Considering we still talk about garbage like Dangaio, yes we would still be talking about Pacific Rim if it was anime.- 1207 replies

Its a reference to the lost nazi gold of WWII. Studies done after the end of the war showed that of all the valuables the nazi's looted during their control over Europe only about 1/3 to 1/2 was ever recovered. This coupled with the fact that several nazi party members and sympathizers fled europe for asylum in Argentina to avoid war crime tirbunals and executions. The story goes that they used looted valuables to bribe officials and start new lives in south america as wealthy business people. -

Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim'
renegadeleader1 replied to fifbeat's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
In a way yes. To give you an idea of how bad things are between the nations you should read this. http://www.cnbc.com/id/101300803 Basically two weeks ago the Japanese primeminister visited the shrine dedicated to the Japanese killed in WWII because his popularity was flagging. He knew it would tick off the Chinese because several people convicted of war crimes against them are also enshrined there. Pissing off the Chinese makes him look good in the eyes of his people and gave him a boost in approval even though the US admonished him for poor judgement.- 1207 replies

Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim'
renegadeleader1 replied to fifbeat's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
When it comes to China yes Japanese citizens can be that small minded. BBC did a poll that found only 5% of Japanese citizens viewed China in a positive light, and 64% negatively. When Pacific Rim dropped on Japan they were in the middle of a bad spat politically with China stemming from the 2012 trawler incident, the dispute over several islands in the gulf of China, and the fact that China is cutting the rate of raw materials exported to Japan and focusing more on its own consumption hurting Japan's economy. Its easy to see now why Pacific Rim would offend the Japanese people.- 1207 replies

1.No Japanese robot played a major role. 2.Japanese girl falls for American soldier. 3.Chinese are show in heroic light. 4.American saving little Japanese girl. 5.No strong Japanese male hero. Those are a few things that would offend the Japanese people in a film about giant robots. Its mostly the Chinese thing though.- 1207 replies

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3d673JKo9bc Yamato news 5 is up. Summary: 1.Shipping costs are fixed now. 2.special items will be given to people who pre-order the dvd or blu-ray. If its bought through that book store chain its what I'm guessing is a cell phone strap, but it isn't announced yet what it will be if you order through the website. 3.they're in negotiations with Right Stuf to sell the dvds and blu-rays on there. 4.they will be attending SDCC and AnimeExpo this year. No word yet on other conventions. 5.went over the reason she has the index cards and is doing the learning time stuff. Apart from being how it was done in Japan she explained they are trying to reach both "big" and "little" children. She goes out of her way to make it clear it was a response to a youtube question so I think it was her way of publicly shaming someone who was quite frankly being a dick. I think she's getting tired of being called a dumb bimbo, useless, and stupid looking. I can't blame her to be honest. It's not her fault the company hired her and put her in this situation or decided to go with a very Japanese style of marketing. If the roles were reversed I don't think a lot of us here would do that well fumbling through Japanese trying to sell an american show there.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
renegadeleader1 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
This reminds of the time I trudged my way through Hoop Days(aka Dear Boys) just bcause the writer and artist was Hiroki Yagami of G-Taste fame. The main character was something like 5'8" and could dunk like Jordan. The only other notable thing is the woman teacher that coaches both the girls and boys team is a swimsuit model outside of school and a lesbian in G-taste. Yes both series have a shared universe even though she is strictly professional in the Basketball manga. -
R.I.P Uncle Phil we'll miss you big man.

I'm impressed at how her english is getting much better. She still fumbles through some sentences, but its getting there. I think being in the states now and hearing how its normally spoken has helped her a bunch.

Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim'
renegadeleader1 replied to fifbeat's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I hope you aren't taking the "gets the crap beat out of" part literally.... ewww. The whole super heroine fetish thing is big over there, I can't really call it pr0n because often there's not even any nudity, just usually things like a female ultraman or all female power rangers teams that usually end up defeated, and slapped around with all the acting and harshness of a pro wrestling match. :shrugs:- 1207 replies

harlock bootleg dvds any good?
renegadeleader1 replied to brewdonkey1234's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The Discotek releases are fairly cleaned up, there's a little grit here and there, but looks pretty good for a show from the mid to late 70s. Definately better than Voyager Entertainment's poor quality StarBlazers releases or AnimEigo's Arcadia of My Youth. -
Anybody up for an oldschool challenge? I got an old MSV RGC-80 GM Cannon, and to be honest its well out of my league as far as skill level is concerned. No polycaps, no stickers, a few slide decals, no color mold injection, and just plain old white plastic.

harlock bootleg dvds any good?
renegadeleader1 replied to brewdonkey1234's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Sorry if I came off as abrasive earlier, I just don't like bootlegs period, and Harlock is a favorite of mine. I waited 20+ years to finally get it released in the states, all along hearing from companies how it was too old, too long, not worth the price, and there's no interest for it. I'm afraid if Harlock, and other classics don't get supported they'll never see the light of day over here ever again. Also not to knock your girlfriend, but at $90 plus shipping you got hosed pretty badly. Rightstuf.com has the Discotek release for $41, although with the sales on there the way they are its not uncommon to pick it up like I did for $30. I can't recommend rightstuf enough. Good luck getting your money back, Ebay is usually pretty good about bootlegs and will most likely reimburse your girlfriend's account. -

Why buy a bootleg when Discotek officially released the series subtitled on dvd less than 5 months ago? -
