Akai Koudan Zillion & The Acquisition of a Grail
M'Kyuun replied to Valkyrie Hunter D's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It would be so much more wallet (and space) friendly if I could narrow my transforming robot obsession to just a certain type, but I'm pretty equal opportunity in that regard. 😄 Glad for you that you found your niche and that, while not as prolific as other types of transforming toys, it's still fairly well-served across any number of anime and other themes/genres. I didn't see RT growing up; that said, the Ride Armor never appealed to me and still doesn't. Case in point, when I bought the Monogram "Leader One" Legioss kit back in the 80s, they were also selling a Ride Armor kit decoed and marketed as "Cy-Kill". It just didn't strike a chord, and those kits, IIRC, were my introduction to Mospeada designs, although I didn't then know what Mospeada even was. I did, however, have the wherewithal to recognize that they were something other than Gobots designs. That said, the lovely "Leader One" went home with me and all those "Cy-Kill" models remained on the shelf. I will say if the "Cy-kill" model was even halfway as well-done as the "Leader One" kit, then I'm going to assume that it was a cool kit with some impressive features and articulation, especially for the time. For reference: All transformers that were MOTORCYCLES | TFW2005 - The 2005 Boards Some other notable Transformers bikes are TFA Oil Slick, an amazing figure with a lot of character; Combiner Wars Groove (a superior repaint of Takara's TAV-26 Override); 2009 Knock-Out whose bike mode is excellent while the bot mode sports a bit of annoying kibble, especially on the legs; 2014 Generations Chromia, a retool of the regular deluxe Prime Arcee mold; the excellent First Edition Prime Arcee; 2010's Hunt for the Decepticons Brimstone, whose classic bike mode is fantastic at the expense of his gangly, awkward looking bot mode; Energon Arcee, who was the very first official Arcee toy made by Hasbro and whose bike mode presents very well again at the expense of her bot mode; 2011 DotM Tailpipe, whose bike mode is interesting for its secondary flying attack mode. Again, the bot mode suffers a little but given the core-class size of many of these older transforming bike figs, the execution of the bot modes is often forgivable for how well the bike modes are. Wish the same could be said for their jetformers. Other notable bike dudes are the 2011 Reveal the Shield Wreck-Gar whose dirt bike alt mode is gorgeous, one of the most realistic and unique bike modes Takara/Hasbro have ever released. The bot mode was pretty good, too, although on my copy, the rivet on the right handlebar assembly was so tight that it broke the entire mount off and I had to superglue it back on. I don't think I've transformed it since. Love the look of it in both modes, though. And finally, SS86 Wreck-Gar and his Junkion repaint/retools, whose stylized bike modes and abilities to be ridden by their fellow Junkions (and other TFs), as seen in the '86 Movie, make them fun, cool, and interesting toys. The bike modes are pretty solid, too, which is always a good thing. We've definitely veered off topic, and perhaps general transforming bikes are due their own thread. Anyway, I thought the Unrrustables were interesting designs although I never bought any. I prefer the G1 design for Afterburner over the Unite Warriors toy (I dig that funky 'futuristic' look to the OG's bike mode), and that Diaclone Tri-Rambler gives me huge Cy-kill/ Bike Robo vibes. Concerning the Ride Armor, I think my biggest beef with it is that it's more of a folding bike whose various bits form some armor for the rider. It's not a mecha in the truest sense, not like the Motoslave, which can function autonomously without