This is what happens when you forget to train a Jedi the basics, like how to turn on the lightsaber.
At least someone figured out how to use it the old fashioned way.

One thing going for this show is that it is set in a different era. That should mean no dumbass elements to connect it to the Filoni/verse like with Kenobi.

Do we know anything about what the story's supposed to be?

As long as it's not messing about in the space between movies, that'd be a huge breath of fresh air.

Honestly the best thing Star Wars can do is to stay away from existing Star Wars, wether that’s new or old

Was expecting more from Tales of the Empire, but kinda underwhelmed.

I guess Dooku and Ahsoka just made more compelling characters and stories, compared to Morgan and Barriss.

I like Morgan’s character (and I enjoyed her whuppin’ a certain punk-ass character here), but it all felt very by-the-numbers.

Looking back at it,

Spoiler

I’m more curious how the hell she gained an acumen for building/improving tech (the TIE Defender and that intergalactic hyperspace ring) and how she acquired that beskar spear.

Barriss’ story was interesting but didn’t have that much emotional punch.

Spoiler

Would’ve thought Vader would’ve said or did something to her.  She was the ultimate cause of Ahsoka leaving the Order after all.

I watched the first episode of Tales of the Empire and am not sure I'll watch anymore. I have no idea who this character is, the story was pretty thin, and I'm just not interested in what happens next.

^^Well, the first three eps focus on Morgan Elsbeth, the beskar spear wielding lady in Mandalorian and one of the antagonists in Ahsoka (who has a few kickass fight scenes in the finale).  They try to give her some backstory, but the only interesting bits were her interactions with the Empire's military brass.  Kinda wish they had flesh out a few other things about the character, rather than some of the stuff we saw on-screen.

Other than a quick fight with Greivous, not much saber-wielding in those first three eps.

. . . Can't say the same for the last three eps though.

Just finished watching Tales of Morgan and Barriss.....meh

Once again, Disney/Lucasfilm seem to think we need to have the background story for every character....this time it was for characters we arguably did not need any background story for....are these background stories supposed to make us feel sorry for both Morgan's and Barriss' "tragic" fates?

Not exactly what I thought a Tales of the "Empire" would have focused on....oh well....I'm sure The Acolyte will be great!

I won't bother to go any further with the series, then.

The problem is, fans, like this one, keep saying "I want more. I want to see how <X character> got there." As the saying goes: fans don't know what they want. They have no clue what is good or bad; important or fat. We don't need to see everything because, sometimes, it's just not THAT important. It's why we get lots of crap. It's the one thing fandoms, including Star Wars', just doesn't get. Sometimes the most important moment of a character's life is just that moment; that one story. Everything else is filler.

If a movie was any good to begin with all the background information you "need" to know about a character is what was told in the movie.

That’s what made the og films so good. I didn’t need a background story to Vader. Everything was laid out just fine as the trilogy went. Then the prequels came out and we were given a character that could barely emote, whined all the time, hated sand and was groomed by an older character that should have known better than to be attracted to children as his motives.

To be frank, I'm not sure that's necessarily true.

On an individual level, many fans do seem to have a pretty clear idea of what they want from Star Wars. All you have to do is ask and many of them will tell you quite a lot about what precisely they want from it. They just can't manufacture a consensus because the fanbase is so bloody big and so heavily divided against itself.

It surely doesn't help that what the die-hard fans want and what is actually marketable are often two very different things. Tales of the Empire is exactly the kind of writing which the franchise has historically used to pander to that die-hard crowd. Their whole "every single background character is the hero or villain of another story" schick is standard expanded universe writing and something that Star Wars frequently indulged in before Disney. So much so that even a filthy casual like me had one or two of the "Tales of ______" books. It might be weak writing to general audiences, but to the die-hard fans it's continuity porn.

If they can't come to a consensus, then they don't know what they want.

Continuity is both a blessing and curse. It's a nice way to fill in the gaps, but I didn't need it documented what a character had for brunch on a Sunday afternoon. If you dig too deep into continuity porn, you enter the mundane. Then it becomes lousy storytelling.
