derex3592 Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 (edited) Got my fan racer in the mail yesterday! What a great little kit! Can't wait to start building again...Been outta the game for almost 12 yrs....anyway...anybody around here wanna break me off some knowledge on the following.... #1--on a darker mold color such as this-is it smart to do a "primer coat" of white or something before you actually airbrush the final color of white? and #2--what paints are the best nowadays and what colors did any of you use on the fan racer???--I use to use Testors Model Master, which I thought were always great, with the exception of any white colors, but there are ZERO hobby shops left where I live so I will have to order all my supplies online I guess..., any and all help greatly appreciated! MechTech Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Hey Derex, I've always liked Tamiyas's paints. Priming is kind of a choice for some people. I personally normally don't use it unless I've got all kinds of colored putty underneath. Have fun getting back into building! - MT

Normally I don't prime, but due to the darker grey plastic I did a coat of white primer for my fan racer. Helps the orange/red stand out without having to layer it on too thick. I recommend Tamiya's paints too. My little fan racer is all Tamiya except for a little fine marker work on the panel lines and Hikaru... flat white primer, gloss white, medium grey, orange, flat black, and flat aluminum for the plane, then orange, yellow, flesh, semi-gloss black, and sky blue for Hikaru. derex3592 Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 OK Guys....sorry the pics kinda suck....I need a better camera, or to learn to use this one better, anyway, here is my FAN RACER....My first model in over 10 years....Built over about 3 days of Memorial Day Weekend. Chose Tamiya Spray paint cans instead of the airbrush for this one...turned out pretty good...that Hikaru pilot was a b*tch to paint right, but I am proud of how he came out. Still have a minor touch up here and there, but overall, I think it turned out pretty good! Really getting back into modeling! Ready to try something a little larger....LOL.... Ohh, and the stand is stolen from an old 1/100 VF-1S I never finished...so I thought "Hey, just paint that stand and use it!"
EXO Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 Awesome!!! what a coincidence, I just built mine also over the weekend. Mine doesn't have the pilot though... YET! Where'd you get the stand. And white fans! I like it. I followed the Yamato pics and painted mine gray but I like the contrast on yours.

derex3592 Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) Actually, the darker fan blade is Model Master "Steel"--one of my favorite colors ever, and the back fan is Tamiya Flat Aluminum. Can't tell from the pics, but I took some liberty and said hey, why not make em contrast a little, Maybe poor Rick--errrrr Hikaru had upgraded one but didn't have enough $$$ for both... The stand is a left over from a 1/100 VF-1S kit i never finished. Miria-----If you're referring to the stand red--It's just plain old Testors Gloss Red in a spray can--Cheap but effective! miriya Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 Actually I was wondering what Tamiya spray red you used for the fan racer itself. Woops. My bad I see that you have stated prviously that it is orange. Thanks.
derex3592 Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Woops. My bad I see that you have stated prviously that it is orange. Thanks. Yeah, just used Tamiya spray can "Orange Gloss"---However--be aware that the little bottle of liquid Tamiya "Orange" is NOT a match!!! I used Testors normal everyday "Orange" to match the Tamiya spray for touch ups.
Kicker773 Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Did the kit come with a pilot or where da hell did you guys get the sitting hikaru?
EXO Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Should have been with the angelbirds and there was the clear one and the gray one I believe.
m0n5t3r Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 does anybody have a problem keeping the canopy shut? any mods for rectifying this problem? btw, thanks for the pilot fig exo.
Jasonc Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Those fan racers are looking sweet. I think I have like 3 of them that I haven't built. At least 2. I'm gonna have to get these going soon.
EXO Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 does anybody have a problem keeping the canopy shut? any mods for rectifying this problem? btw, thanks for the pilot fig exo. I did... Unfortunately I forgot... I'm trying to think what it was! DAMN!!! It's killing me now.
jenius Posted August 24 Posted August 24 I wanted to do some DX vs Yamato Fan Racer comparisons and was hoping someone could help me get my history right: 1st Yamato fan racer was the WHITE version, sold in a box, with 1000 available at the 2009 hobby show with the rest available through Yamato's website. NO PILOT. 2nd release is the CLEAR version that was packaged with the Angelbirds in December 2010 through Macross Chronicle with more being released in May 2011. Did this version include the pilot? I'm under the impression it did not.Ā 3rd release (I think) is the CLEAR version on the Yamato website WITH a pilot figure 4th release is the pearl gray version that was available through normal retail and includes the pilot figure. Can anyone confirm if I have that correct?Ā

NO PILOT. Yeah, that was the Shizuoka Hobby Show in May of 2009.Ā Promotional images were posted on Toyark. I had to scratch-build a set of landing gear for mine back in the day, since the only way I could justify displaying it without a pilot was parked on the tarmac. The lack of landing gear would've been acceptable if there'd been a pilot figure, but the lack of both pilot AND landing gear was inexcusable.Ā š”
Shawn Posted August 24 Posted August 24 I did not know there were 2 clear versions, I thought just one. But I remember NOTHING lol. Checking out the Chronicle article
Shawn Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Did find this which says the clear version does come with the pilot...I think that was the question
jenius Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Awesome thank you both! Looking at HLJ, they show the pearl gray one being available December 2009 so I think maybe it's this: 1st Yamato fan racer was the WHITE version, sold in a box, with 1000 available at Shizuoka Hobby Show in May of 2009 with the rest available through Yamato's website. NO PILOT. 2nd releaseĀ is the pearl gray version that was available through normal retail. WITH PILOT. 3000 Yen December 2009. 3rd release is the CLEAR version that was packaged with the Angelbirds in December 2010 through Macross Chronicle with more being released in May 2011. WITH PILOT. Maybe some more of the clear version were available on the Yamato website.
derex3592 Posted August 25 Posted August 25 I know the Yamato Fan Racer kit I got from somewhere had the pilot with it.Ā I don't thiiiiink I bought it with my Angel Birds release, but I can't say for sure.Ā No Landing gear though did bum me out. I had plans to make a cool diorama with the 1:60 hand painted Petite Cola machine and figures from @EXOĀ back in the day along side the Yamato VF-1D and Roy's TV-1S and the Angel Bird 1A.Ā
Goodman Models Posted August 31 Posted August 31 Holy moly those 2 listings are $300+! That seems like those inflated eBay prices. Does anyone know what the original price was?Ā
Bolt Posted August 31 Posted August 31 I don't recall but others surely do. I'm guessing a $100 bucks less than evilbay. Unfortunately we're now banned from the land of the rising sun, so Mandrake is probably not an option. Hopefully a fellow MW'er will hear you song and sell you oneĀ
Major Tom Posted August 31 Posted August 31 (edited) Well if anybody want a yamato fan racer I got one in the sale section: If you just want the fan racer kit by itself I can split it from the Angel birds Edited August 31 by Major Tom
