Watching anime is immature?

No harm in watching hentai either, provided you are of legal age and fully understand exactly what it is you are watching.   :)

I never seen Hentai because of an overwhelming fear of the clerk looking at me like I'm some sort of freak that gets his jollies of watchig anime babes getting raped or just plain having sex. There were times I was tempted to by this one hentai, but decided against it. this was a fact that if I did, my nephew who was once living with me at the time would go into my room and watch my video's with out my permission and I get yelled at by my sister for owning it.

Nothing to be ashamed of for liking hentai: The storylines in these are actually much more involving than proper porn. More interesting settings too. It's a good example of how an animated show can have advantages. Black Bible is a good example. And for people who think you are wierd for watching it, need to watch it before judging. They are the ones with the *issues.

*Just make sure you keep this sick fetish of yours a secret you perverted freak! jk

Well I can't honestly say I have ever seen a Hentai title. The closest I came to that was a screening of Kite, and that went along the lines of plot, plot, plot, PRON, plot, plot. And in the end I was left thinking WTF!?! and then I really started researching titles that people recommended before I watched them :). Seriously though who cares what people think, they'll get over it.

I usually try to inform them about the Japanese culture and then move on to say that they're ignorant and immature themselves and if that doesn't get through, I tella them to facough. :D

As for Hentai, it's really interesting but I don't watch it because it's too freakish in some parts like multi-tentacled monsters raping girls. Black Bible freaked the poo out of me.

Junior high school was a crapfest of everyone jumping on my back for liking anime. Until Sailor Moon came out. Then whenever someone bothered me, all I had to say was "you watch sailor moon girly-boy" (and I used to get all sorts of flak for having long hair), so that shut everyone up.

In high school, I was the anime guru for the gaming club and everyone who got pulled into anime would come to me asking for good titles since they already knew I had been watching anime for years. Hell, I helped introduce Rurouni Kenshin to my high school a long time before it got licensed. Anyone who gave us crap, I had them thrown out of the room (I was in charge of the "bouncers", meaning I was the head of a group of guys that would throw out trouble makers.).

During college and university I hung out with friends that liked anime, or flung monkey-poo back at anyone that tossed it my way. :) When you point out stuff about Kimba the White Lion and the Lion King, and Disney's stance, you get a whole bunch of hurt denials, when you're being confronted by a hypocrite that loves Disney.

Heh greatest moment I wasn't actually involved in was when a big trouble maker came into the gaming club. He knocked over a large trashcan full of trash, insulted everyone, started calling us all fags for watching anime and started shoving people trying to start a fight. One of the bouncers got fed up with him and tossed his backpack down a flight of stairs. The guy rushes out, comes back and starts getting in everyone's face. The same bouncer gets pissed when he gets shoved, grabs the guys backpack again and throws it over the railing to let it fall in a trashcan on ground level. Then after finishing that with the guy hitting him the entire time, he grabs the guy and throws him down the stairs (not all the way down, the guy just rolled to a platform a few feet away since it was a semi-winding flight of stairs).

It wasn't the smartest thing to do since it could have gotten the gaming club shut down, and he could have really hurt the jerk. Even though everyone felt it was justified, I had to kick the guy out of the club and his position as bouncer. It felt good seeing that jerk roll down the stairs, because he was always causing trouble. He was fine by the way, just some scrapes, and a really really bruised ego.

After that incident though, the trouble makers that would bother us about anime stayed clear. :)

Just about anything mainstreem here in the U.S. sucks.

It still trips me out that people think all anime is for kids given the level of violence in some of them. Yeah I'd like to see what some of these people would say if they sat down and watched Kenshin butcher everyone in Samurai X. Or Alucard running around with his two oversized M-1911s blowing people apart.

I think part of the problem is when people here think anime they of lame crap like Pokemon, that is specificaly for kids.

Anyone ever watch hentai while stoned? Now that's a trip...

