Thoughts on Flashback 2012

Flashback 'Em All

When a movie or TV show has a sequel that’s separated from it by a number of years, you still like to think that not much is going to change. Take Ghostbusters for example. The first movie came out in 1984 but Ghostbusters II didn’t come out until 1989.

Where Macross is concerned however, there really is no true sequel to the original series. The 1984 movie Do You Remember Love? was a cinematic retelling of the series and Macross II was set eighty years later. When Mac2 was retconned, the next production in chronological order was Macross Plus, which is still set 30 years later. Now, that all doesn’t mean there isn’t actually a sequel of sorts to First Macross, it’s just not quite what you think it would be. Released in 1987, Macross: Flashback 2012 is a 30 minute music video that is largely made up of clips taken from First Macross and DYRL, hence the title Flashback. There is a story there but it is very short. This is primarily due to the fact that most of the new footage that was used in Flashback was intended to be the final scenes of DYRL but weren’t ready in time for the movie’s release date.

Disregarding all the flashback footage, the story is thus: It is September 2012, nine months after the end of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross and Quamzin’s failed attack on New Macross City. The city has expanded and the SDF-1 has nearly been repaired, looking much like it does in DYRL. Lynn Minmay has arrived in Macross City to perform the final show of her Sayonara World Tour. The OVA then goes into all the flashback materiel before switching back to the ‘present.’ Minmay walks around the deserted concert hall where she gave her last show. We see Hikaru Ichijyo, one of the heroes of the last series, test flying the new VF-4 Lightning III variable fighter. He’s now married to Misa, who is about to take command of humanity’s first super long range colonization ship, the SDF-2 Megaroad-01. Minmay recalls the days of her youth, about how she wanted to be a singer and left her home in Yokohama to go live with her aunt and uncle in Macross City because her parents were not in favor of it. She remembers arriving in the city and seeing a poster about the SDF-1 Macross, which shifts to a scene of her in New Macross City looking at a poster for the Megaroad.

The Megaroad-01 is launched and thousands cheer her on as she soars up into the sky. Minmay waves to the people below from one of the observation decks as Misa directs her crew from the ship’s bridge, stealing glances outside at Hikaru in his Lightning III. The ship reaches orbit and joins with an escort fleet of Zentradi warships and sails off into a bright new future with our hero and heroines.

At least that’s what you would like to think. The one thing I don’t like about Flashback is that it doesn’t reveal the characters’ ultimate fates, which in this case is pretty important. The video also focuses pretty exclusively on Hikaru, Misa and Minmay (except for the flashback clips), but we do know some of what happened. A year later Hikaru and Misa have their first child, a little girl named Miku Ichijyo. We know that Max and Milia have eight children (seven natural, one adopted), all girls, and are seen again in the 49 episode series Macross 7 with their youngest daughter Mylene, but that’s about it. We don’t really know what happens to Claudia or Admiral Global or the bridge bunnies, although I suppose it’s not terribly important. Ah, I almost forgot Breetai and Exedol. The Zentradi tactician Exedol goes with Max and Milia to the Macross 7 fleet and I believe Breetai becomes UN Spacy Commander-in-Chief at some point. What I’m saying is, that it would have been nice to have had the whole cast get a send off.

There is one other thing that bugs me a little bit about this particular snippet of Macross lore. You see in Flashback we get Hikaru, Misa and Minmay riding off into the space sunset, but what you find out if you look it up is that the Megaroad-01 disappears without a trace near the galactic core in 2016. I’m a bit annoyed about that if only for the implication that Hikaru, Misa, their daughter Miku and Minmay all die a cold, lonely death in the forsaken depths of deep space. Me, I like my characters to have a happy ending, like the end of Return of the Jedi.

All in all, Even though Flashback really is just a long music video set to a bunch of Minmay songs (although I’m not sure why they didn’t include My Boyfriend is a Pilot), it’s worth watching for that new footage and as a chance to see these particular Macross characters one last time. Besides, maybe it’s not all bad as that. Maybe the Megaroad-01 is next to the second star to the right and straight on ‘till morning.

There really doesn't need to be more continuation of the story of the three main characters.

