Dengeki Hobby March 2013 First up, it's the 200th issue. Due to that, there's a lot more reader presents available: - signed Dengeki 20th Anniversary VF-19ACTIVE Nothung illustration by Tenjin Hidetaka (only 1 available, IN THE WORLD) - 3 Yamato VF-4 Lightning III. Yes, THREE available as prizes. Alas, no Macross kits got into their top 10 all-time best scratch builds over the past 14 years of publishing, but there was a congratulatory comment from Big West (no Macross pluggage, if you're asking). Macross coverage this month is... underwhelming. Last month's magazine indicated big news... but what we get is: 1.5 pgs on Macross 30 ~ the singing voice that connects the galaxy~ I believe we've seen all the pictures before - though, I can't remember if the VF-19S (blue, diamond force colouring) has been mentioned before. Otherwise, we get 1/3 page tall picts of 6 of the game's original characters (don't remember the scowling grey-haired NUNS special forces commander...) All 3 views of the YF-30 (nothing new. Same ones as have been available everywhere since like last month), along with the model (that I took oodles of pictures of at the M:SDE). Of course they mention that next month's issue will have a commemorative article on the game's release (snore). 0.5 pgs: "Metal Boy" VF-1S MB-23 VF-1S Super Valkyrie about 120 mm tall. 44 parts total ¥12,000 (tax included), advance sales at Feb 10's Wonder Festival. Seller: Metal Box Macross Chronicle Revised Ed. Picts from the the 2nd and 3rd issues. What's interesting is the new rendition of the VF-19 Kai w/ Basara standing in it's open cockpit and YF-19 w/ Super Parts. 1 pg - Bandai 1/72 Perfect Transformation VF-1 Looks like they've refined the CAD designs for fighter and battroid, but no GERWALK picts as yet. They've reused the same temp (test?) fighter/battroid moulds that have been kicking around for the past few months... the blurbs say: next issue will maybe have the reveal of the transformation system, and that a Strike Pack is under development (note that it's the VF-1J version, and the pack blurb suggests a possibility of A and S versions being in the works). 1 pg DX Chougoikin VF-171 Nightmare Plus (standard craft) Really sweet looking. Anyhow, specs: Height: 250 mm Materials: ABS, Diecast, PVC Set contents: the toy itself, gun pod, pilot figure (standard soldier), 3 kinds of exchangeable hands for both the right and left, stand price: ¥14,700 (tax included) planned release from about the middle of April Seller: Bandai Collectors division ... and that's all she wrote. There's some nice pictures accompanying the Yamato 2199 TV broadcast announcement, and they have nice pics of a buildup of the 1/1000 "Great Imperial Garmillas Astro Fleet Garmillas Warships" set.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21144769 Interesting ideas (referring to the article here), I especially like their plan to send out mini-probes piggybacked on rockets used to deliver larger satellites to orbit. Nevertheless, what about the other asteroid mining company that was announced a few months ago? http://www.planetaryresources.com/

You lost it's flavour AFTER the CW series? I lost it way back when they rereleased the DVD version of the rereleased special editions, which are a rerelease of the VHS release of the original verisons. With the BluRay rererelease and the subsequent 3D rererererelease, I felt it justified my opinion that they were just milking things as far as they could go (no, never picked up the rerelease of the DVD release, let alone anything after). Anyhow, I think everyone's hit all the nails about JJ Abrams (keeps you entertained but leaves a bad aftertaste as the plot that doesn't stand up, etc.) expect for: +: he's really good with characters. The highlight (and the only thing that I really remember and want to watch again) of Star Trek is the characters (except for the bad guy. Win some, lose some, I guess). Despite having a bad bad guy (which usually breaks these sort of things), it's still enjoyable to rewatch. Characters are the MAIN reason why Star Wars (original series) was so great and we continued to watch the sequels and the re (ad nauseam) releases. -: tricky, overly dramatic camerawork (never-mind the lens flare). Now Star Wars isn't exactly known for it's camera work (master shots, and alternating between your standard, locked closeups and back to the master), but the camerawork used on Star Trek is way toooooooooo far over the top for Star Wars... ... and the wipes better be retained. It's not Star Wars without the wipe!

Ah, before I forget, you need the following: - time - well lit, well ventilated (if you're using glue and/or paints), flat, level area. - patience (better to take a break when frustrated then try to force things or rush to finish a step) - realistic expectations That last one is probably the most important. We all dream of producing jaw-dropping awesomeness like the kit in Jefuemon's post, but it's extremely unlikely that you're going to do that on the first try. It's probably best to start with a cheap starter kit (one that you can afford to throw away if things go sideways), and start it expecting that it'll end up in a mess. Once you've figured out your ability level, then you can start to expect awesomeness.

That reminds me... Macross Chronicle is EVERYWHERE right now (online). Ads for it are popping up all over the place. DA, JT, even a youtube link in that Top Gun thread: I'm still in the "neat" and "cool" phase, but it's almost at the "too much" phase. Anyone else getting spammed with MC ads?

