one and so on. We make fishing lures that are designed to imitate the movements and sounds of injured prey, we make duck calls designed to imitate the sounds of the mating calls and feeding calls of various duck species. If Humans can figure that out for tons of different animal species on our own planet, a spacefaring species like the Preds can definitely figure out the context behind the sounds we make without needing to actually understand the language and imitate them the same way we do. The chief in the second movie actually understood the phrase he was using. It didn’t mean he totally understands English, but he seems to understand the phrase and how it’s used when he hands over the pistol. I kinda doubt he learned that in distress. It shows they probably picked up a bit of the language and may understand more than what’s even shown in the movies. So it seems that they may actually care a little about what humans are saying beyond the words used when humans are in trouble or just as a lure Quote
Dynaman Posted November 2 Posted November 2 The predator species is far more technologically advanced than humanity and clearly consider us nothing more than dangerous game. The ones who have to prove themselves would be the humans - and learn the predator language. The predators probably have computers translate everything for them just like we are very close to having now. Quote
TangledThorns Posted November 4 Posted November 4 IGN gave it a 8 which is a solid review. I'll probably go see it next weekend. https://www.ign.com/articles/predator-badlands-review Quote
Hikuro Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Scores have been rather favorable for the franchise of its type and the staleness it’s had. I was planning to go Friday after work but I had to shut my bank card off and wait on a replacement after someone used it to buy McDonald’s close to my place….yeeeeep and McDonald’s won’t help the cops which makes me think inside job when it happened at 1:40AM. It’s gotten to the point where they already have a tap pay scams becoming common as well. It’s getting to the point where cash is becoming a safer option, as long as you don’t just get old school mugged. Gas stations and bank ATMs have even had people place thin fake devices over the actual ones to swipe or tap cards that look legit. The scams are advancing and evolving just as fast and elaborately as ways to get around them. Quote

Hikuro Posted November 6 Posted November 6 Usually I do online purchases of via mobile apps, but there's times I can't. Worse part is Mcdonalds is like Oh well, nothing we can do about it. Cops are telling them differently right now. Luckily, I'm gonna go with some people on saturday morning and got tickets for 3D. Quote

Hopefully everything with your card gets resolved and hoping the ones responsible get caught. I’m sure you’ll get everything refunded by the bank though Quote
rsvictor1976 Posted November 7 Posted November 7 I just saw the movie and thought it was good. It kind of reminded me of the 80s fantasy adventure films like the Conan films, Krull, and Red Sonja. Quote

I can use a virtual card but not for bills. It’ll cut things pretty close but it’s okay! There’s been a substantial increase in card fraud in town, cops are thinking there’s an operation going on due to number of reports. They’ve been looking for two particular individuals who’ve been favoring the local Target. 11 hours ago, rsvictor1976 said: I just saw the movie and thought it was good. Hikuro Posted Saturday at 07:43 PM Posted Saturday at 07:43 PM Alright I just got home from it, it was a good movie, not mindblowing, not amazing, but was good. Spoiler Dek is certainly a different take on what we usually get and that alone can be seen as a welcome change. He's prideful, if not a bit naive. Considered the runt of his clan and hated by his father but respected by his older brother....his mother on the other hand who knows as that ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Dek sets out to get a monster known as Kalisk who's feared by many of Dek's kind and for good reasons, it can heal itself from nearly any injury rather quickly. Elle Fanning playing dual roles as Thia and Tessa, synthetics set out to hunt down and secure the Kalisk for it's regenerative abilities for the corporation. She's both whimsical and full of character while playing Tessa, then evil and goal minded for Thia. Then there's......Bud, a mysterious creature who marks itself on Dek and Tessa as a member of her family. I don't know, I see the point of the character but at the same time whenever this character appears I sort of feel like she drags the mood of the film down a bit. Namely as it gets towards the ending of the film before Dek's final fight against his father. The music was very good, the visuals are fine as can be, and we get something different for the franchise that certainly doesn't make it feel stale at all like previous iterations. It's placement in the scope of the franchise is a bit tough for me. But I'd probably agree with some and go with this order, Predator, Prey, Badlands, 2, AVP, Predators, The Predator, AVPR. Quote

kajnrig Posted Monday at 02:43 PM Posted Monday at 02:43 PM Mild spoilers, but also very funny: Quote
Tking22 Posted Monday at 03:49 PM Posted Monday at 03:49 PM I saw it in IMAX Saturday night and I really enjoyed it overall. Works better as a generic sci-fi action movie with an alien as the focus, rather weak Predator movie IMO, but it was enjoyable overall, action packed, violent, not bad. Not really the direction I'd like to see the franchise go overall, but clearly Disney is looking to hit on multiple fronts, some R rated stuff, some PG-13, some live action, some animated, I'm okay with all of it as long as it doesn't drop to the quality of The Predator or anything like that again. Quote
Thom Posted Tuesday at 09:54 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:54 PM Enjoyed it! Didn't knock my socks off, but I was entertained pretty consistently. Quote
kajnrig Posted Wednesday at 12:11 AM Posted Wednesday at 12:11 AM I'll say this, the whole warrior culture thing seems waaay off base. This is a hunting culture, not a warrior one. Or at least that's what it was built up as, to me. The one thing I've always felt that the comics/expanded lore/etc. gets wrong is not adhering to that distinction. Like, I'd like to see more survivalist or conservationist philosophizing girding the backbone of the civilization, not... bushido. As it is, absolutely none of the story and character beats are at all surprising or interesting, just executed competently enough as to be entertaining. This same movie, starring a Les Stroud-/Steven Rinella-(/Jeremiah Johnson-, for the more grizzled among you )type predator, would have been very interesting. But I can't deny I had a good time nonetheless. Quote
Thom Posted Wednesday at 02:56 PM Posted Wednesday at 02:56 PM (edited) Someone did make all their tools and weapons and ships. so they can't be all hunter/warriors. I was wondering if that was why Dek looked different from other Predators, in that he started from another caste? Didn't address it though, but if they do another with these characters, 'Id hope to see some of those answers. When Thia... Spoiler ...went onto the ship, did anyone else notice the ID4 alien head on the wall..? Edited Wednesday at 03:03 PM by Thom Quote