The ending of SDFM is the ending.

-Misa found love. Just like the zentradi soldiers. She isn't such a bitch anymore like when Hikaru first met her. Her journey has ended.

-Minmay has matured from a whiny girl with ambition into a star who also knows the importance of duty so she can see why hkaru fights. At first hikaru was just a normal guy wanting to chase pussy like his older bro Roy so he would not be "left behind", and now he has all the responsibility put in his shoulders after Roy's death and doesn't have a guide anymore. His original motiviation was to impress his GF so she wouldn't think he was a coward who contributes nothing, but then it changed and now he is doing it to protect others not just impress his GF.

-Hikaru used to be a guy who didn't respect soldiers to a guy who is now a dog of the military killing the "end of game boss" which is a giant brain in a jar that is the leader of the evil zentradi. The "Messiah: in the minmay song. The hero (the space knight in shining armour) did not just rescue the princess and live happily ever after with her though despite saving her with his valkyrie in GERWALK mode.. The princess had more imnportant duties to serve: her fanbase. While the hero fell in love with the woman he hates from the beginning of the show which I suppose was "the twist" you were not suposed to expect.

That's it. you don't really need flashback to tell us what happened afterwards imo. It's just a bonus for those who want to see images of happy people celebrating victory and moving out into space.

Global mentions at the end of the tv series that the only way to ensure the survival of the human race and secure the future is to spread ourselves to other planets in case another laser attack happens again that makes the humans extinct like the protoculture of the zentradi legends. There are still rogues out there so it might be safer to spread out. Same message at the end of DYRL "...but there are still rogue zentradi stil out there.." right after beating the alien leader.

The zentradi have been wiping out planets like that for ages. Humans are just one on a list of species that could have gone extinct.

To me the story finished right there when global give misa more responsibility (making her have a new ship to keep humans alive in other places) and human spread their seed around. That doesn't mean we have to see it literally happen. But the message is humans should not go down the same path as the PC who obviously lost their great civilisation thanks to the very things they created which destroyed them. (ie much like the story of atlantis where the atlantenas were punished by god)

The alien ship which crashed to earth might have been a gift that gave the world the abilty to stop fighting its own global wars, but it also was a ill omen that now they would have to die to aliens. So in many ways regardless of the ship humans were already being in danger of destroying themselves like the zentradi,. Zentradi are not unique in their warlike natures. When misa tries to explain to her dad that the zentradi are way too powerful he doesn't believe her. (possibly because he suspects the aliens might have brainwashed them while they were captured.)

But it's this need to dominate the other race that created the "global punishment from god" of having those lasers being shot down to earth and almost wiping humans out completely. I guess the TV series wraps everything up nicely.

-You killed the big bad boss who has mind control over the aliens..

-three main characters have ended their journey and they have changed from the start of the story

-earth is rebuilt while humans spread their culture to other parts in the universe to avoid the fate of the PC who no longer live. Humans have grown from the terrible experience and paid the price of the first space war: The blood of all the innocent who died fighting aliens or just living on earth (poor little destroids lol) who were not lucky enough to be on the sdf1 during the conflict. The "punishment from god" taught them a lesson so now they will act/behave different from before; when they were in global conflict amongst themselves; pre-crashed alien spaceship hoping to conquer the other side instead of tolerating the differences and just living in peaceful co-existence.

I suppose for story reasons you could put the blame entirely on the evil "anti-un" who are supposed to be the bad guys but they could just as well be seen as good guys fighting the draconian control of a corrupt global government. Would be interesting to see the war from their point of view much like gundam tries to do with zeon so it doesn't feel too biased. Maybe paint the UNG as like the "Titans" in gundam.

Having said all the above, it's not that I would not like to know what happened to Misa Minmay and Hikaru. I just think taken alone SDFM was all we needed. It's like trying to make a story about what happened to the old man in the Monster MK II. Who cares. lol Maybe he got sick of fighting and used the rest of is life to doing non-violent tasks working with construction robots and alien giants to help rebuild buildings after the space war. Details about that doesn't seem all that important. You can imagine at the end of SDFM Misa and Hikaru getting married having kids without needing to see it happen onscreen.

