What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0

Kinda went down the Youtube rabbit hole,  and found an Anisong that I have never heard before that was quite the Banger of an ending.    I figured I'd give the anime a go Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon.

I am about halfway through it, circa 2015 and its nothing spectacular but its better then 95% of whatever they are pushing currently.       TBH the ending theme "Calling my Twillight" is the  most outstanding part of this whole series..

Undead Girl Murder Farce continues to be an unexpected delight with its latest episode.

I am truly, truly hoping this series gets renewed for another season... though it did get rather unexpectedly gory in the most recent episode.  In fairness, can it be called unexpected when

Spoiler

Jack the Ripper

is one of the principal antagonists?

I have to say, I wasn't quite expecting that

Spoiler

Professor Moriarty would truly be the show's greater scope villain since his main association is always with Sherlock Holmes.

It's not the weirdest attempt to explain Jack the Ripper that I've seen in popular fiction... which says something about how many attempts to explain Jack the Ripper there have been over the years.

Currently starting Classroom for Heroes.

This... this is pretty awful.  The title put me in the mind of a knockoff of My Hero Academia, which would be pretty tedious on its own, but this is another one of those tedious isekai-inspired "school for adventurers" type comedy titles that can't think of a joke better than "Look how quirky we are".  It's like the unwanted child of Combatants will be Dispatched! and any of a thousand "reincarnated hero tries to live a normal life and fails" fantasy comedies.  Never mind, it IS another tedious "the reincarnated overpowered hero tries to lead a normal life and fails" story... complete with the usual excessive level of fan service.

Gettin' caught up on a few titles...

Jujutsu Kaisen has started running again, and I have to say that I enjoy this series so much more when it forgets about the supernatural action and is just the main trio messing about as ordinary teenagers.  It's just so relentlessly grim otherwise that I have a hard time caring what happens to the joyless, unlikeable characters infesting the story.

Undead Girl Murder Farce is speeding into its first season's final story arc, with the team now going after werewolves who appear to be behind a string of murders in an isolated village.  Still interesting, still entertaining, I'm hopeful it'll end on a high note because I've enjoyed the hell out of it so far.

Classroom for Heroes... isn't worth anyone's time.  It is a form letter exercise in the standard "the ultimate hero is reincarnated, tries to lead a normal life, fails to be even slightly inconspicuous, and gets a harem" storyline that has been garbage every time it's been done.

My Tiny Senpai is devolving into similarly form letter ecchi fanservice with little semblance of an actual story and less of character development.  I feel like I've insulted the writer of My Senpai is Annoying after initially thinking it was a copycat of that series with the genders flipped.

Probably gonna start The Legendary Hero is Dead!, season two of the gun-eatingly insane sports anime Birdie Wing, Yuri is My Job, or go back a bit and watch Ai Tenchi Muyo! or Tenchi Muyo GXP: Paradise Starting.

Legendary Hero is Dead was entertaining, best part has to be the opening. Other then that best temper your expectations as the series goes cringe with the MC more times then not. It has it's moments and it's a pure fantasy anime which is rare these days.

Also depending on viewing it had some interesting ideas on identity with the amount of body swapping it does in the second half.

I really enjoyed this series,  mostly because it was dumb,  had plenty of humor and a good helping on ecchi.    Don't expect depth cause there is none,  but it held my interest.    I probably should go through and give it a rewatch.

The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses makes me laugh.  Mie has gotten bold lately. I think Komura finally understands.

I had to sit through the first few episodes of this,   I think the art is really well done but its premise is weak.    The viewer is expected to go along with the main gag every episode and its not a particularly interesting series to start with.       Again I only got through 4 episodes before I tuned it out,  it was rinse and repeat at that point.

Looking ahead and Fall Anime  season looks to be quite strong...

Making another valiant effort to get through Buddy Daddies... this show is absolutely awful.

A similar premise worked in Spy x Family because the kid was intelligent enough to understand what was going on with both of her adoptive parents even if she didn't understand the implications every time.

The kid in Buddy Daddies is beyond stupid.  I don't know how old she's supposed to be, but she has an IQ like a basement apartment number and the self-preservation of a clinically depressed cartoon lemming.  Worse, she's incredibly annoying and they keep trying to make her being annoying the focus of the comedy. 😕

Coming off an insane week... decided to watch something absurd.

Yuri is My Job! is... odd.  It's definitely unconventional as stories go.  An incredibly vain and nasty high school girl who's put her all into a facade of being cute, innocent, and charming in order to bag a rich husband accidentally injures someone on the street and is dragooned into covering their shifts at a theme cafe modeled on a private girls school in which all of the staff are working in character as schoolgirls in various yuri relationships.

For all the protagonist's confessions to scumbag motives early on, it's surprisingly easy to get invested in her peculiar struggle because she has absolutely no idea what's going on, her coworkers can't be arsed to explain anything properly, and so she's left to fake it 'til she makes it and hope that she doesn't piss her new coworkers off too badly.  It might help a bit that I'm honestly as lost as she is...

