MUAHAHAAH! ahem... but seriously - I voted something else; and I'd be surprised if people actually voted that they watch MF for one of the more concrete reasons in the poll... Actually - I don't know if the poll is really very sensible - because it seems to presume that the mecha or the CGI or the girls can exist as sufficient reason in and of itself... but I get the feeling that all of the elements blended together in the way that they are - aka the entire "aura" and "sense" of Macross are the real reason... But still, even if very "selctive", I still watch some anime that fit my tastes (e.g.: Ghost in the Shell: SAC), Macross still being one of them. I see what you guys mean. I think most people will choose all of the above but I was just curious to see if there were specific reasons people watched it. Mr March Posted May 9, 2008 Share Posted May 9, 2008 Ultimately, story. I love characters and mecha and all that, but ultimately if the story is no good, I just won't revisit the show. SDF Macross has aged poorly, the music is dated, the animation is weak, the dialogue can be chessy, but the story keeps bringing me back every time. If I analyze the shows I've watched in the past and ask why I'll never watch them again, it's always because the story was weak. Whereas an anime with weak mecha but an excellent story will always hold my attention (Zambot 3, I'm a-lookin' at YOU!) Realist_Classic Posted May 10, 2008 Share Posted May 10, 2008 Argh, voted too quickly, and didn't see the 'All of the Above' option and instead voted for characters. To be honest, I'm less emotionally bound to the franchise to begin, although having watched just about every series (with the exception of Macross 7). I really wasn't in a hurry to watch the first episode of Frontier when it came out late last year. Come to think of it, I was initially put off by the promotional previews because the imagery of Frontier seemed so---gaudy. So I almost dismissed the series entirely, thinking that it was going to be a show with an average story with lots of eye candy. I'm so glad that I was wrong. Six weeks in and I'm still looking forward to Thursday/Friday when the first raws come out. There's just something about the story, the characters, and the music (probably because I'm a big sucker for Yoko Kanno's work). The mecha is secondary for me, but so far, I liked the designs and the action sequences involving them have been well choreographed. The best aspect of Frontier turned out to be the futuristic world itself. So many little trivial, but interesting things ranging from the interactive cafe tables, the cellphones and other doodads. Eye candy to some extent, but it also reflects some detailed creative thinking to come up with those concepts, which I appreciate. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I mean, there is so much rubbish on television at any one time these days its such a relief to see programs that are different and are also GOOD SF. Its like I observed in an earlier post, 2008 is a great year so far 'cause you have new Macross, Dr Who AND BSG being shown at the same time. Great stuff... But...where did you hear this? I read a rumor somewhere that Kawamori said it would tie everything up, but I haven't come across a reference for it. I have bad memories of many people here railing on Macross Zero for not tying into the original series at the end, when Kawamori had never said that it would. Likewise, I'd be pretty annoyed to see people bitching that Frontier didn't solve the Megaroad-01 mystery, unless Kawamori specifically stated that it would. It would be nice to know what the fate of Hikaru, Misa, Minmay and crew is, but if not, it doesn't affect me. Kawamori has been pulling a Tomino all these years with the exception of killing off the majority of the cast, and it hasn't brought the stories down. The possible ties I see forming are possibly finding out the fate of Kudo Shin, Megaroad-01 and crew, and Genzoh Dyson. I watch Frontier because its Macross. I've enjoyed it a lot thus far. I was worried that it would only be good as a Macross anime, as opposed to being a good anime on its own aside its lineage. I was worried over nothing, its a great series so far. The main character is likeable and relatable, as many homages are there are, none seem verbatim(for example though Michel is seen as this series' version of Max, he is not exactly the same, he is very different in some ways), the music is GREAT, and the CG is good. The plot hasn't been too predictable or cliche, and one doesn't need to watch the past Macross series to know what this one is about. Though, I must say, its a damn shame if someone hasn't watched the originals before. There are so many homages in Frontier that one wouldn't notice if they hadn't watched the previous series. Its a wealth of history and background. Though good on its own, I think it satisfies Macross fans more than new fans, simply because they would be the only ones who get the homages. In a way, its like Otaku no Video; if you weren't a fan of old anime or knowledgeable about it, its just not as entertaining and you wouldn't get some of the inside jokes/plot. In conclusion, my initial draw to this series was that its the newest addition to Macross. What kept me watching is the story, and great characters. Story and characters being likable or interesting can always be iffy I feel when it comes to Macross however you can always count on the mecha action. I've never been let down in that area. So far story wise the only thing pulling me in is Alto, Ranka, and Vajra. I don't like Sheryl to be honest and the less of her I see the better. I get the same feeling from Sheryl I got from Myung (Macross Plus). True they aren't the same type of character but the dislike is till there. First impressions go a long way and both left extremely bad ones on me. I didn't get over Myungs and I seems (though I hope that isn't the case) I might not get over Sheryl's. I just finished watching episode 5 and that didn't help as much as I hoped it would. None of the other SMS characters are that interesting save Ozma and don't really see enough of him and there is no NUNS to even like or dislike . Sure there is Catherine but she doesn't even register as being important at the moment. You could replace he with a nameless character(s) and her role would be filled save for that creepy kissing scene. I don't think i can pick one aspect to the exclusion of the others. sigh, if only the poll could be designed in such a way that we could rank the reasons... anyway, i voted "because it's macross". I'm quite slow on anime these days, and no matter how good the story, characters and overall quality of the anime, i am usually content on waiting for the entire series to finish so i can buy the complete dvd and watch the whole thing in one marathon. or at the very least, id wait for a batch of 10 episodes before starting.