The story of what happens to Misa, Minmay, Hikaru, and the Megaroad 1, is pretty open-ended. For all we know, they could've found a habitable planet that they live on, but are unable to communicate outside of it. Who knows, there's just too many things that could've happened to them. Some people find this type of storytelling weak, but in honesty, I don't always need to know everything that happened to every character. It invites the viewers to create their own side story, and supplement their enjoyment of the story. It also lets us (i.e. sites like this), discuss, debate, and talk about possibilities.

To me the story of Hikaru, Misa and Minmay ended with the series which was retold in DYRL. I don't really need to follow a character to their death especially fictional ones. You make stories out of the most important part of the protagonist's life... in this case protagonists. Flashback is a great piece of animation but it's just used to expand and relive the moments in the Space War 1 and a chance to say farewell to the 3 main characters. Sure we see Max and Miriya in Macross 7, but they're still just important side characters. Macross 7 is Basara, Mylene and Gamlin's story.

I could have done without knowing what happened to Indiana Jones after the last crusade or John Mclane after Die Hard 3. Actually, I could have done with just the first movies for both of those.

But the "riding off into space sunset" IS the happy ending. People kept yammering on and on "what happened to them AFTER ALL THIS??" until eventually Kawamori couldn't take it anymore and said "OK, you know what. There. That's what happened. Happy now?" :p

This is something about story telling which people in this day and age don't seem to understand. You don't have to follow them till death or what not. You can just end the story. Yes, it is possible to just say, "THE END" without knowing "What happens after that?".

But the "riding off into space sunset" IS the happy ending. People kept yammering on and on "what happened to them AFTER ALL THIS??" until eventually Kawamori couldn't take it anymore and said "OK, you know what. There. That's what happened. Happy now?" :p

Flashback 2012 to me is the last and final Good bye to our dear friends, a new journey, a new adventure and the great unknown (I'll admit it even makes me a bit sad to watch....there I said it). The new animation & music mixed with the old worked well for me and I enjoyed it.

I might be the minority here, but if they ever want to make a Macross series/OVA based on Megaroad 01 with VF-4's kicking ass & taking names, I'm in!! B))

If they can tell a new story with the same characters in an interesting way, then yes, I'd be interested as well. But to just have a small story of what happens at the end of SDFM, it's just unnecessary. I prefer the idea of integrating new mecha, new characters, into new situations, while keeping just a few degrees of separation. It keeps the story from getting stale.

Seeings how successful Macross Frontier was, I feel they could come up with an original story that would involve part of the original cast as well new members, Megaroad 01, VF-4s and all new Mecha designs.

And just to add some gas on the fire lets see who the Supervision Army really are or just a whole new enemy... the producers/writers choice.

I also don't get how anyone could say Hikaru, Misa and Minmay got any less of a send-off than any other characters. "Britai became commander of the UN Spacey" is less send-off than "Hikaru and Misa got married then, along with Minmay, went off on humanity's first interstellar colonization mission! (Misa was captain!)" Britai, Kim, Global, etcetera get much less than that, yet people don't seem to be satisfied unless they learn everything that happened to the big three right up to the grave. In detail.

Max and Milia got further adventures, but you still don't know any more of their "ultimate fate" than you do Hikaru, Minmay and Misa!

Personally, I'm satisfied that we know all the important bits. We don't need to know about their transition into adult diapers and nursing homes.

Kawamori is gonna get angry again with all this Yamato VF-4 and FB2012 thing and fans starting to harras him again about Hikaru, Misa and Minmei'a fate that he's probably gonna say they died a horrible horrible death to shut everyone up one more time. hahaha.

Ok, in all seriousness, if I remember correctly, after FB2012 Kawamori wanted to move to other thing but people kept pestering him about them so he just said that Megaroad-01 lost communications near the center of the galaxy and period. Added that Hikaru's voice actor, a close friend of Kawamori commited suicide and Kawamori doesn't want anyone else to voice Hikaru.

I agree too, FB2012 is the perfect sendoff and finale for the original love triangle.

Also, aside from Basara, another reason I hate Macross 7 is how they butchered Max and Millia relationship.

I thought he died in a motorcycle accident.