Apologies. I must've been too giddy that night 'cuz MC was finally out. Heh, and now I have 3 copies. For the binders. The 2 for ¥590 offer, though sounding reasonable, isn't that great. No dividers , and if your purchase is less than ¥1,000, then there's a ¥300 shipping charge tacked on. ¥890 for 2, or ¥580 for 2 + extra dividers and extra copies to let the kids leaf through? That decision didn't take long. Well, you enjoyed yourselves, right? Seeing Macross in the theatre still gives you bragging rights, right? And that's not even considering what happened in the lobby, eh. I've been thinking on it, and I think labelling it an OVA is the publisher's way of shoehorning it into the main chronology - as the movie versions are outside of that. Maybe even Kawamori-san's shoehorning? Nevertheless, translation in process, and the fine print at the bottom left of the article might provide clarification. Or not.

Just noticed some oddness in MC: - on the All Macross Series Guide Line, Macross FB7 is listed as an OVA. Odd!

this is what it's about: Specifically an extra pair of binders, without dividers. too early to tell.

Olympus Has Fallen vs. White House Down
sketchley replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It's not exactly a new phenomenon Volcano (1997)/Dante's Peak (1997) Armageddon (1998)/Deep Impact (1998) Albeit a decade ago it was similar plots. Now it's identical plots. Maybe in another decade, the studios will combine their projects and come up with something actually worthwhile. Maybe. Speaking of Deep Impact, Morgan Freeman was the President. Couldn't he reprise that role?- 22 replies

Ultimately what kind of model kit you intend to work on will define what kit you get for your kit. If it's the HG Gundam kits, then all you really need is a sharp knife. Maybe a pair of tweezers. The ultimate basics are: - modelling glue (there are a lot of choices with different drying times and effects on the plastic, but for - beginners the most commonly available types will suffice) - modelling knife (recommend X-Acto) - fine-point brush (med. etc. are also useful) - modelling paint (at least red, yellow, blue, black & white) - paint thinner after that, everything else in your kit should be readily available in your house or easy to fashion from things in your house (ie water bowls & cotton ear swabs for decals). I've found the following helpful: - nippers (handy tool for cutting parts from sprues, try to get one that has flat, relatively thin cutting blades) - tweezers - oil-based fine nibbed art pen (essentially what a Gundam Marker amounts to without the brand name and it's costs. Apparently a diluted sumi (Japanese calligraphy ink) wash and wipe will have similar effects. Haven't tried it personally... mechanical pencil lead apparently also works, but you've got to seal the model afterwards...) - super glue (Japanese modelling magazines indicate it as a useful alternative when gluing the really small pieces that have small points of contact) A bunch of those basic and helpful tools are in Jefuemon's recommended tool kit, but it may be faster, cheaper and you may ultimately end up with higher quality tools if you don't buy an imported tool kit, and instead visit your local hardware and drug stores for the tools you need, when you need them. I've built a bunch of snap-together Gundam, Macross and Yamato kits over the past few years, and I've rarely used glue, let alone screwdrivers (all of once, if memory serves, and a jewellers kit sufficed). Files (or sand paper in my case), modelling putty and paint? Haven't used any of those.

Series Guide, pgs 01~08: http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRseriesguide/SrsGuid.php Highlights include Kawamori-san's message (more of that frustrating "we're watching the movie version, the real version is something else altogether" carp), things to look forward to (new art), and the filing method.

That's the one thing I never got about those designs - they can't fly, shoot or blow things up... isn't that a step backwards for the Invid? At least the Waltrip brothers tried to rectify things with their black death destroyers version of the Inorganics (or whatever. I can't believe I still remember carp about Rob-tech!). Anyhow, on topic: the only thing coming to mind is a scale puramo of the VF-171 (doesn't have to be transformable). Sure, there's a toy, but puramo are more fun (albeit a Lego line of Valkyries would ROCK).

There's nothing to indicate that they wouldn't be. The only things that have been clarified about their recent activities are: they passed by Earth in 1999, they attempted an ambush on Buritai's ship with a wrecked ship (kinda like an improvised roadside explosive), and the Protodevilun wanted nothing to do with them when they formed the Varohta Forces.

What are your favorite VFs/YFs/VBs/RVFs?

The fine print says "Macross F" and "Macross F ~the False Songstress~", so it might be better to think of it as movie version vs. TV version... -
A lot of the time, the information is given for only one mode, if at all. Maybe one of the toys/model kits for it has the info.

Episode Sheet M01A: "Booby Trap" http://sketchleystats.webatu.com/Trans/MCRepisode/M01Aeps1.php - all of the front except most of the production staff, & topics on the back. I'm going to leave it at that until sometime in the future (probably never). Call it diminishing returns, and energy best spent elsewhere (I've been working on the page for 3 days. Sure, it sounds like a lot, but that's like 10 minutes here and another there. Real life distractions...). That said, the page was more informative than I initially suspected. I really enjoyed the commentary and topics. Definitely two places I'll have my eye on in future issues.

Holly carp is right. Going to refrain from posting anything important until the madness stops. The only good thing is that they're limited to new threads, and not existing threads. Which should make clean up that much easier. Annoying, but easier.
