DeeBot
I just rewatched the episode the 3rd time (with gg's sub), I must say I am quite impressed with Capt Wilder, he did not even flinch one bit, when the Vajra's beam was heading towards the bridge. He has nerves of steel ! He's an old man, gotta make allowances.
Shaka_Z
indeed... lots of good character development this ep. especially regarding ozma/cathy and even the small bit with michel/klan, although I was quite surprised that sheryl didnt appear until the end - I fully expected her to have had a bout of illness while still on the bridge, landing her in carnalia's care. the fact that she didnt suggest to me that we might be in for a longer run of frontier than originally expected... if they are going to wrap this up in 10 more eps or less, things have *got* to speed up a great deal from here, and I dont see that happening at this point (the next ep preview looks to be paced about the same as this one, with heavy focus on the secondaries and the sheryl (instead of Ranka) side of the triangle. Also, if we get a *true* new OP for 18, it would be indicative of being the actual halfway point, so a run of 36 eps is possible. o yeah... Cathy has it in spades... looks like her engagement isnt gonna last much longer ^^ Edited August 2, 2008 by Shaka_Z

Macross 7 factors heavily & that 'Pineapple Salad' curse thingies ..... When Cathy got that 'Pineapple Salad' vibe, I kinda expect Ozma to bitten the dust ..... buta alas, true to form, a heavy fixation on Fire Bomber song dosage can cure fatal wounds that actually has killed atleast one famed Skull leader. the_foul_fowl
To me, this was one of the best episodes so far. Pacing was excellent, plot and character development was good and while I've not watched M7, I thought the feel of the music fitted the scenes perfectly! Of course, lotsa death flags everywhere (pineapple cake anyone?), even non-Macross homage ones, like the lingering shots of Ozma, or reminiscing on the past, a sure death flag for many anime characters! Haha, felt ol' Kawamori and gang must have had a blast with all the misdirection in the ep, and agreed that Ozma's last line about not dying was a real wink-wink to the fans by the staff, i mean, Ozma was looking directly at us! hahaha.... 'new' OP is cute! but I miss the mecha porn. I guess this is just for this ep, till the actual OP (Lion?) appears next week?