:D 33 does that work for you bromgrev ? :D As for anime, I don't really care what other people think. I've gotten used to be mockep about my hobbies, be it modelbuilding, anime or Macross. I just simply smile at them and walk away. Mainstream just isn't really my thing

There are five categories:

-those who see that violence and think it is immature for that reason (the older generation who looks down on this. They believe all anime is aimed specificially for teenagers because of the excessive violence, sex etc and see these as promotion and glorification of these acts to attract young adolescents and teens. Like the pulp fiction from past times that they may have been into in thier younger days)

-like the first category but who believe animation = cartoons, therefore cartoons can't have serious adult themes (this one is being phased out - during the time when anime was not mainstream enough, it would have been hard to convince these people to watch animated shows with any seriousness)

-those who see kiddie anime shows aimed for children and think all anime is like that (whos exposure to anime is limited to those shows aimed at kids specifically)

-elites who may have been into it when younger but are ashamed to like it in adult life and think it was a phase they should have gone through. Maybe they believe they should have outgrown it? Closet fans :D Like in the gaming community these ones think they are cool for having the esoteric knowledge of something but would never dare hang with the more extreme nerds in real life. They move on, believing it is more mature to show restraint for your love of the medium and not let it become a religion. It is important to distance yourself from the fanboys who are embarassing than to risk being associated with nerds. Some of the people in this group might have been influenced by behaviour from the first category.

-like the above, in terms of being elite, but who wear the geekiness with a badge of honor because the esoteric knowledge is needed by friends who are only into it casually, and amoungst thier friends see themselves as some kind of wise sage valued in thier community. It is actually cool to label yourself a nerd for knowing this and that fact, a nerd for understanding the technology in great depth, a nerd for having rare stuff like toys that nobody else can acquire because they don't have the right connections or channels etc. These ones can have a life and also be a nerd and not care what others think. (because they have the luxury of being around people who think it is neither cool or nerdy to like anime)

The category I was reffering to in my post is mainly the first category and second category. No matter how good a story is, or how mature something is, they will label something "for kids" or aimed to teens and look down on something without experiencing it enough. Just like the critics of gaming who view games being only about violence, only kids entertainment etc.. or who don't believe you can have a comic book that has a good story or interesting character depth, so the literature or medium will always be inferiour to other forms of entertainment, when it is not necessarily true all the time. There is good examples and bad examples - examples like akira and gits are equally adult as much as they can be for kids and teens. The violence or sex might be gratuitous, but it also adds realism and believability. These ones shouldn't pass judgement on anime itself, for poor writing, or using only the bad examples to suit thier argument or biased views about something because they don't want to bother to look in depth.

Even with something as mainstream as ninja scroll which has a lot of the violence and sex that isn't necessary to the story, but which I would recommend to anyone because it is good, they will hold to thier views because either animation and/or a fantasy setting just aren't thier thing. But they will then go and watch crouching tiger hidden dragon, or kill bill showing a bias.

I've seen worse, but yeah show anyone who'll fling crap at ya some hentai and that will shut 'em up REAL good! Oddly enough I've yet to encounter anyone giving me flak about watching anime. Plus I talked about anime to some people who've never seen it tell me "hmm mabye I should check it out." Just lucky I guess. *shrugs*

The funny thing is, I've run into people who say anime is lame, but on the other hand they'll see some of my sketches (mostly mechs with a strong Gundam influence) and say "Whoa, did you draw that, that's pretty bad!"

I sure like to see them if you don't mind. :)

whooooohooo, the anime mafia. That will teach them. Did you do any kung fu moves on the shmo by any chance. And please keep a video camero handy for future events like this, so we can watch.

I dont give a crap what people say about anima fans. What the hell makes anything more mature anyway. As long as you take care of your adult buisness in a proper manner, then you can do what you want. Why is it always some fat ass that tells me that anime is for kids, but what makes getting drunk every monday night and watching football more mature. Not a damn thing if you ask me. Its always some dumbass with a sorry ass job making comments like that. Those SOBs can just go back to work digging ditches, fixing pipes, or mowing lawns, what ever the hell these retards do for a living. (Im not knocking everyone with these jobs, and definatly honor people that will work hard for money than steal)but its usually people that fall into this catagory. All I know is my toy and model collection is worth than those a-holes house and vehicles combined. And I dont even have a 9-5 job. They can go ahead and talk poo and go to work. Ill go ahead and stay home, be "immature" watching anime, and dust off my collection of toys just to admire the details. And all those cornholes that talked smack when I was in school. All I got to say is, HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW? IM RICH BIIIIIATCH! B))

Then you can rent it online and have them delivered to you directly. Also who cares what some clerk thinks, it's your money that you are spending NOT theirs, so screw that they think. And as for having guests over and your sister yelling at you, your place your rules. If anything you should be yelling at them for not observing them and respecting your privacy. I certainly wouldn't give a frag if my sister yelled at me. And on that same otken I wouldn't tell her all of her clothing, jewelry, accessories, beauty stuff and the like is stupid and/or a waste of money either. It's your life live it the way you want without concern of others unimportant opinions.