the rider, or the Garland variants which are true mecha designs. That distinction, plus the fact that it's not really a great looking motorcycle, just turn me off to it. Now if it was more like the Motoslave, a complete armor sans driver, I'd be more receptive. That said, for those who like it, I'm glad they're being served with modern versions. back on topic, as to transforming trikes, honestly, I wasn't really aware of any until this thread. The Tri-Charger is interesting, if only for its rarity amidst the transforming bike genre, but I'm finding its overall execution to be much less refined than designs like the lovely Garland. I'm glad that Pose+ is making it for fans of Zillion, but it's an easy pass for me. -
One example that shows up four times in what you've posted there is "New United Nations". That's not correct to the text of the novel or the official terminology of the setting. I know that's what's in the Disney+ subtitles, but they're demonstrably incorrect in this and several other areas. "New United Nations Forces" would be 新国際連合軍 (Shin kokusai rengou-gun). That's not what's in the book or in the animation. What's in the text of the book and in the animation is 新統合軍 (Shin tougou-gun), the official/correct translations of which are "New Unification Forces" or "New Unity Forces". The name of the government in the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross is 地球統合政府 (Chikyuu tougou seifu) and its military is the 地球統合軍 (Chikyuu tougou-gun). The Earth Unification Government and Earth Unification Forces. Animeigo used "Unity" instead of "Unification", but both are equally acceptable correct translations. This distinction matters because the modern United Nations (国際連合 Kokusai rengou) is a separate entity from the Earth Unification Government in the official Macross setting. It drafted the framework for the Earth Unification Government in 1999-2000 and briefly served as a transitional world government before the Earth Unification Government was ready to officially assume power at the start of 2001. It effectively ceased to exist when the Earth Unification Government started. There hasn't been a United Nations for 57 years at this point. The government that replaced the Earth Unification Government (地球統合政府 Chikyuu tougou seifu) after the First Space War is the New Unification Government (新統合政府 Shin tougou seifu). Its armed forces are the aforementioned New Unification Forces (新統合軍 Shin tougou-gun). Another one that's based on a common misconception is translating 小隊 as "Squadron". That's actually officially translated as "Platoon" and has been used as such in a bunch of official Japanese merch. It's a much smaller formation... a subunit of a squadron made up of 3-4 planes. Probably best not to confuse those two. It looks like the ranks are also translated incorrectly. Official Macross translations, onscreen in-series text, and katakana transliterations throughout the franchise use Army/Air Force ranks for Space Forces characters. The Japanese terminology is interchangeable between Army and Navy, but they've made a point to consistently translate it using the Army ranks for in-series English text, official media, and goods for decades. (This is a bit of truth in television as real world space forces are typically under the Air Force, which Stargate inexplicably got correct but almost nobody else did! Yes, the Spacy is not a Space Navy, it's a Space Army or Space Force etymologically.) Chelsea's correct rank is given as 中尉 (Chuui), she's a First Lieutenant. Just "Lieutenant" is one paygrade higher and in the Navy rank system, equivalent to the rank of Captain (大尉 Taii) in the Army/Air Force style system Macross uses. There's also a moment where the phrase "gun encampment" is used... the correct term would be "gun emplacement".

