derex3592 Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I've landed at SF a few times and it DOES feel like you are going to land in the water when you come in on that runway like he was...it's kinda freaky.
Bri Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Awesome fighter jet pics (just trust me, their thumbnail link system hasn't been updated in years, and is now incompatible with most forum software) http://www.airliners.net/photo/Russia---Air/Sukhoi-T-50/2261755/L/ http://www.airliners.net/photo/Malaysia---Air/Sukhoi-Su-30MKM/2259985/L/ http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/Panavia-Tornado-IDS/2256204/L/ http://www.airliners.net/photo/Czech-Republic--/Saab-JAS-39C-Gripen/2029423/L/ Amazing pics from interesting angles.
Beltane70 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Despite this being old news, I used to love playing on this plane as a kid!
raptormesh Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Here's an interesting photo on perspective. I think it's relevant because its what i usually see when I place my VF-1 next to my VF-0. I do realize that the Phoenix is a bit larger than 1/60 in scale but compare the apparent sizes of the pilots in the image. The F1 is in the foreground.
electric indigo Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 The F1 is in the foreground. I think it's also a little scared...
LOW_ALT Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Another size comparison: Speaking of size comparisons:
raptormesh Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 (edited) This pic makes them look like two cute dogs being distracted by something on the left. Bloody majestic machines. Edited July 19, 2013 by raptormesh
PetarB Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Awesome photograph. Still one of the most amazing designs of last century. Who know, perhaps the Skylon will continue it's beauty this century....
LOW_ALT Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I found this picture from when the tsunami hit Japan while digging through one of my flash drives. Despite being carried away from it's base and smashed into a building it looks surprisingly intact, though I'm sure the engine is ruined.
raptormesh Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I read something like 8 of their F2s were entirely written off due to deep corrosion from sea water. These birds aren't cheap.
antibiotictab Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 This is JASDF Matsushima Airbase, near Ishinomaki. According to Wikipedia, 28 airplanes including 4 helicopters were ruined.
Vifam7 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) 18 of the two-seat F-2Bs were damaged. Initially, only 6 were considered repairable. However, the defense minister earlier this year said, he's planning to add 7 more to the repair list. Edited July 25, 2013 by Vifam7
raptormesh Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) Control, this is Omega One... Some perspective: This happened 23 years ago, almost entire generation has gone by and we have nothing to surpass its sleek, almost ephemeral lines. Edited July 25, 2013 by raptormesh
F-ZeroOne Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) Awesome photograph. Still one of the most amazing designs of last century. Who know, perhaps the Skylon will continue it's beauty this century.... I admire your faith that my government will actually somehow conspire to make it happen. Having said, they have just secured about £120 million of development funding from both the British government and the European Union. Edited July 25, 2013 by F-ZeroOne
Shadow Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 The Su-27 has nothing on mother nature as far as knocking out an F-16/F-2. @raptormesh: Great picture. I still wonder if the YF-23 could serve as an effective replacement for the F-15E. The Black Widow looks like it could carry a decent bomb load, better than the Raptor can atleast.

frothymug Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I still think it's ugly. Oh boyy... I think I will take cover behind this flame-retardant material and break out the popcorn.
mechaninac Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I still think it's ugly. Heathen! Blasphemer! Unclean!
Bri Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Despite being carried away from it's base and smashed into a building it looks surprisingly intact, though I'm sure the engine is ruined. Hope it can be salvaged. Even though the bird is trashed that sea camo pattern still looks very nice. Some perspective: This happened 23 years ago, almost entire generation has gone by and we have nothing to surpass its sleek, almost ephemeral lines. YF-23, the one example that proves stealth aircraft don't have to be but ugly.
David Hingtgen Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 I think the Su-35 was inspired by the YF-21-----it seems to be trying to have an all-seeing external sensor suite for the pilot:

That's a good idea actually, it's faster and stealthier than the YF-22 during the trials. There were some blueprints with enlarged weapons bay floating around too iirc. Would be a good platform for neutralising the enemy's c3 or to hunt opposing AWACS.
Bariaburu Faita Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Some people in Japan still proudly support the Osprey
Shadow Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) lol, Great patch emblem. Living under any flightline, there are going to be risks. I don't think the general attitude there would be much different if it were CH-46 and 53s flying around. Edited August 3, 2013 by Shadow
David Hingtgen Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 The most insanely-accurate/detailed/complex/complete R/C model jet ever, by far: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ccb_1375442777(no, it doesn't crash at the end) PS---anyone know how to embed from liveleak here? I can get it to show up in post-preview, but not the actual post.

derex3592 Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 (edited) OMG...that thing is amazing...we need him to build the all time ultimate VF-1!!!!! Doesn't have to fly! Just be in that scale with that level of detail! Be more $$$ than a new car...but never mind that! Edited August 4, 2013 by derex3592
Beltane70 Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 I had to keep reminding myself that it was a R/C model and not a full-size aircraft! With the incredible detail, you'd almost swear that they somehow just shrank a real plane instead of building a model.

David Hingtgen Posted August 7, 2013 Author Posted August 7, 2013 It's not often you see a 737 with the weapons bay open:
VF5SS Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 http://flight-highschool.tumblr.com/ are you guys following this comic? it's amazing read left to right
danbickell Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 It's not often you see a 737 with the weapons bay open: Thanks for that! We've been working on a project at the office involving the P-8, and Boeing couldn't provide reference this good. They look even cooler carrying Harpoons under the wings!
anime52k8 Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 This is the first time I've ever noticed that 737's have exposed rear landing gear. You learn something new every day I guess.
David Hingtgen Posted August 9, 2013 Author Posted August 9, 2013 That's been a 737 trademark since day one. They do at least have very aerodynamic hubcaps. (Seriously)
David Hingtgen Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 South Africa's Gripens seem to have a unique camo pattern: And the Czechs have done one of the more creative Tiger Meet markings I've seen:
