If you can get them for the right price, these little guys are a lot of fun to mess around with and worth the cost IMHO. You can spend quite a bit more on a nice dinner than what a set of three of these will set you back. Comparisons to any Yamato, or virtually any other VF-1, save maybe Banprestos, are laughable at best - these are not high-buck, high-detail collectibles, they are nifty little toys that you can abuse without having cardiac arrest or brain hemorrhage in the event that one breaks. In that role, they excel. The joints on series 2 seem to be a little tighter than the last batch (or that may just be because they are fresh out of the box), the paint jobs are quite nice, and they do not have any of the silly raised skulls on the heatshields. For this reason, along with the nice paint, they really look better in Battroid mode than the first series does. I'd take some pics, but don't have a camera handy at the mo. Since my wife had our daughter I have only recently been allowed around paints. Next month it will be rubber molds and resin casts. Life and it's little compromises. ------------------------------------------------------------- For the Super/Strike Packs I'm going with the Bandai 1/100 VF-1D Super Valkyrie. It comes with the Super parts along with a different set of Strike parts. The level of detail on the Strike parts are much better than the counter parts. Not to say that the joints were crappy on the previous set, they're just not near as good as these ones are. The blue and red coloring on Max and Milia is really nice. The VF-1J heads are on that same type of neck as the VF-1S. Its ok, but like the VF-1S its all just a bit too narrow. Anyway, I'm a little new to Macross. I wasn't aware that Max, Milia and Hikaru had numbered VF-1J's. The instructions say who has what number, but they don't point to where to apply them. I figured I'd put Hikaru's on the side of the nose under the cockpit like I did with the numbers in the last series. The problem is that Max and Milia's numbering is white and that part of the nose is white, so it would be pointless to put a white sticker on a white background. Are these supposed to be numbered anyway? If so, where? Edit: Oops, forgot that I wanted to say that I'm happy that toynami fixed the display cup in the second series. I've had mine on display, in a swooping jet mode pose no less, for over a week and no cracking! Thanks for the info. Yeah, it's the best price I've seen so far around here, but I think I'll wait 'till I can buy one at US retailer price and hold it in my hands before considering on buying sets. The common impression around these boards is that they worth what they cost and not a cent more, and only if Toynami keeps their promise of expanding the 1/100 line (which seems to be doubtful, and we are talking only about FP's. Thanks! Still brush painting them and not disassembling them. I'm not heavy into the customization or model painting, so i don't have an airbrush. It's all about layering and applying paint liberally. Thankfully I also have a small enough brush to get under those nooks and crannies. These things are so small too, I figure the minuet detail of the strokes wouldn't be as noticeable as on a 1/48. jodokast Posted January 4, 2007 Share Posted January 4, 2007 (edited) Interestingly enough, both the 1s and 1j have the exact same neck size. The 1s just has an elongated chin so it hides the neck. If the 1j had the same neck base as the 1a it would have definitely been a lot less fugly. I guess toynami just took the 1s mold and plopped a new head on it along w/ packaging and new heat shield. However, I just got my VF-1J, and it's an awesome little toy. With this series the quality seems greatly improved - all the joints are very tight, and nothing falls off. If you're looking for a cartoony valk that you can have fun with, this is your guy. And the neck isn't that noticeable if you tilt his head a bit. I think this line of toys has surpassed Takara's Actic Gear line in terms of quality, although it's not quite up to the level of HCM Pro. It's really only bad from a straight-on view, which, due to the size of the figure, is not really a big deal. Shift your view a couple of degrees up or down, and it's a non-issue (kind of like the sides of a Yammie 1/48 ). The 1Js look great in gerwalk mode IMHO, but the fighter modes kind of uniformly suck across the 1/100 range, if you ask me, which you didn't I'll try to bring home a camera so I can get some more complimentary shots posted soon. It's a Macross toy on the cheap and not a half bad one. If I weren't at work 13 hours a day right now I think I would have totally bought these by now. There's something cool about a toy you can handle and not worry at all about the huge expense you'll incur should you accidentally break it... which is kind of the spirit of what a toy should be right? Once I breed successfully and my children are sufficiently aged I'm pretty sure these little buggers will be their indoctrination to Macross (I better have locking cabinets by then). I hate the long necks, but they look OK if you tilt the head a bit or as long as you're not looking at them straight-on. The joints seem much tighter on these than series 1. The first series wasn't what I would call floppy, but noticeably looser than series 2. But I remember playing with my transformers as a kid and so at that point in development I think a kid could do fine with these. Knowing most children the missiles will never be on the plane and the heatshield will never get swapped anyway. I'll probably end up getting just one of these, just to have one in that scale, but I'm gonna stick with the big boy toys as far as collecting. By the by, I ordered my second series from Kevin (aka Valk Exchange) at a great price. I'll be putting up a review for them on my website in the coming month. I'm too busy to promise anything sooner though. I still have to get through the Yamato launch arms, 1/60 VF-0S, and some vintage toys first...
