  1. Hey MechTec, congrats on the lathe. I have a Sieg baby lathe. I really should have gone all out and purchased a Sherline, they're a great product. I've turned lots of 1/72 items on it, in brass and aluminium. Very fun, but easy to stuff up a bit of work at this scale! The only problem with buying a lathe is that as soon as you do, you realise all the other accessories you'll want to purchase or make, like a ball cutter, taper, etc...
  2. Just look at all those missiles. I can just imagine them all snaking out on the crazy Macross deluxe smoke trails! Of course, I'm a fan of the fighter, but the battroid is certainly growing on me on this one. Can't fault the workmanship, but I've seen you take better stills. But I bet you're just happy this one is over. I know I just love to sit my mechs on the studio desk for a couple of days after finishing and gaze at all the angles and profiles from different directions during idle moments. I do find it helps in appreciating the subject more. Beautiful work!
  3. Like MechTech, I've experimented with under and over with good effect. Decals can vary widely, however, so I advise you to test a smaller one first. I have 'melted' decals this way, so caution is advised.
  4. I few years ago I watched a lot of Akira Kurosawa movies. Recently i've realised that beyond some anime and samurai movies, I have not seen too many other Japanese movies. I saw this list here: http://japanverse.com/2013/03/which-japanese-films-are-a-must-see/ Does anyone have anything else to add, or their own opinions on this list? Most of these movies sound intriguing in their own way.
  5. Well I'm going to go out on limb here and be very clear on the fact that 'Revenge of the Sith' ties for first place as my favourite Star Wars movie, along with 'Empire Strikes Back'. Yes, the prequels were weak, especially the first. But I had a fantastic time with 2 and 3, and I love rewatching them. As for the lightsaber battles I really enjoyed them in the prequels. They were far more entertaining than the ones in the original trilogy - although watching Luke unleash hell on Vader just before he chops his hand of at the end of RotJ showed a nice amount of unrestrained emotion. Old Luke would not need to be involved in any dynamic lightsaber battles. Look what they did for Christopher Lee, for goodness sakes, it was amazing.
  6. I could see Han as an old general or mercantile executive, semi-retired, grumpy and unhappy with his situation in life, whilst his paramour Leia, a travelling diplomat between worlds on the brink of war. Luke of course, would be the wise old teacher. This is a given. I would be pleasantly surprised to see him in another role as Luke Skywalker. Luke as the next Sith lord perhaps? My real fear is that they will pay any attention to the 'expanded universe'. Not really into fanfiction.
  7. I have used the Hasegawa SILVER, GOLD and possibly another couple ( I can't remember which ). They all came with adhesive backing. This backing was difficult to remove since both the backing and the substrate itself is extremely thin. I could only remove it with tweezers a scalpel blade from memory. And the substrate is so thin it wrinkles easily once off the adhesive protection. This is, however, what is awesome about these colour sheet finishes - they conform to detail very nicely over small areas. I'm not sure how useful they would be over large areas although I am considering testing one for an StarWars Naboo fighter with mirror finish. For detailed finishes you can't get any other way, I highly recommend these, they are awesome.
  8. Adding functionality like this increases the cost of product development and deployment. I feel my money can be better spent elsewhere. I would rather have more storage, or more CPU power than development budgets spent on 'Sharing' tech.
  9. Sorry I couldn't resist. But I take your point. This is the single reason I have not completed any of Bandai's kits on this subject. I can't live with the seams that comes from the engineering of the kit. Every so often, I open the box again, assemble a few more pieces, thinking I'm just going to do the basic Ozma. But then I remember the Hasegawa version of the same is imminent, and I sight with relief...
  10. I must admit I do not understand the attraction of watching other people gaming. For me, it's all about the personal experience. I've had my PS3 since launch. It's a beautiful piece of technology, but I was extremely upset by the gradual software updates that took away some of the functionality of the console. One of the things that really annoyed me was that I have a large library of foreign DVDs purchased in the US and elsewhere. I am in Australia, and due to region-locking I cannot play these legitimately purchased disks on my PS3! Region-locking DVD players is now actually illegal in Australia. HOWEVER, Sony get around this by categorising the imported PS3 as a gaming console, and therefore they do not have modify it to comply with Australian laws for DVDs. Now to watch my movie library I have to find a torrent of the same. It's absolutely crazy. I will be watching the PS4 with great interest. But I don't think I will purchase it until it's clear what limitations it will come with.
  11. Diablo 3 for PS4? Suddenly everything about that oh so disappointing game now makes sense....
  12. I've got a couple of the Ikea cases - the work well. They are cheap and look reasonable. I don't like the interior 'cage' though... and the gaps let in too much dust. But you can't argue with the price.
  13. Shapeways gets better and better. Nice work! Is this 1/60 or 1/48 scale, I can't tell.
  14. I must admit, I'm a little underwhelmed. Right now, it reminds me of a 2013 version of Garriot's original Tabula Rasa. And the 'hype reel' they've put out is all that - hype - and not much substance. I'd like to see some actual gameplay. The concept art looks gorgeous, but... doesn't it always? I've been a Bungie fan since Marathon. They have an amazing team. I just hope we see something a little different here...
  15. I have quite a few pin-vises filled with my favourite bits, since I'm too lazy to change them. I also have a Dremel, which I use a lot less, mainly because it's overkill for model kits - although it can be handy (with a steady hand) for resin. The Dremel gets used for all sorts of other non-modeling applications though...
  16. I don't recall Shelob talking in the book. She only ever had an internal thought process, from memory. And did the Wargs ever talk in the books? I didn't think they did. As for Smaug, the conversations between him and the hobbit are iconic and form a central part of the encounter. I can't wait to hear them... but we've got a couple more years, sadly!
  17. Amazing work. What's going on in the background there? We forget how the people who lived through these times remember these subjects....
  18. Is this the same one that was on offer 1-2 years ago?
  19. wm cheng, the Gods of Modelling do not approve of your heresy: shortcuts are looked upon with severe disfavour! To pacify them, I hereby command you to prick your thumb with a craft-knife. For we all well know that no good model is finished without the blood of the builder splashed liberally upon the subject.... Seriously though William, great work, and I look forwards to seeing the final result! I haven't done any modelling for some time, due to work commitments. Maybe this will motivate me!
  20. I don't get it either. A model is for display. Transforming it will destroy all the work you've put into the finish. Exactly! I look forward to it though. Perhaps some elements will be able to be modified for other kits....
  21. JJ is a great director in my opinion. Whether he's 'right' for Star Wars is a different matter though. To date, I've seen him fantastic at emulating other people's work. Star Trek, however, was paving new ground with an existing franchise, and it was quite enjoyable. He will have to bring a totally different aesthetic to Star Wars. I like that he's had plenty of experience with VFX. I look on with interest!
  22. In news that will surprise no one in the industry, THQ is officially dead with the auction of assets today. Relic has been sold off to Sega - WITHOUT the Homeworld IP. Hopefully someone picks it up seperately.
  23. I've done kenjutsu for many years - still a rank amateur though! Practice, application and entertainment are very different things. With fight choreography - you're just going for awesome looking moves. Usually the real sparring session fights I am involved with are over very, very quickly. This does not make for fun movies. I am very happy to watch an extended battle with crazy moves. Although I am 'spoilt' for these a little now. The tassels affixed to jian, and their lightness and flexibility make dance-like moves fun to watch, whereas anytime someone pulls out a katana I expect blood to be spurting within the next few seconds...
