So Who Actually Likes Macross?

And this all relates to why you love Macross, how? <_<

You know, I don't even touch any of my Macross DVDs/VHS/toys these days. I still love it, but with my backlog and other things, it just serves as nostalgia. :(

SDFM is nostalgia.

DYRL? is also nostalgia.

Flashback? Clip show. I just skip to the end, even when I first watched it.

MII, nice music. Spotty animation.

M+, nice music, nice visuals, predictable story.

M7? Finally a change. Broke the singing idol mold finally. Animation is lower...but then I remember it was a weekly TV show, just like SDFM.

M0? At least we aren't repeating the same formula. It was nice to see some other themes in Macross. Hope the creators continue mixing things.

Because Macross Plus music is truly among the greatest of the musical arts, worthy to sit on the highest pedestal with musical gods such as those I mentioned.

I agree. Reba has the voice of a whiney child, judging from the voice acting in Robotech.

Macross Plus had some great sounds, but I wouldn't go that far.

As for those "musical gods", I would add Blank and Jones, plus ATB to that list.

Well, placing Yoko Kanno that high up is a matter of opinion. Modern musical, maybe, but overall....that would be quite a long reach.

She seems to be ingenious in adapting different styles. She can play/arrange almost anything but the more I listen to it the more I think I have heard something similar before.

The M+ soundtrack blew me away at first but after some time I felt there is not that much originality in it. Take a bowl, put some Stravinsky, Badalamenti, Ry Cooder, Ryuichi Sakamoto and a couple of different World Music pieces into it, throw in a bunch of J-pop-tunes, stir and out comes M+.

I have had the same experience with Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop - not that I don´t like these soundtracks, in fact I still love them for what they are, but I cannot see the godlike genius that some people seem to associate with Yoko Kanno!

For a show in the mid-90's, it was inexcusable.

369486

What mid 90's are you talking about? It's no worse than any of its contemporary series

-Gundam Wing

-Tekkaman Blade

-Escaflowne

-Irresponsible Captain Tylor

just to name a few. All character models stayed spot on during the entire run of the show, which is more than can be said for most series.

Comparing it similarly poorly animated shows doesn't help your argument, Keith. Shows that would have looked bad in the 80's (Hell, Tekkaman Blade makes Anime Friend's work look good).

Three words, Keith: Neon Genesis Evangelion

Hell, I'd go as far to say SDC Southern Cross had more consistant animation than Macross 7. Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, hell, shows much older than Macross 7.

-Gundam Wing

Macross 7 should be compared to shows of similar length. Gundam Wing is OK, and indeed had crappy animation. Macross 7's chara is still better, though.

-Escaflowne

Escaflowne was not consistent because Yuuki was working for the movie X at the same time, and there were obviously some quality drop in the second half, but aside from this it was high budget, with a decent amount of (non integrated) CG, that at the time was uncommon for a TV series. Also there was little recycle of footage.

Evangelion has good animation but with a low number of drawings and lots and lots of still shots, and sketchy backgrounds. Unparalleled direction, but there was better animation than that.

In the order that I like most to least:

1. DYRL

2. Macross Plus

3. SDF-Series/2012FB. I consider these a two-pack rather than seperate.

4. Macross Zero

5. Macross II

Never seen 7 or Dynamite, so I really can't rate them.

I honestly can put my full devotion to the model kits and Valkyries. I never really was into the whole Zentradi conflict, as these alien beings just seemed, well cliched. somewhat. Althought I do find quite a few similar ties with the Macross universe and that of Wing Commander (the Kilrathi fleet).

So yeah, I wish they had the SDF series versus perhaps a group of humans who were enemies, as somewhat akin to the Macross Zero setting. I somehow prefer modern technology vs modern technology than alien technology.

Personally I thought that Macross was far from a cliche. The alien vs human story had a differenet twist to it in the Macross universe, Kawamori did well to provide a background (protoculture etc.) to bring the humans' vs. aliens idea from a new perspective.

Robotech had a pretty good BGM. You could also argue that the songs in The New Generation are superior to much of what was in MOSPEADA. Actually, I think MOSPEADA has some of the most consistantly bad music of any anime I have ever watched.

Macross with the original songs, but the Robotech BGM? It would be insteresting to see how it worked.

368958

I'd hate to agree with you that the Robotech BGM used in the original would be good, but it was a lot better than the original Macross one in most stages. When I watch the original, I was surprised and rather uncomfortable at the lack of BGM in most of the scenes.

Sorry for the double post, thought I might as well use it....

So what you're saying is, you're uncomfortable without being bombarded with cheesey synth blarring every second telling you how to feel? I don't see that as superior music. And I honestly don't see how anyone couldn't love Mospeada's soundtrack!

Pretty easily, actually...

It sounds like it was recorded in my shower.

The lyrics are horrid.

The singing is karaoke bar bad.

The BGM is weak, at best.

Let's see, did I miss anything?

I loved Mospeada, but I know what people mean when they say the soundtrack isn't the best. It's not the catchiest music.

The Macross BGM was okay but not exactly memorable, while the Minmay songs were very good. In Robotech, the situation was reversed -- the BGM was spectacular (it's not all synth as some would have you believe) and the Minmay songs were just bad.

I'd say that a fair and accurate statement.

369462

Disagree, I guess. The accent is for me too distracting when no one else in the dub has a similar one. From what I've heard, it also wears at the believability of the chemistry between her and Hikaru. The main appeal of having Mari do the dub is so that HG could say, "HEY! IT'S MARI! IT'S 'REAL' MACROSS! BUY!" And it worked. Her inclusion lends some supposed credibility to their dub, but she would be a poor casting choice if we looked beyond the novelty of her presence.

I guess I care more for how things feel as a whole than whether she can pronounce certain names or manage to deliver her lines somewhat acceptably. As much as I appreciate her original work, I'm not willing to give her a break just because she's Mari, if in the end, I don't feel that she fits the particular production.

Yes, notice how I always treat Graham with love and respect, though we dissagree on Graham's usefullness as an admin.

Instead of insulting him I just tell him I am going to show up at his house and live on his couch and film porn there with siamese twin midgets attached at the tit... I still haven't insulted the guy but I'd bet he has nightmares about me.

Macross 7 series and OVA's N/A Havent seen it to make an opinion but I afraid to watch it.

Macross Zero N/A Havent seen it. Waiting for someone like ADV or Bandai to bring it here in the States.

I definitely liked SDF TV the best. I find DYRL asthestically pleasing yet disconnected story wise. Music videos aint bad. M+ wasn't bad but I like the movie version more than the series because the ending was a lot better. M2 could have been great but the story was lame...

Only really like SDF Macross and DYRL. Gave everything else a chance, but they just didn't have whatever it was that made SDF special to me  :p

369557

Have you seen Orguss or Megazone 23 Part 1? The something special might be Ishiguro Noboru's direction. I saw Orguss and mz23 and was like, "Wow! This has that something special Macross did that its sequels don't!"