I'm 32 years old and still indulge in the hobbies I enjoyed since my teen years,in addition to my so-called "adult" hobbies(ie:firearms and firearm related sports). Those "teen" hobbies are Classic Battletech Wargaming and Anime(particulary Macross).

People do ask questions like "aren't you a little old for that?" or "isn't that kind of stuff for kids?" So I understand how some fans feel when comments/questions like these come up. I know older fans who,in the face of such sentiment, decide that they can enjoy their anime, but only "on the sly".It becomes a "guilty pleasure",like Star Trek or porno.Imagine their suprise when they find out that there are plenty of older folks who continue to openly enjoy their anime, and don't give a crap what others think.Like me.

Watching anime IS NOT immature.

One is immature if one likes to watching all "animated" pictures.....

Anime and scifi modeling -- modeling in general are good hobbies, much prefer over drinking and partying by me.

First of all nice Valk :) . Anime will never be immature because of too many people that like it. I think anime is art and drama put together with japanese drawings. So if some one says anime is immature or dumb what so ever they say just screw them(Not the bad way) . Most people that dont like anime are hard core metal or rock fans, gothic people, and much more. I hope I didnt I didnt offend anyone thier :( if I did Im sorry ;) . But I'll grow up knowing that Anime will get better and liked more everyday.

Im big Macross fan so for Haloween I might dress up as Hikaru or Isamu, ya know to see if some one in my area heard of Macross. But OTAKU is errrrr  .

i'm a big fan of Macross but I don't wallow in it like others I guess, nor wear shirts or color my hair like one...

I have a collection of some of the toys and dvds but other than that, that's pretty much it.

I'm not into customizing or re-painting my valks as they are very expensive to even risk re-touching them...

i'm not a hardcore fan...

Snooze

BTW, what's OTAKU? What the heck does that mean?

I'm 34 and have been enamoured with anime since watching Starblazers when I was in 5th or 6th grade at the local Boy's Club.  Macross just cemented the deal and I've never looked back.

You and me both. When I had to go to moms house, which my grandmother was there to, I told my son to pick up his manga and my mother asked what manga was so I showed her. Her responce was I dont like that and I dont want it in my house. So being the smart arse I am I turned to her and said,

"Ok no problem, Im sorry mom Im not into doing stained glass as you and I guess you rather me spend money that I set aside for me and my family on drugs and other things?? Ok eveyone pack up, electricty or not we are going home! (with the deletion of a few choice and colorful words)"

Talk about someone saying they are sorry real fast. Honestly all I can say is that Anime and Manga is something that my whole family enjoys, hell we rather sit down and watch anime than some of those shows they show on TV. I am starting to think that Anime has atleast a better grip on reality than some of those "reality shows."

i've had a few instances of this type of behavior from a few "ignorant & uncultured idiots".i'm getting ready to turn 32 & to stop watching animated shows cause they're childish is just dumb.i don't get much teasing, cause i'm a good sized irishman w/ a short fuse, but anyone i've encountered that rags on someone for enjoying anime, wasn't anybody i'd be trying to impress anyway.if your older buds rag on ya for that, most of the time it's the dumbasses that can't pull a honey no matter what they try anyway,so don't take advice from these "mental giants" dude.don't follow the crowd, always do what you want & watch the honeys flock to you.enjoy. ;)

One other thing to take into consideration is the stereotype of anime people and gamers and such... fat slobby people who don't bathe much. And the sad part is that it's true a hell of a lot.

As such, I am going to start a new campaign to improve the public image of anime fans and gamers...

We must all join together and make sure we BATHE... at least once a day...

It won't be easy though, iIf you don't turn into some social retard who barely moves enough to feed themselves after playing world of warcraft 6 hours a day for months like friends I know, then I award you a medal. :D

Some people will not give up thier addictions just to be cool or to fit in. They let themselves become what they are because they chose to do so. Leave them alone I say. Who really cares what's normal anyway?

