Thinking about it, I agree that I wouldn't trust floor polish alone. Let me look to see if I can find an acrylic version.

UPDATE: I wonder if this would work:

You can buy gold and bronze flake to mix into something like Tamiya clear yellow/orange. Even if you used gold laquer paint as your first layer you would just need to dust enough of it onto the inside of the canopy to give the illusion of a metallic diffusion before coming in behind it with you clear color acrylic paints.

Or you could possibly can grab some Mr. Metal Primer, which is clear as your base layer. Dusting. Let fully dry. Light coat. That is what some of the FSS modelers use for clear resin parts when trying to preserve the translucency before moving to pearlescents.

Many options.

@Rock I think the biggest problem here is the size of the "flakes/sparkles".  Most metallics have too big of metal particles for the scale of the model.  You don't want it to look sparkly (kind of like what the Bandai VF-31 canopies look like - that would be the worst case senario).  It needs to look like mylar film, a translucent metal without any visible particles would be the trick.

Just finished this morning. next may be a Regult, VF1 Battroid and fighter combo display or a minmay guard strike battroid.

Looks great.

Would love to see that regult. Personally I can’t get tired of seeing those

@Rock Awesome looking Black Cat. You could use that for Black Bunny!

I don't enjoy painting black kits or I'd consider. Blackbird, Stealth Bomber, and a handful of Yukikaze kits in the stash have placeholders for a black finish amd that is enough for me. I still have 2 cats to build, one will have to be a Jolly Rodger Bombcat, the other is my grail kit, one with every pannel opened up for service (late 90's Tomcatters.)

Highly rec the Trinity stencils over freehand marbling. You can over thin your paint to use less materials. Also resulting in way less paint filling the (Tamiya super thin) panel lines while you build up layers. There is also the fact you can do a whole 1/48 bird in about an hour!

Keen eyes will spot some early A exclusive parts!

Black is oddly the best paint for coverage as a base coat or primer. But getting shading or weathering can be tricky. If you shade using a pure black base and then mix the black with shades of dark grey, the problem is getting a grey that doesn’t look grey and doesn’t blend so well that you can’t see the tone.
with weathering it’s easy to lose the work since it can just accidentally get too dark. I remember using some of the tamiya weathering compacts and after adding dull coat all the work darkened and it became invisible and had to redo things a lot lighter

@Rock - I've got my brass breakup pattern stencils ready to go for my 1/72 F-18! Going to do exactly what you are doing to the Cat!

Just pay attention to you paint. If they are PE sheet thin stencils, don't try to scrub them clean as you'll bend them up in the process. Soak in appropriate (paint type dependent) thinner.

He looks great and he is in a real cool setting. Just fantastic!

He may need some cosmetic work to knock down the shine though.😉

That's coming up: I'm getting ready to use 0000 grade steel wool to buff the armor, them clearcoat, then the transparent colors for the subtle effects.

BTW: I finally managed to get a functioning unhelmeted head (second pic).

Holly crap! So much great work here!

@Kurt those figures look great as does the tank! Love the mud and scuffs on the paint.

@Rock those belts and buckles really level up the scale effect and that paint job looks like it's gonna be killer. Can't wait for the finished shots.

@pengbuzz Murphy looks really good👍. Sweet little dio display too, really sets off the build well and is very evocative of the film. Perfect way to display a character build!

@HWR MKII always loved the look of that jet- so real world, and so Sci-fi cool at the same time. You really did a fine job of making it shine.

So many great builds I'm sure I missed some.

Finished up the gunship from Nausicaa this weekend. Nothing special, just a straight OOB build. Perhaps I'll do a folded wing version with the Tsukuda kit that's still in the stash.

Had a minor scrape, down the left side rear fuselage below the rear cockpit when I installed the windscreen. Other than that and the mis-aligned lines in the flaps on the left wing (didn't  notice 'till it was too late to fill and rescribe) I feel pretty good 'bout this one.

Weekend updates

Superhornet cockpit competed and more painting on the Brad.

.....Yes, I know my wheels are a different color, no, I don't know why and yes, it's annoying. XF-59 Enamel and XF-59 Acrylic should have been the same color or a lot closer than that ... LOL

@derex3592Thom's right, derex; those wheels are going to darken anyways due to road grime and other stuff. The darker color will actually work for you on this!!

Started trying making blu tac snakes to mask the camo and quickly found that that was a waste of time and ruined my foundational efforts. Freehand it is relying of preshading techniques and thinned overcoats.

Edit: cant attach pic it seems via mobile20240112_132821.jpg.96b95c9ab8d900554915c3e254c3e080.jpg

Always feels weird to see it written down as "gray" and not "grey" haha :)

@Rock I find using worm masking much easier since I can concentrate on the coverage and texture without having to hit the demarcation line on each panel. I also start with the darkest color, because when you paint over the light color border later, it will look different from the other areas with the dark primer coat.

@pengbuzz Looks like Robo is "Takin' out the trash!" 😁 I'm glad you didn't give up and was able to make his face work!

@Chas That gunship looks nice-n-clean! I love that model (the original and Bandai versions)! I started one with folding wings. I gotta dig it out some day and finish it. Nice touch chroming the letters too.

@derex3592 No snow day here😕, just a delay. Your Hornet and Bradley are looking REALLY good!

@Rock I've never tried that technique before. I'll be watching what you do to see how it works out😉 It's always fun learning new things! - MT

I went light to dark as the darker colors covered the base layers faster with less paint. Even if my lighter color's coat had fuzzy edges, it was easily correctable with the darker colors without loosing the ground work. I had to come back in a few places with the tan to correct some of the camo patterns, somehow ot dodn't really take away from the soft edge/shading.

It may be a scale thing though as IIRC you keep working on them tiny scales, lol.

Thank my wife for that: she ended up finding the head behind her computer (I literally couldn't find it after throwing it across the room!). It doesn't look all that much like Peter Weller, but I did my best.

*I HATE Robert Burke and Richard Eden's versions; they look plain weird!*

@nightmareB4macross Lots-o-putty! Sanding that ABS must be a pain! Sometimes the only way to get a smooth finish on it is to wet sand. I started the Nichimo 1/200 Battleship Yamato years ago. ALL ABS. I sold it after only a few assemblies, it didn't want to cement easily or cleanly sand. If you haven't heard, the BEST glue for ABS is straight Acetone. Unfortunately, I only found that out years after selling the Yamato😕 - MT

I built in a brace to hold Murphy so he doesn't fall over on display:

Thanks for the compliments.

I have been using Plastic Weld and the acetone eats and melts parts, sometimes causing divers and voids. Also, this mold is not exactly perfect.  When I mate sheets to it I can feel the surfaces are uneven. So I use a little putty help smooth it out.

Swing plates coming shortly.
