The producers of the new Yamato space opera anime project have confirmed their plans for a theatrical release this year at the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2009 on Wednesday. The project was first revealed last August when Yoshinobu Nishizaki, the producer of the original Space Battleship Yamato series and movies, announced the creation of the "Yamato Studio" in Tokyo.

Nishizaki's new project is set in 2220, or 21 years after the first Yamato story. An expanding black hole threatens Earth, so three hundred million people set forth into space as part of an emigration operation. The transport fleet is attacked, and the Yamato leads the counterstrike. 38-year-old Susumu Kodai, the hero of the first series, is now a space captain with a daughter named Miyuki with his wife Yuki (the heroine of the first series).

For a fan since the 80's, that is a beautiful sight. Thanks SOOOOOO much for that news, made my day.

I take it that this means that there must have been some sort of resolution on the rights issue, anybody know whats going on there?

Can't wait!

Except that Nishizaki is a freaking loon, and can't produce anything entertaining to save his life. If Leiji Matsumoto was involved, I'd be much more optimistic, but Nishizaki on his own can do little more than boring character slaughter fests (I'm looking at you Odin).

My eyes bugged open about a New YAMATO movie, then I read your post Keith about who's in charge.... Bummer.

I think that Nishizaki AND Leiji Matsumoto are both off their heads in their own unique ways, thats why their combo worked with Yamato......

I'm going to want to know just how they're going to fish the two halves of Yamato from the bottom of the ocean.

Can't keep a good ship down.....

"People on internet forums always seem to be labouring under the misconception that there are rules for them to find loopholes in. There aren't. If you annoy the people who run the forum, they deal with you, and your cries of "noooo, oppression!" are like music to their ears. Funky music, on a porn soundtrack, with women panting "yes, yes!" in the background."

A bit X-rated, but true.

A prime example would be Arrividerci Yamato VS Yamato 2. The aforementioned movie (lead by Nishizaki) managed to do little more than kill off the entire crew, while doing little for much else. While Yamato 2 (this time with Matsumoto reigning things in) still had its share of death, but flowed a lot better (and not just because of the extended time of the story), and worked a whole lot better.

Over the years since Matsumoto has had Galaxy Express TV & Movies, the various Harlock shows, movies OVA's, The Cockpit, and most recently Galaxy Railways. I'm not saying everything he's done has been absolute gold, but you can see the spirit in all that was good with Yamato in his work. Nishizaki on the other hand only had Odin & the failed Yamato 2520 (before going to jail for owning firearms), those works doing little lmore than treading too closely over what was already done, while retaining little of the actual spirit of what made Yamato great.

Wow...you actually brought up Yamato 2520? I thought the staff had gone back in time and erased it from existence...

I might possibly still have a VHS tape of the first episode somewhere, though...

What was wrong with 2520? Never got the chance to see it but would love too even if it sucks.

I actually remember nothing about it, except that the opening scene had some kid on a hover skateboard. I think I saw it in...1995? 1996? Somewhere around there...

Anyway, they made a prelude video which (I believe) provided the background for the new series, and the series itself was supposed to be (again, IIRC) seven or so episodes long, but they only ended up releasing the first two or three before the project was abandoned. The Syd Mead -designed Yamato didn't look bad though, let me see if I can scrounge up an image somewhere...

(One Google search and Strawberry Tart Without So Much Rat in It later...)

Here we are...not the best pic, but I guess it'll do:

  • 2 months later...

I hate to be the continued wet blanket, and I know I've bitched about Nishizaki quite a bit already, but damn:

-All Earth ships besides the Yamato are ass

-Blue Noah should be reserved for Nadia!

-Cosmo Panthers look a little too loaded down with wing missiles

-Character designs are ass

-Alien ship designs are ass

-WHY COULDN'T YOU HAVE JUST MADE UP WITH MATSUMOTO TO MAKE THE PERFECT YAMATO!!

With that said, I do hope this isn't anywhere near as borring as Odin, and that Nishizaki has finally learned to "not" kill off his entire cast for no reason. Also, where's the Yuki /female type character? Is that supposed to be Kodai captaining? Is that the Yamato re-launching from frozen remains of Aquarious? Does Matsumoto own the Andromeda design? Because if he doesn't, for shame on Nishizaki for not using the most beautiful ship design ever.

Other minor complaints, cannon blasts should be "bigger," they look too thin and not flashy enough. The Wave Motion Gun barrel should also be bigger/wider on the hull. And really, the Earth fleet looks like something out of Legend of Galactic Heroes, a great series, but the ship designs leave a lot to be desired.

