Star Trek Beyond (the not The Search for Spock)
Knight26 replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I attribute the low box office to a couple of factors: 1: Into Darkness was such a mess that it turned away a lot of fans, casual and hardcore. 2: CBS/Paramount lost a ton of goodwill with fans with the Axanar lawsuit. 3: Bad marketing. The first trailer was horrid and scared many people off, the second one helped, as did Simon Pegg's personal campaign, but still. 4: Anton's death. Believe it or not I know people who refused to see the movie because of how soon his death was in relation to the release. 5: Market saturation. There have been so many big blockbusters this year already that people are kind of burnt out. Ultimately, Trek 4 is in danger of not happening. This movie may see a comeback in home video sales, which if Trek 4's only chance. In truth though Trek belongs on the small screen. This movie would have made a phenomenal 2 part trek episode, which honestly is what it felt like. The early feelings on ST:D though have a lot of fans nervous, so that show will have to hit it out of the park. That fact that CBS is making it the flagship of their own streaming service isn't helping. CBS/Paramount need to get back into the fans' good graces, and if ST:D doesn't do it then we will see a lapse in Trek for years to come. Which might be what it needs. Trek took a rest for over a decade between TOS and TMP and came back strong.- 466 replies

At the same time it could be that she turned bad again, or died upon their return. Also, the lack of Gordon even being mentioned is interesting. Unless they announce casting someone as him in future installments I'm going to say he's dead too.

Finally saw this move this weekend with the wife, ultimate edition. I enjoyed it, had some messy plotting at times, but in the ultimate edition everything worked. Looking at what ended up cut for the theatrical edition, I can understand the hate. Almost all of Lex's plotting ended up cut, messing up the whole structure of the narrative. It's still a very Snyder movie, and could have done with a bit more levity. Also, it would have been nice to see Batfleck make the connection of Supes' ID himself. Lex, hate to say this, is the best live action Lex to the movies. Yes, he is too crazy, but at least he isn't a crazy real estate mogul, he's a tech/industrial billionaire like in the comics and 'toons. I loved the 90s toon version of Lex, plotting, ruthless, and working through intermediaries to get things done while keeping his hands clean. I would have liked to have seen that Lex, and it could have been done, they were almost setting that up, all he needed was another puppet or two to pull it off, we saw him being the puppet master, so why not take it that final step? Now, I have a theory of how the Nolanverse Bats could still be Batfleck. Hear me out. Yes, they are different actors, but think of it like how the art style changes in comics, Jim Lee characters don't look like John Romita's. We know from DKR that Bruce is alive, and that Robin replaces him in Gotham. We also see that Robin is dead in BvS. We can assume that the Joker is alive and free after DKR, he goes out and starts forging more of an empire for himself, becoming the Leto Joker in SS, who then kills Robin, leaving Gotham defenseless. This prompts Bruce to come out of hiding, without Selena (for reasons unknown). We'll probably never get a good reason why, but Wayne comes back, and steps up being Batman again too. After many years of batmaning again he's getting burnt out leading to Man of Steal and BvS. This also plays into his line about how many good guys are left (Robin's death), and how many stayed that way (Harvey Dent/Two Face). I'm also not discounting the idea that Leto's Joker could be a twisted/turned Robin. Anyway, just a thought.

Suicide Squad, in theaters Aug. 5, 2016
Knight26 replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Saw it over the weekend, great movie, no, terrible movie, no, Ok movie, yes. There were a lot of good things in the movie, most in the first two acts and the final scenes. Overall though the third act was a bit of a mess, and yes, the main villain was weak. What this movie really is, is just world building. Imagine reading a book: Chapter 1-3, heavy action, focuses on Batman (I have a theory of how the Nolan movies still work with the current DCU) Chapter 4, we get our first real super powered character, Superman, and see how the world reacts. In narrative this is many years (10+) after chapters 1-3. Chapter 5, The batman faces off against Superman, clashes of ideology and groundwork for other meta/supers laid. Chapter 6, this is a world building chapter, we close some plotholes of where Bats was for 10 years (Catching members of SS), see how his nemesis in chapter 2 has changed. Chapter 8, (upcoming) get some backstory on WW, setup for the big reveal/payoff in chapter 9 Chapter 9, (upcoming) we finally get our justice league pay off. This movie doesn't really stand on its own, it is part of a larger whole that the DCU is assembling, and it feels like it. I will say that Leto's Joker still isn't the best in my opinion, Ledger's is still #1, but I can see how the two could be made to be the same character, or the one be the successor to the other.- 242 replies

IOC was declared due to an IRA (Interim Readiness Assessment), basically this clears the aircraft to start dropping munitions on ranges and going to Red Flag. But the plane is still not cleared for full operation.

Knight26 replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'll wait to see what people I know think of it, but based on the reviews it seems pretty meh. I wasn't that interested in it to begin with. Also, I never cared for the fact that the existence of this movie gutted the last season of Arrow, which would have had a much larger Task Force X/Suicide Squad storyline complete with Harley Quin. If WB is going to treat the DCU and WBTV as separate universes then let them be separate universes. What this tells me is that they were afraid that the Arrow SS storyline would be better then the movie, again.- 242 replies

Star Trek Beyond (the not The Search for Spock)
Knight26 replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The movie was enjoyable, far better than Into Darkness with no giant gaping plot holes. The only issues I had with it were minor and nothing that could really ruin the film. The extra screentime for McCoy and Scotty were quite welcome (as they have the two best actors portraying them) and the humor was great. I laughed more at the jokes in this one, in and otherwise, then I did at the Ghostbusters reboot. There were also plenty of nods to Macross in the movie, I counted at least four: I'm sure there may have been more but those four jumped out at me.- 466 replies

Dang!!! Just dang, we've been waiting long enough for this, all of this. This may actually be a better and more satisfying episode then even the Battle of the Bastards. Jon almost needs to marry Lyanna Mormont for that speach.- 539 replies

Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar short film
Knight26 replied to Dobber's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The question fans are asking now is if it is retroactive to in-production fan films as well. That will be the only thing that might save Axanar, Renegades, Phase II, etc... What is really going on here is that Paramount is scared that the higher end fan productions will outshine their movies and TV shows. Paramount should have included a clause regarding permission for longer projects, or projects that use professional crews. By doing that they could monetize the fan film under their label, almost like a Star Wars Infinities thing, the fan film makers could get their costs covered with any profit going to Paramount. The thing I laugh most about with this, is how ST fans said the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm would kill SW fan productions, and now Paramount is killing ST fan films.- 94 replies