I'm sure the eagle-eyed among you noticed a certain fellow in that Season 3 picture, so let's talk repaints. First up, yes, we have the Walmart-exclusive Retro Outback. The nice thing about Outback is that a toy-style figure is also a cartoon-style one, as unlike Brawn his animation model is much closer to his toy. That being said, Brawn's toy is based on his cartoon appearance, and while it makes sense that Outback would be a retool of Brawn (since the G1 toy was a retool of Brawn's), it actually leaves the Retro toy less accurate, as he's missing the weird proportions, shoulder windows, and skinny wheeled legs he was animated with. Oh well. He does, at least, have a brand new head and chest. He also has a new gun, which matches the G1 toy (which I believe was the only G1 minibot to come with a gun in the first place). The only remolded parts you see in alt mode is the gun, mounted on the tire just like the G1 toy. Like the G1 toy, the center of the hood is black with the Mysterion "M", as is the windshield, and the rear windows aren't painted at all, simply tampoed with the Autobot symbol. The front side windows are painted, though, which doesn't match the toy but does match the animation model. Look, as near as I can tell Outback appeared in a grand total of two out of the ninety-eight episodes of the G1 cartoon. Would it have been cool if Outback was more extensively retooled to better match the G1 toy/animation model? Sure. But I didn't expect them to, and frankly Brawn in different colors with a new head and chest is honestly good enough for me, and probably good enough for you guys to pick up and check off your list. He gets a recommend from me. But Outback isn't the only recent repaint in my collection. I also got the new 2-pack of G2 Dinobots. That pack includes Swoop here, packing the same wing rockets and same pair of swords as the G1 toy (which technically means you're getting a sword for G2 Grimlock with this set!). Swoop isn't just sporting some EXTREME new colors (which I happen to LOVE, by the way). He's got a remolded noggin, swapping the caveman-browed cartoon face for a visored look closer to the G1 toy (which makes sense, since the original canceled G2 toy would have been the G1 toy but EXTREME). Now, I think most of the the other SS86 Dinobots are neatly enough between absolute Sunbow G1 and the G1 toys that I don't really need toy versions of them, but if Hasbro wants to release a red Swoop with this face they could get another easy $60 out of me. As with Outback, none of the remolded parts come through in alt mode. But man, that neon green! Man, I just want to go back to the '90s, watch some Gargoyles, eat some Soda-Liscious, play some SNES, then pump up my Reebok Pumps, go to the mall, and swing by Kay-Bee before hitting the arcade. Maybe we'll hear some Offspring or Green Day in the car on the way over. Needless to say, love G2 Swoop (even if the right wing on mine doesn't like to stay together), and I'd totally recommend him as a standalone, but to get him you also have to buy... ...G2 Sludge. Who gets no remolding at all, just a new coat of paint. Orange is a bright color, but pairing it with black and blue is a bit less EXTREME, I guess. I can't really blame modern Hasbro, though, they're just going by the concept art for the original canceled G2 toy. There's some nice silver paint here, I suppose. I dunno what else to really say... Sludge has always been my least-favorite of the Dinobots, and I think he's arguably the worst-executed of the five SS86 Dinobots (not saying he's bad, just less good than the other four), so it stands to reason I'd be a bit underwhelmed by a straight repaint for G2. But hey, he comes with Swoop, who's like a must-have. And if you're weird like me, you'll want him just because you need him to complete your set of G2 Dinobots. That is, assuming he does actually complete your G2 Dinobots. Because when we're talking about G2 Dinobots, we're not talking about one set of five Dinobots, are we? We're actually talking about two sets of three. One set is Grimlock, Slag, and Snarl, who have traded in their silver parts for blue, green, and red, respectively. They're part of that early G2 stuff, where you were mostly getting G1 toys with slightly altered decos. But on the other hand, you have another Grimlock, Swoop, and Sludge, based on canceled decos for later in G2 when G2 was all about EXTREME '90s colors. So maybe for you, three G2 Dinobots is enough. Maybe you don't need this set. But I happen to like both! If I'm being honest, I like tiger stripe Grimlock better than blue Grimlock, and green-and-blue Swoop better than Slag and Snarl's G2 decos (though Slag and Snarl beat Islanders-fan Sludge). So yeah, indulge yourself!- 18283 replies