As for the comment about reality shows I doubt even those are actually real. What you really see is just a snapshot of the main events of the day and if it can get ratings it will be added in to "create a story" to fit into a show. There is still a level of control going on, in what the audience can see.

Life is probably much more dull, routine and uneventful for lots of people that they need to escape once in a while. The stereotypical comic book guy from the simpsons is real, (there are people like that) but not a representation of the lot of people. It's just those that obsess over thier image that worry themselves too much and that might be scared to be labeled, being the ones that are probably making the others worry. Learning to not give a poo about what others think is an important skill. :D

If you are one of those people who can't feel comfortable about your hobbies and have to hide them, then that is sad.

Remember my first post about those freinds of mine who called me immature, well lask night i had a very nice surprise for them. B))

Last night i invited those anime snobs, who i call friends to watch Gun Slinger Girl!!!

As we started one of my friends said, "Why the hell are we watching anime with little girls in them? this sucks!!!". But low a behold as we progressed through the first episode my freinds were shocked!!! Especially that scene were Henrietta bitch slaps to death a terrorists then in Antonio Banderas' Desparado style, pulls out an FN-90 SMG from here violin case and sprays lead all over the place. Boy the looks on my freinds faces were priceless after that :D , at that moment i really wished a had a digital camera on hand.

In the end one of mehj friends told me and I quote ;) "This Anime thing your watching sure is pretty cool." Sadly no apologies were forthcoming for what they said earlier about my wathcing macross zero.

BTW for those who have'nt seen the anime, the images below might give u an idea, Henrietta is featured in all 3 pics.

Anime is (majority of the time) cartoons for kids. But there's nothing wrong with watching it. Look at Graham...Married and with a child...yet he still hangs around here....

I just see it as entertainment. If I find it entertaining to watch, then I'll watch it. Even if some of it does have tentecles going up some school-girl's skirt, shirt and down her throat.....

325410[/snapback]

I think there is anime for kids and anime for adult people. That's the difference between cartoons and anime. That's a difference between occidental animation (general) and anime. Just to mention an example: The Wings of Honneamise movie, this is an animation aimed for grow up people, Macross, Patlabor and others are for more mature people too. If you talk about Sailor Moon (i saw it, and I like it :) ) or Sakura Card Captor (same as SM), Dragon Ball and all the Pokemon style "animes" out there those are kids aimed animes.

But, the main thing here is, if you liked, why you need to think if other do too, just be your self and let the others do what they want.

Interesting discussion, I felt I had to chime in, I'm 33 and watch all manner of cartoons, many started out as stuff my 6 year old would watch but then they started growing on me. For example some of the episodes of Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Odd Parents and Spongebob are hilarious.

At my age I'm "mature" enough not to care what other people think.

Let's look at the definition of immature: (from Websters online)

1. Not fully grown or developed. See Synonyms at young.

2. Marked by or suggesting a lack of normal maturity

So the first definition seems to point to being young or youthfull, at 33 I'll take all the youth I can get.

The second definition points to a vague word we all know as "normal", what's normal? If you could follow a hundred different people around for a week with a video camera you'd learn that no one is "normal".

There also seems to be a lot of discussion in this thread around what's for children what is for adults. As you get older I hope you all come to realize the distinction between childish and childlike.

Having two young children myself I can tell you that they have some childlike qualities that I wish more adults have: honesty, ability to see things from a completely open point of view, unconditional love, the ability to experience pure joy.

They also have some childish qualities that I see all too often in adults that they could do without: selfishness, whining for what they want, tantrums when they don't get their way, etc...

So next time you find yourself doing something you "feel" could be perceived as childish or immature, ask yourself; am I being childish or childlike? Who am I worried about thinking me immature and out of the "norm" and what sicko things does that person do when they're home alone with the lights out...

Anime for adults = porn. Macross +/0 is aimed at a more mature but young audience (junior high/high school). But at the same time, SDFM and M7 are for a audience younger than that (elementary/junior high) Same with Patlabor and Wings of Honneamise. It's still for kids. It happens to be targetted at old kids (junior high/high school), but still kids. Shows like Doremon or Detective Conan, are for a much younger (elementary school) audience.

Well OK, adult = porn :D agree.

SDFM is for kits but you can't put it at the same lvl as Pokemon. M+ and even Macross 2 are more mature, DYRL is at the same lvl of M+. M7 dosn't count :D
