    The old comic Dynamo Joe had a fairly plausible explination for the two pilot system. It was much like on a modern fighter where one was the true pilot and the other was the systems operator/engineer/mechanic to repair the bot in the field. It worked pretty well, and probably would have been better used here. To an extent though I think Del Toro was trying to embrace the general cheese behind giant super robot stories, that might even explain the BS tech specs, make it all over the top and crazy like your Getter Robo stuff. If that is what is going on I am fully behind it, but only time will tell. Remember trailers are designed to get you into the theatre and are not necessarily representative of the actual movie.

    While he has some good points in the article, it is for the most part poorly, written, researched, etc... Really, do they pay these people, sheesh.

    No Sir I don't like it! @Anime52k8, not everyone likes the look of the YF-23, but hands down it was the better, if slightly more expensive choice in the ATF competetion, the AF brass were just wowed by the fact that the YF-22, which flew last, could fire off a sidewinder (not a contract requirement for the competetion), and had thrust vectoring (again, not a contract requirement, at all). That and the YF-23 was just too different and futuristic looking for them, the much preferred the safer option of what is basically a stealth F-15.

    The biggest problem you are having WDC is that you are a technical person, whereas most folks creating these documents, are writers and artists and have as much technical know how as my 2 year old, no I take that back Rhys Asimov is a technical genius. They just throw numbers out to make it sound good, with no concept of what they really mean. The problem ultimately comes from the fact that most special effects artists who have never worked with real models or objects before. That is why so many ships, vehicles and robots in sci-fi now look so flimsy to those of us who remember them having bulk and mass. I will applaud the Pac Rim guys for at least making the robots look big and bulky and not have a bunch of flying off bits like on the bayformers.

    There are better ways to hide a ship though, and underwater is not really a good place to hide, especially given that the ship will be really HOT after making its atmo drop so the water will be boiling as a result, kind of a dead giveaway. Even then it will continue to boil as the ship exhausts its waste heat into the surrounding water. Magnetic variations, showing up on radar, etc... it is just a bad place to hide a functioning spaceship. More than likely that was used as a Cherkov's gun to show how the Big-E could survive its later crash into 'frisco bay.

    I am interested and hopeful since it is Del Toro. Will it make everyone happy, no, does it look like it will be a lot of fun, yes. Will we all come out of the movie with our inner 7 year old yelling, "Rocket Punch!" I think we all know the answer to that.

    I did not like the first one, too cheesy, the trailers last year for this one looked good, and not as cheesy, so we will see. But seeing more Tatum in the new trailer does not fill me with hope, I just hope that he does get killed off in the first act like originally thought.

    I have to agree with the Duke here, this looks like an unmitigated piece of crap, that doesn't insult the source material, but digs it up out of its grave, rapes it, then craps all over it before pissing on. Not only that it is a serious insult to all native american actors out there who are struggling to find work, just so they can put their golden boy johny depp in the costarring role.

    I like 0083, probably becuase I work in flight test, but I was never able to understand his fear of carrots, what the heck was that about, just a bit of comedy to was there suppossed to be a reason that was never adequately explained in the anime?

    I never hated the ending, I always thought it left things open to interpretation more than anything and really left the door open for the original series to still happen many many yahren later

    I am liking what I see so far because as stated it is a nice mix of old school anime super robots with enough new school tech to make them more believable to a modern audience. That being said WM Cheng is right, designing any large hero (character, alien, robot, plane, etc...) goes through a huge committee process now with everyone putting their say in. What this does give me hope for is a future mecha show more like macross with more realistic robots, and not the bayformer type crap designs. I definitely want to see them in motion before I make final judgement, but I like what I am seeing so far. Of course I still like the designs from Robot Jocks too, but that may just be the nostolgia talking. Also in regards to designing in a vaccuum, like WM Cheng said these aren't the days anymore when a mecha designer can go in and make a design that sees minimal changes before it hits the screens. You will have have movie execs, directors, producers, toy companies, marketting people, etc... all throwing their two cents in towards the designers hat.