It’s unfortunate that you just can’t trust the news in general these days and then the coolest news comes up on April fools. I saw a cool looking ad for cheddar bay pop tarts and thoug I knew it was a joke, my mouth was watering

I think the greatest prank was the one that the ground crew somehow pulled off for April fools by temporarily disabling the toilet, but this would be a close second -

That would be one of the greatest pranks of all time. Love that picture, I miss hiking at Malibu Creek. -
What spots are you talking about with terminology and romanizations? I edited all of this and we were constantly checking the Mecha Manual, here, and the official subtitles (Vhirler, as strange as it may seem, /is/ official). We can fix 'em for next chapter and for the eventual batch release. Some stuff like "Zentra", "Fold Course" and air traffic controller were explicitly written out in katakana, so we didn't want to mess with it too much.

For a "cheap and cheerful" translation, this came out better than I'd expected. It has some rough spots, a fair amount of evident trouble with terminology and few romanizations, but the flow of the prose was preserved pretty well and that's what matters most. Well... yes and no? It's relative? Kind of a double-edged sword if you'll forgive the pun? In practical terms, the VF-19EF Caliburn has higher performance than the New UN Forces VF-171 Nightmare Plus that will be the main fighter of the New UN Forces into the next decade but it's actually less capable/powerful than a "normal" VF-19. Macross the Ride describes it using an old Cold War-era term: it calls it a "Monkey model". That term has a very specific meaning. Namely, an export variant of a piece of military hardware that has significantly reduced capabilities compared to the standard version. Earth restricted its arms exports after the events of Macross Plus and so the Frontier fleet had to both fill in some gaps in its specs with their own tech and apply limiters to some of its hardware to reduce its performance enough for legal production. Even then it's still kind of stuck as a small batch Special Forces VF because it's very expensive and its performance is still more than the average pilot can handle.

The "Erdspinne" grunts definitely should've been alot darker that I kinda question Takara's Toyrise-mindset a bit since all their previous Votoms lines all have had anime-correct colors. Which then brings me to this, uhh, abomination: What and why the ever-mudder-f*ck is that hideously pink coloring??? Titania's Erdspinne was quite a nice light/drab purple yam in the Alone Again ova: Hopefully that's not the final product and that Takara regain their proper coloring-sense again before release... /facepalm add/edit: btw, here's the official Takara page for it: https://takaratomymall.jp/shop/g/g4904810082736/

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Seto Kaiba replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Starting the first of this season's new series... Always a Catch! It seems we're once again generously oversupplied with otome anime. The now-standard opening of "The prince broke off his engagement to the protagonist and now she has to find a new fiance" thing is getting kind of weird. You have to wonder if any of the authors who use this almost form letter opening ever stop to consider that having the prince of a kingdom arbitrarily dump a girl who is usually the daughter and heir of a Duke powerful enough to arrange for his daughter to marry into the royal family ought to have WAY more consequences than just "the girl is upset". Like, this ought to be a massive political faux pas that risks turning a very powerful ally of the king into an enemy if he has any kind of pride at all. Always a Catch! has all the usual staples, though the twist this time around is the protagonist is actually the cousin and best friend of the duke's daughter who gets dumped by the prince. She's an unladylike muscleheaded tomboy who's staying with her cousin to hunt for a fiance of her own because her parents finally had a boy after years of trying and she therefore isn't the family heir anymore. (That her family's coat of arms, and her hairpin, appear to be brass knuckles kind of says all that needs to be said about her.) -
The base is a mix of MR Color 66 bright green and 56 IJN green. 4-1. Then put in some highlights using same color mix with a little white added. Then I sprayed straight IJN green through poly fill to get some random texture areas. In hindsight I think the texture is a bit too heavy handed but I’ll work with it.

Thanks guys! I'm trying to keep it tidy as best I can, but it's an exercise in discipline! 😇 My favorite thing about the set-up is the Adam Savage inspired lights... GAME CHANGER, highly recommended if you're looking for more lighting! @derex3592 I paid someone who knew what they were doing to put my vent in. I'm glad I spent the money (and I'm glad I didn't have to drill a hole in my exterior wall myself) but it weren't cheap🤑 One of the youtubers I watch recommended Lysol all-purpose cleaner for acrylics, and it's worked wonders and smells great once I'm done airbrushing! I'm also glad I did it so I don't have to subject my cat to VOCs when I use solvent-based paint and make her even more 'special' than she already is.😸 @Papa Rat That Plamax is looking real good! What did you use for the green? It looks like a great match for the scheme.

Great topic ... along these lines of bi-axial bliss I became partial to the Transformers Unite Warriors Afterburner (from the red Computron set), Diaclone Tryverse Trirambler (in red), and MM03 Otomo from Unrustables (in red) all as homage to the Garland and Kaneda's bike – mods sorry off topic but we'd have to wait a 'zillion' years for more news on a tri-charger. -
