well...I think BW and SK have already tryed all the formulas on Macross and seen what is best

SDFM = good animation, good music, good story // SUCCESS

DYRL and flashback 2012 = great animation, filled up some gaps left from SDFM // SUCCESS

Macross Plus = mecha porn, meaningless story // PARTIAL SUCCESS

Macross 7 = bad animation, good story gone wrong, aweful characters, terrible music a complete waste of my life // LIMITED ACEPTANCE BY A FEW, JUST A THING OF A MOMENT

Macross Zero = new animation tecniques, new mecha, gone back to old characters and periods, treehuggin ideology a total acid trip gone wrong // PARTIAL SUCCESS, PEOPLE LEFT IN DOUBTS

I think they've seen that their most succesful franchise has been a serious story, quality animation, and good BELIEVABLE characters (no, I don't care about anyone but myself and see everyone die around me but I only play my guitar and do nothing to help the other but wine why are they fighting crap), so they must go in the right direction this time

and please, talented music writer and composer PLEASE!!

all in all, I feel like a kid waiting for X-mas for a big surprise... yeiii!!

Well as long as it's well animated, with constant quality and not nearly as much singing as in Macross 7, I'll be a happy camper.

3-11-07 (8:59PM EDT)---- Latest Macross Animation To Be Announced At Tokyo Anime Fair 2007

Animation production company Satelight will host a Macross 25th Anniversary booth at the Tokyo Anime Fair to be held in 2 weeks in Japan. Plans are to formally announce the new work at the event. ANS was the first English source to break news on the new Macross way back on February 5th, the news was then confirmed by Victor and through a revamp at the official website this past week.

I really hope we don't have to be disappointed. I wish it would have something to give to fans of the original series & dyrl. Not being so optimistic about that though... But gotta hope it'll be an ok series, even if it wouldn't have the same magic as the great old stuff...

They better have the SDF in it "%¤#¤!!!

I don't want to come out as ignorant... but who is this famous Victor?? I see the links in japanese but obviously I don't understand what it says...so who is him?

Victor is the company that produced the music for Macross.

The "Macross Complete" CD collection with Mari Ijima's singing? That was officially released by Victor.

Any macross is better than no new macross....

Unless it's done awfully!

Personally, I'll take a good, decent production every once in a while than atrociously bad shows that embarass the franchise.

To each their own, I'll just say that the enmasse dismisal of the entire hip hop genre is your loss and only speaks to ones own obsolescence for refusing to make the attempt. Like genres of music from ages past with something to say, some are always unwilling to lend attention to anything other than what they know and quick to dismiss hip hop as rubbish. Some of it is rubbish but a lot of it is not. Like jazz, folk and rock, hip hop has in turn become the voice of a generation and has a lot to say about everything in the human experience, just as much as any other musical form.

If Macross uses hip hop in a new production, I certainly won't shy away from it anymore than I would upon hearing it in a film. But if I were a betting man, I'd say the odds of anything but minor hip hop influences appearing in Macross Flyer is low :)

Ah, but don't get me wrong, fellow MW'er. (No offense intended towards your personal music preference)

There's bound to be some good songs from EVERY genre. It's just that hiphop and rap have fallen prey to the overwhelming saturation of vulgar language, which reflects the lack of either effort or intellectual capacity on the part of the author.

Excuse me for placing a strong emphasis on LYRICS, as I do acknowledge some hiphop/rap have great beat and rhythm, but unless I didn't understand English, I simply cannot fully ignore the derogatory vulgarities to enjoy the musical component.

For instance, a lot of people bash Eminem, but I actually think he's got a few songs that had lyrics with meaning. However, the million dollar question is:

Do I (or you) REALLY wanna hear Eminem-style (or 50-cents, insert own list of gangsta rapper) tunes in Macross?

The implication being anyone who likes hip hop doesn't place a strong emphasis of lyrics? Generalizing in the worst way. And I have to say that people like you and me who place value on lyrics are the exception, not the rule. Like I said, perception all depends upon the person. I understand the point you're trying to make, but I don't agree with the way in which you're trying to skew your rationale to make the point. Using the worst examples of hip hop and saying "You don't want this do you?" is no different than using the worst of rock music and saying "I sure hope this crap doesn't make it into Macross." There's no need to fear Cannibal Corpse on the soundtrack to the next Harry Potter film, especially when we all know full well it would never happen :)

I for one would be thrilled if music like, just to throw out an example, "The Roots" appeared in Macross. A tune like "Sacrifice" would be perfect for something fitting the Macross style of storytelling. Good music and good lyrics, a true honor to the hip hop genre.

But as I said, the odds of it happening are slim, so no need to concern oneself.

Niet.

We don't even know the name for the series yet. "Flyer" is still a point of debate whether its referring to the advertisement or the name of the series. Could be either.

I'd just like to add a couple quick notes on CG. The computers do not magically animate everything all so easily and efficiently as many believe, and motion-capture is a not a magical-super-easy-happy-fun-time-and-sparkles way to do "lifelike" animation.

I never stated that any magic was involved, I pointed out that computers offer more automated animation abilities that manual animation doesn't offer.

Yes, you do only have to build the models once, however once they are built, animating them is more difficult than the average person might expect. It's actually quite difficult, and requires a lot of time and effort. "Realistic" motion capture animation rarely meshes well with CG without some amount of manual editing. When MoCap does work best is with models that themselves are lifelike and meant to interact in lifelike ways, such as CG background characters in a primarily live action film.

I won't comment on Live action films since their budgets and deadlines are much larger and more flexible than TV series or OVA productions.

The ease of lack thereof of animating CG is often based on what software package is being used, Maxon or Maya would have better animation coding that 3DSMax, however you often have to sacrifice something else to get that ability.

I should also point out that CG elements from shows and movies are often not used at a later date. The models/textures/whatnot begin to look outdated next to more contemporary models, and if you want to reuse those old models, you'd also have to limit how good you make the new visual elements. Pixar could not reuse the models from Toy Story in TS2 because there was such a drastic difference in quality despite only being 4 years apart.

AFAIK Pixar didn't have to rebulid the entire meshes for the characters, as much as they re-textured them and added other advanced elements to the animation. Again, motion picture production to OVA/TV is another instance of apples to oranges.

You may wish to recheck your notes, it is cost prohibitive to regularly rebuild models for TV production. Re-texturing is common but a TV producer is not going to spend his SPFX budget on re-inventing the wheel when all it needs is a bit of new paint. If the digital FX department built a poor model to begin with they won't be in the business for very long.

"Labor" is not soley the number of names in the credits, it's also the amount of time those people had to work on a given project.

Very true, however you take the number of hours worked on a project and multiply that by number of people working on a project and the costs add up very fast. ;)

The reality is that 3D animation is cheaper than traditional otherwise why would animation houses even bother with it if there wasn't a cost benefit. Similar to how the grunt work of animation has been exported to Korea for cost savings, the argument for using CG over manual animation must be similar. Otherwise the 2D animation series' would benefit from higher profits and thus be much more attractive to producers and the only time CG would be seen would be in motion pictures where the budgets can accomodate it.

My basic point is simply that CG has to be cost effective (if done right) otherwise it isn't profitable and therefore not worth the effort to employ it in anime.
