  1. The Variable Fighter Master File VF-1 Valkyrie Vol. 1 has several pages of orthographics. There are some individual schematics that are a little off, but most of the stuff is good material. Don't know yet about the other two volumes.
  2. Oh, just buy into it. You know you wanna
  3. Oh trust me, I'm right there with ya buddy. "Well I've never prayed but tonight I'm on my knees"...please, no more reprints of the entire series. Please, Hory Froating Head!
  4. Mommar Ah, I didn't know Bandai was the only maker of the Frontier stuff. There's been so many lines of Frontier toys since the 2008 series was released I just assumed it was because a bunch of companies were cashing in on the popularity of the show. And yeah, there's a lot of terrible Frontier toys that came out over the years. Which is why I've avoided buying anything Frontier until now. That VF-25F Messiah ("Renewal", is it?) looks exactly like the kind of Frontier mecha I'd like to buy. Thanks for the link, I may make another purchase because of it, you evil man I don't really choose to buy valkyries based upon the character/pilot and I'm not opposed to buying variants. But understand that for me the original is a big deal. When a new Macross series showcases a new valkyrie, as a mecha fan I dive into exhaustive examination of that craft. This means typically the first iteration of the Valkyrie is the one I'm going to know and fall in love with first. As good as some of the variants can be (and I do like the odd variant better), it's difficult to upstage the original. Once the first version of the VF-1 was released in 1982, every day afterward we were living in a post-VF-1 Valkyrie world and any variant that comes after can never be as fresh as the original. So I lean toward the VF-1J or S as my favorite of the Valkyrie class, the YF-19 for the Exaclibur class and the VF-25F for the Messiah class. I'm sorry to hear the Super Parts and the variants like the VF-25G are so hard to find now. Like I said I am looking at some other stuff like the YF-30 Chronos and even recommendations in this thread like the YF-29 Durandal. But we'll see how it goes. I am treating myself, but I don't want to over-indulge or buy a bunch of toys that I'll regret create so much clutter in my home. Please do share your thoughts on the YF-30 Chronos after release. I'll likely decide to purchase based largely on what you and fans like jenius have to say about it. no3ljm Ah, very interesting. That would make the YF-19 1/60 Arcadia smaller than the 1/48 Vf-1 Yammie in battroid mode, but the YF-19 will be slightly longer in fighter than the Yammie 1/48 fighter. Not bad guesses I'd wager, I suppose I'll find out soon.
  5. As far as I know there is no official canon policy for Macross, neither from the original creators nor the IP owners Big West. At least none I've ever found in any book or interview. It's been explained to me the word "canon" as we use to discuss an intellectual property doesn't exist in the Japanese language. But they do use terms like "official continuity" in some of the Macross books. If there is some form of canon I believe any production art published for the specifical Macross anime series are considered "official continuity". Masahiro Chiba is credited with writing all the mechanical specifications for all the Macross valkyries (though I'm not sure about the "Frontier era") in collaboration with Shoji Kawamori. So anything that publishes his trivia would certainly be considered official continuity for THAT material. Since the Macross Chronicle reprints (and expands upon) much of the established trivia found in all of Chiba's art books for the Macross franchise to date, it's safe to say the Chronicle is official continuity. Some of the other Macross plublications - such as the Master File series - have specific disclaimers that state they are not part of the official continuity. So any trivia from the Master Files that is contradicted by existing trivia is out of luck. Whatever trivia in books like the Master Files that isn't at odds with established trivia could be considered unofficial trivia from an official Macross publication. HOWEVER, the Macross Chronicle has on occassion taken trivia from unofficial sources and adopted that trivia for official status. Recently it was discovered that the Chronicle has used trivia from the old M.A.T. Sky Angels Volume #3: Extra Journal: VF-1 Valkyrie (1984) book to fill out the trivia for certain SDF Macross era mecha. So it appears the Macross Chronicle can "canonize" some trivia from unofficial sources once it's printed within the pages of the series, but that might be assuming too much. I assume no one involved with the Macross productions and puiblications really cares all that much, so I wouldn't expect clarification So yeah, Chronicle is good stuff
  6. Thanks fellas. Good to know. For you Arcadia YF-19 owners, I've been looking at reviews of the craft and I'm really curious as to the size of the fighter and battroid. The toy is advertised at 1/60 scale, so it actually appears as if the fighter is the same size as the VF-1 in 1/48 scale from Yamato, if maybe a centimeter or two difference. Anyone own both and can compare? Also, how tall does the Battroid stand. Again, it seems like it's perhaps about the same size as the 1/48 scale VF-1 Battroid from Yamato.