With that said, and for all my complaining, I will watch/buy this if it ever becomes available in the U.S., but I'd much prefer the second season of Galaxy Railways. for anyone who hasn't, check out the first season, it's dirt cheap from Funi, and some of Matsumoto's best work.

Lets all hope that this revival is more successful than Nishizaki's last effort.

Was he also involved with Great Yamato?

No, Dai Ginga Yamato (Zero?) was Matsumoto's blunder, though he apparently didn't have much budget to work with on that. The Upside, he did make up for it with Herlock Endless Odyssey, & Galaxy Railways.

So...this isn't just a movie is it? I mean, sounds like it's debuting with a movie appearing in theatres, but the animation quality does not at all strike me as movie quality. It's not bad, but the character designs are really bland, little to no shading, little to no motion. The CG is...well...it's not bad. I guess. The battle scene at the end of the trailer was fantastic, but everything else was kinda meh. The ship designs are very bland. The huge fleet shots shoulda been awesome, I'm a sucker for those, but just felt flat.

I just rewatched Endless Odyssey with a friend who'd never seen it, that was absolutely brilliant.

Though the anime & CGI look impressive, 1st off that is one hell of long preview!!

I'm willing to give this one a chance, could be fun. I would have liked to see a bit more of an update on the crews uniforms and pilots. The Fighters looked like their competing with the missile loads of a VF-25 and I swear for a moment those Cosmo panthers looked like the VF-2SS cockpit of MAC II.

Since theres no translation is this a story in the future or is this like the new BSG, an update of the original series?

You make it sound like Matsumoto was the director.

I challenge anybody who was a fan of the original series not to get a shiver down their spine or have the hairs on the back of their neck standing up when the Yamato blasted out of the ice.

Sure, the CGI was not particularly fantastic, but the Yamato still looked great. Loved the way it took off like a roaring rocket. Fantastic stuff as it hurtled across the ice. (I don't think that the ship has ever been animated before to look like it was moving so quickly)

I don't think that this will be a remake of the original. The narrator (who sounded a lot like the old Mayan dude from Macross Zero, anybody confirm that) kept mentioning "Black Hole" so I think its a new enemy.

As far as I know the black hole is about to blow earth, so all the big ships are something like scape vessels

Although I kinda wish they'd leave Yamato well enough alone, I have to say I started grinning like a stupid kid as soon as they showed the Yamato's bridge, and yes...when it launched I felt a little thrill down my back.

Not sure I like the character designs, but the space battle looked pretty cool.

I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about it...I'll have to find out the running time to really be sure, though (theatrical Yamato movies should run AT LEAST two hours and fifteen minutes. Longer, if possible).

So is this version of Yamato going to be a new original version of the show?

No, according to an article on Anime News Network, the new Yamato movie takes place 17 years after Final Yamato. From the way the article is worded, it sounds like this Yamato is actually a new ship.

Yamato, like a lot of shows such as Macross, does have a fairly loose set of rules that have to be followed if you want to make a show that is a recognisable part of the franchise. An appearance by Desler (my favourite character), is compulsory, the Yamato really having the sh!t kicked out of it in a battle is compulsory too. Anybody else care to add some elements to this list?

I too am not particularly fond of the character designs, but at least the Yamato design was true, and not one with very silly wings (the original wings were cool) and an Enterprise disk sticking out halfway down the hall.

Yuki's Panties, an uber powerful mystical space babe, Analyzer completely falling apart, and sweet sunglasses to shade from the Wave Motion Gun.

In lieau of all of these, I think we'll only get the gruesome crew deaths. Seriously, was i necessary to kill Shima? Also, if it's only 17 years in hte future,k where the hell is Sanada!

That's nice to hear.

I saw the first two series way back in the seventies when it was released as Starblazers.

It wasn't until later that I found out that it was created by the same guy who came up with Captain Harlock.

I have a question, I know the first series dealt with the Argo (Starblazers referance here) was charged with the mission to deliver a cure to a disease to Earth (I was suprised when I saw the captian was afflicted with the disease). Is season 2 the story of what happens after the cure was delivered to Earth?

Future. In fact it's supposed to take place 17 years after the last movie "Final Yamato".

But I bet it won't seamlessly connect to the original series and it'll end up being something like an alternate future.

I believe Sanada Shiro is already confirmed to appear in this movie.

In anycase, I'm excited about this new Yamato movie. I hope it leads to a new wave of Yamato toys and models.