I agree completely. You know, I'm all for killing characters when it's for the sake of emotional impact and strong story telling, but if it had actually happened this episode I would have groaned. Well, after crying many manly tears, sure, but still...from a story telling perspective, it was just too heavy handed, which made the misdirection all the better. Such a great use of a Macross reference, while at the same time further pushing Frontier in its own new direction. I still kinda expect we'll see characters die before the end. Possibly even Ozma. But if it happens, I expect it won't be nearly as overwrought as in this episode. They might even make it a completely unexpected shocker. An out of nowhere shot, and suddenly they're gone. Also, thumbs up for all the Fire Bomber this episode. Best episode? I dunno, but the pacing and everything was a lot stronger than usual. Like everything is in the right groove now, and the story is pushing on towards the big revelations. I can't wait to see what next episode brings. Did he end up with Mylene or her older giant sister Emilia? Or did Mylene picked Gamlin? This episode at least tells us there is still a strong following for Fire Bomber! I don't know about strong. Ozma would have been a teenager most likely during the events of M7 which makes him more likely to have been a Bomba fan as it was the music of his generation, whereas Sheryl and Ranka are the music of the 2059 generation. In the scene where Ozma goes close combat with the Vajra (still waiting for a gif from there btw, killed the lobster with it's own leg) and a Fire Bomber song starts playing (I don't know exactly which one that is, I've only listened to the songs from Let Fire) I think he is actually playing the song instead of it just being background music because Michael and Alto comment on it before they start attacking with knives. What Michael and Alto say is something like: Michael: "Rock, huh?" Alto: "No, it's a Folk oldie." Of course this implied Alto and possibly other people in the 2059 generation see Fire Bomber as nothing more than a old Folk band... how sad. Don't get my wrong I don't like Basara much but the band is pretty good, at least the guy can sing. And to keep up the trend... BOMBAA! "Folk" isn't a good translation for that line...Alto said "Enka," which is what the Zentradi singer at the entrance to the Folmo mall was singing in episode 5. It's cheesy and old-fashioned, but it can be loud and raucous, too. I'm not sure they were referring to "Try Again" (the Fire Bomber song playing over that scene), because although Alto's pretty dense, he's not quite dense enough to confuse Fire Bomber with enka...at least, I don't THINK he's that dense. creamyhorror
i don't know whats worse, the sheer arrogance of who ever at gg Fansubs made the "sex with ranka" comment or the fact that they can't even manage to get the subtitles to stop overlapping. You should not be using VLC to watch fansubs, because it doesn't handle soft subtitles right. One good player to use is Media Player Classic, which comes in the Combined Community Codec Pack (www.cccp-project.net). We certainly know how to make a fansub properly, and we wouldn't actually make comments visible in subtitles because that is just not cool. BOMBAA! (By the way...I haven't seen the gg fansubs version...what's the "Sex with Ranka" comment? Do I want to know?) As noted above, it's not meant to be seen. Why are fansubs taking so long? ....and no I don't like gg's work. If you have some particular criticism of our work on Frontier, I honestly hope you'll state it. Considering that Chihiro/Kei is a rough speedsub translated from Chinese subs, I would find it a bit boggling if you actually prefer them for, say, translation quality or editing. "Folk" isn't a good translation for that line...Alto said "Enka," which is what the Zentradi singer at the entrance to the Folmo mall was singing in episode 5. It's cheesy and old-fashioned, but it can be loud and raucous, too. I was deciding between "enka" and "folk oldie" for this line. I went with "folk oldie" because it comes close to being a cultural analog of enka, and as far as I could tell, the reason Alto said "enka" was that Ozma's heroic lines were in that vein (proclaiming that he wouldn't be a man if he couldn't protect his women), and that would also be something you'd expect in a folk oldie (possibly). You think I should've said "folk western" or "country", or just gone with enka? I have to apologize for the slightly wonky phrasing on some lines in our release this episode. Most of our QC team was missing (including me), etc. <excuses>. I'll go through the script later today and see if it needs enough reworking to justify a patch. I don't think it's so much that people are dismissing Fire Bomber as nothing more than an old and forgotten band, but more like that they're simply... old. We have to consider that by the time of macross F, Fire Bomber is already around 19 years old. That's an eternity in music years. Granted, they're already legend status, but they still haven't been active in the music biz for a long time (i presume, unless Basara and Mylene came back for a reunion thing).Compare it to our timeline, where Britney Spears (sheryl) and Myley Cyrus (Ranka) rules the airwaves, once upon a time, Bon Jovi (Fire Bomber) was king. Look further, and you still have the Beatles or Elvis (Minmei). Old-school, but definitely legends in their own right. but you can't blame someone for saying "Yech, Bon Jovi? isn't that a bit too old?" (like a bridge bunny told Bobby). * the analogies are only examples to make a point. no reactions needed. hehe.

So the song wasn't actually playing in the episode (as in it was only BGM)? That would make that dialogue make more sense, I don't quite understand how what Michael and Alto saying those things is referring to what Ozma said, but if they were referring to a song he was playing that would make sense to me. Whatever translation works for me, I just am confused about what they were talking about now.

I believe Alto was just referring to Ozma's lines, which sounded like they came out of an oldie. Master Dex
I know Fire Bomber isn't enka. I figured Alto was just ignorant about the music though. That makes sense but I don't get why Michael says "Rock, huh?" That doesn't sound like something you say about heroic dialogue. Besides that though it makes sense. In another subject, still formally requesting animated gif from episode 17 when Ozma takes out a red Vajra with it's own arm. Depending on how much you can get in, the most I'd like is when he first stabs it then shoots it with lasers and then throws the arm at it resulting in the explosion of which he sits heroically in front. However if only a part of that can be made because it is too big then I'd at least like the throwing arm at the Vajra and the explosion bit.