  7. Stop whatever it is you are doing and make this a priority in your life
  8. I read on Jenius' site the infamous ankle joint problem can be fixed cheaply, so I'm not too worried about it ChaoticYeti I'm not sure why the YF-30 Chronos would be a floppy mess, but I suppose it's possible. You've encountered such a problem with Macross toyus before have you? Keep in mind my experience with Macross toys are limited; I know the old 1/55 chunky monkeys, the original 1/60 and 1/48 scale Yammies, the non-transformable Bandai model kits and lastly the Revoltech figures. Chronocidal Alright, well in that case which Macross Frontier version/company/scale of the VF-25F Messiah would you recommend, since you say the secondary market is asking too much for a VF-25G? Like I said, I know nothing about the many lines of Frontier toys, I just know there are too many of them. I'm looking for a transformable toy of the VF-25F Messiah that has excellent proportions, articulation and quality that is in a similar category to Yamato/Arcadia stuff we've talked about so far. So who makes the best one? What scale is it? How much is it? Any problems I should be aware of or any lines I should avoid? Got a link to any sellers? Let me know what you think. rahvin The YF-29S Durandal sure does look nice. It wasn't a mecha that was on my radar, but I might wait to hear reviews of the YF-30 Chronos before buying it. If I should decide against it, the YF-29S might be a good choice. Mommar Yeah, I'd definitely love to hear your thoughts on the YF-30 Chronos. I like the design, so I'm strongly leaning toward buying. Only thing that will turn me off is if the toy turns out to have serious issues, like ChaoticYeti has said. jenius Thanks for the information. Your website is turning out to be quite the resource. Have you done an Arcadia YF-19 1/60 review yet? i don't see one. I'd be very curious about your thoughts.
  9. I can confidently say Macek's involvement (were he alive) would make zero difference in my attitude toward this kickstarter. Now, I'm not really the type to support hyperbole in calling Macek the oft-labelled antichrist of anime, but honestly the man was nowhere on my radar with regards to anime. I think the closest brush I ever had with him was Vampire Hunter D, which I've been told was distributed in North America by a company in which Macek was involved. I suppose if you're a Robotech fan then Macek's reputation might carry weight and have the pull of nostalgia (kinda what HG is counting on with this kickstarter). From the eyes of a non-fan, I've heard Macek's reputation derided as much as it was praised in the broader anime community. If anime had more noteriety in North America, Macek is what would have been called a "controversial" figure of the industry. So yeah, no difference
  10. Awesome stuff. I wouldn't worry too much about the side-stick "thumb" button; the line art itself is unclear as to the exact position of the thing. The rear drawing shows it resting comfortably at knuckle level. The front drawing gives the impression the button is situated near the palm (which makes one wonder how it would be pressed; unless that's the point, as some kind of "safety" precaution). Digressing, great work!
  11. Mr March

    YF-21 WIP

Sumptuous detail. Loving every bit of this great design.
  12. Agreed. Weapons like missiles and guns would be a great place to start. The gun pods especially since they are some of the most important mechanical designs in the anime, yet tragically undrepresented in any art or 3D modeling. You might also try fold boosters and different things like cannon emplacements.
  13. Wow, that was FAST (pack? *chortle*)! Really appreciate all the great replies. You all did a fantastic job summarizing the issues. This is exactly what I wanted to know. Plus these are some great links to places selling stuff that I've never used before. It means a lot to hear endorsement of these places from other Macross buyers. Also, Jenius' blog website is an amazing resource, so thanks for mentioning it. So yeah, thrilled by the response. You guys are the best! To Kaneda and ChaoticYeti, just so you know I am seriously looking at grabbing the YF-30 Chronos at the end of August. I've also long wanted to purchase a Macross Frontier mecha (have I seen the show?...tsk, tsk, silly Yeti, lol). But there's been so many toys, I wouldn't even know where to start. I'm leaning toward a VF-25F Messiah or a VF-25G Messiah. But let's talk of that in another thread.
  14. I haven't purchased a new Valkyrie toy since my old Yamato 1/48 toys and I'm thinking of purchasing some new stuff. The 1/60 scale YF-19 from Arcadia and the 1/60 scale VF-1 Valkyrie from Arcadia caught my eye. I've been out of collecting for years and know nothing about the toys. So I'm looking for some guidance. The individual threads about these toys are hundreds of pages, so I'm asking for information in a easier to read thread. So here we are. So basically I just want to know if there are any details about these two toys (I'm probably looking for a VF-1J or VF-1S) that I would want to know about as a first time buyer? Was their multiple versions of these toys released? Was any version better than the other? Any serious defects? Any minor ones I should be aware of? Can you still purchase these online or are they all discontinued and now sold only on the secondary market? I'm not seeing these on HLJ. I also read in some other threads that Arcadia does reissues. How do you find out about these? Are the advertised in any way? Any idea of what is set to be reissued and what won't? Just looking for a few details for the newb breaking into collecting again. Any help is appreciated.
  15. This should bring out the best of MW's entitled indignation Marvel Comics Announces Female Thor http://www.slashfilm.com/marvel-comics-female-thor/ Gotta say, the character design is pretty damned awesome. Now I can't honestly say I'm ready to get onboard just because of a gender swap, but I will say Marvel has enough of my attention so far that I'm willing to read more about the book to then decide if the story is any good. The concept is at least different and unexpected.
  16. It's funny azrael should bring up Gundam 00. While the Robotech Academy ship design doesn't look much like that Gundam series, the animation style appears to be mimicking the spaceship CG of the series, though obviously not nearly as accomplished. Just the other day Seto told me about the ships of the Mospeada anime. Comparing this Academy ship and the Mospeada deigns, I can see now where the HG designers obtained some of the ideas. The engine "spires/vanes" are lifted directly from the Garfish and those grey colored "containers" on the bottom I've been told are likely Garfish-style fighter launch bays. The glowy bits feel like Next Gen/DS9/Voyager/Enterprise era Star Trek visuals, which is kinda jarring given the fulgy, military-like design and coloring. But what is it supposed to be, design-wise? Was it meant to simply look cool? That didn't happen. Was it meant to be a plausibly functional design? That didn't happen. Was it meant to have a unified style? That didn't happen. Was it meant to look like anime? Like western mecha? That didn't happen. Was it meant to look like military hardware? That kinda happened Was it meant to look near-future? Far-future? Can't tell what happened. Was it meant to be angular? Smooth? Neither? Both? Who really knows what happened? I don't think this Robotech Academy ship is the worst fictional starship design I've ever seen, but it's not memorable. I think my biggest problem is it brings nothing new to the table and has no unified aesthetic that would...well, distinguish it. I think the artists can't decide what they want it to be. It's a jumble of lifted design concepts simply thrown together because individually each design element was good, but together they don't add up. Some elements outright clash. It just feels like a confused mess
  17. I assume something like this "troll tier" or "spy tier" is to grab any money they can even from people that hate Harmony Gold or who Harmony Gold hates. THey'll take the money either way. Never seen a business publically admit that before, but this is Harmony Gold, the standard for lowbrow. Perhaps it's also "petty motivation" for Robotech fans with a chip on their shoulder that haven't yet donated to the Kickstarter. If Harmony Gold sets up the kickstarter to publically display Macross fan criticism, it may motivate less disciplined Robotech fans to donate just to slight those awful Macross fans
  18. I'm actually considering getting into this. It's been years since I picked up a transformable Macross toy and I gotta andmit this YF-30 Chronos is cool. Perhaps this will serve as something to keep me occupied until they reissue the Arcadia YF-19.
  19. Yeah, it's available on Steam. Looks a little pricy for such a small game. Thinking I might wait until a sale.
  20. Dear gawd...
  21. I don't think I can go through collecting a new series. Not even for the sake of the website. I hated re-purchasing this second series having owned the first. I can't justify doing it again (famous last words)
  22. Not sure why, but I just had a thought about why this kickstarter was created, why Robotech SC was so awful, and why it seems that all these Robotech projects get cancelled or go nowhere: the thought came from my own job. I'm responsible for a single client and for making that client profitable. Ensuring my team provides service, ensuring the customer is statisfied, ensuring contract renewal, etc. My client is happy and renews every year. But we also have "problem accounts", the accounts that cause people to burnout or cause high turnover in our staff. What if Robotech is one of the problem accounts for Harmony Gold? Many here have told me that Harmony Gold is primarily a real estate company, making money from purchasing, selling, leasing, etc. They also have media distribution; a sort of middle man for TV and films. So the "Robotech" IP would be one small part of the company and perhaps, it's a part no one really gives a crap about or actively avoids. People in HG know it's reputation; they know the Robotech account is plagued by legal troubles; they know past projects have been cancelled or outright failed; they know Robotech is an account to be avoided if you want upward mobility. Management also considers the Robotech account a dead end in the company, so no one ever champion's Robotech or fights to get it on it's feet. As such, the Robotech account is constantly mismanaged. This would parallel the history we know as public bystanders to the process. As a result, whoever moves in to take over the "Robotech account" has to come up with some way to make it work with little or no support and little or no money, each time. Perhaps past Robotech projects failed because there is no political will in the company to assign a needed budget. So each project gets going on what it can, only to fall apart without investment. The current guy/gal stuck with the Robotech account may be a person who thought the kickstarter thing was a way around the budget problem. And so here we are, with the Robotech Academy kickstarter. Anyway, just speculation. Perhaps their company structure is nothing like mine and the problems are different. It was just a thought that might explain some symptoms of the disease
  23. It may have a name that sounds like a gay porn but it's actually just an anime video game. Just watched a video about a game called Astebreed and it's a very visually rich shoot 'em up in the anime style we've all come to know and love. The game is built in 3D with game play changing from side-scroller shooter to top-down shooter to 3rd person shooter as you move throughout the environment. Lots of trademark visuals, including a giant robot with a sword, lots of energy weapons and of course, an Itano circus attack. Check it out: http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-astebreed/2300-9194/ Not sure if I'm totally sold on the game, but that name sure is giving me a chubby
  24. Didn't even know they made a model of this craft. Impressive.