(Or maybe it's that a sympathize with her for having such a wildly irresponsible manager who waited until her third shift before bothering to explain even the basic rules of her new and very odd workplace?)

After your description I started to watch the show too. Somehow the main character gives me a lot of B Gata H K vibes. Not sure why that is.

After watching the first three episodes I wonder were the story is going to go…

I also fairly certain that the manager is not actually hurt. For some reason her MO for hiring new employees is to blackmail them into servitude.

After six episodes, I'm strongly considering proposing a new title...

Yuri for Fun and Profit.

Spoiler

Because whooboy is it clear this cafe is rapidly becoming a shoujo ai love nest with spectator seating.

Love triangle included at no additional cost.

Yeah, I definitely got that vibe too... especially considering she can't seem to remember that her arm is actually injured half the time despite the wrap.

Funimation Crunchyroll's dropped its lineup for next season.

It's a pretty weak lineup so far, that's pretty heavy on isekai shovelware.  The only standouts I can see are Jujutsu Kaisen's continuing 2nd season, Dr. Stone's second cour, Goblin Slayer II, and OVERTAKE!.  There are still seven shows to be announced, though.

I've caught up on a few titles... The Undead Girl Murder Farce still seems to be this season's standout for me, with one episode left to go and the promise of a season two on the horizon.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy S2, Classroom for HeroesYuri is My Job!, and My Tiny Senpai have all limped to fairly sub-par finishes.

I also finished Buddy Daddies, which was an absolute mess to the very end.

Keeping up weekly with Jujutsu...

Spoiler

but I'm starting to fear for my favorite character Gojo, lots of focus on him while keeping his trio students rather low on development, meaning the creator is preparing to devastate a lot of fans...

The Undead Girl Murder Farce - Starting on this soon.

Otherwise been rewatching Patlabor... the OVA remains quite painful, but the films epic. Now about a quarter done with the series.

Also keeping up with Zom 100, it's a gem.

One thing that keeps me from rewatching Patlabor is how little effort went into the writing... there are whole plots that get recycled four or five times over in quick succession, the most blatant case being the "there's a manmade kaiju preying on Labors" that culminated in WXIII.

Cannot argue. Abruptly goes all kaiju for an episode or 2, then shifts back being this hard grounded military espionage saga. I really don't get that.

I got dragged along this season and with things wrapping I will add my thoughts..

Helck..   TBH not as terrible as I thought but nothing to write home about either.     Most of this series completely ignores the events that set the whole series up in the first few episodes.     I would assume that this will start coming back into focus in the 2nd half.  However this series is too silly for me to take seriously no matter what they decide to do.

The Duke of Death S2..    As I mentioned previously I absolutely loathe this CGI .   The group I watch with kept at it and much content was cut to push this series down the path.   The 2nd season ends with the start of the climax of series.    Basically its going to be read the Manga to know more.. OR we actually get a S3 depending on how S2 did.   And an update..  S3 has been announced..   https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2023-09-24/the-duke-of-death-and-his-maid-anime-gets-3rd-season-in-2024/.202765

Horimiya -piece-..   As already known this series is focusing on much of the content that was edited out of Horimiya.    TBH as a standalone this series really does not make any sense as it jumps around ALOT.    It also seems to focus on making Hori look terrible on how she treats Morimiya.    You MUST be familiar with the source to debunk either of this.   Regardless I really enjoyed Horimiya as a whole,   I still would recommend it but only after watching the original series.

Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha Ⅱ, Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta, Hataraku Maou-sama!! 2nd Season...     I have the same opinion for all 3..  Dropped.       I know my group kept up with Megane,  but I passed.

Uchi no Kaisha no Chiisai Senpai no Hanashi,  Not terrible,  but not particularly noteworthy either.    I have seen worse takes on this trope,  but in the words of the Mrs.  Its cute enough to keep her interest.   I went along for the ride.

Undead Girl Murder Farce..   It started with an interesting premise,  but lost me with the "Pretty Boy" variants of Lupin and the Phantom of the Opera.  I have caught up to episode 11 as of writing this,  so unless they stick the ending..  meh.

Temple..  I am up to episode 11 of this one as well,  Its a Harem Rom-Com with ample ecchi.     I don't expect this series to end with any real BANG,  so if you enjoy the premise you'll like this.    If not.. pass.

Lv1 Maou to One Room Yuusha..  this is my choice for Best of the season.     Its not itself anything SUPER but it stuck its ending and was a standout in an otherwise weak summer season.

AI no Idenshi..   this was my late addition, with many people talking about it being an underdog.   I am only 2 episodes in and will try to finish if I can get into it.

Well, the new season's off to a meh start...

Jujutsu Kaisen continues its headlong march into "Too Bleak, Stopped Caring" territory with a story arc that seems to exist for the sole purpose of having the villains massacre as many civilians as they can.  It really feels like it's run out of things to show and is resorting to Gantz-style gore porn in an attempt to seem "edgy" and "mature".  This series is a lot more fun when it's just Yuji and his classmates screwing around and loses a lot of what makes it fun and interesting when it gets into its action sequences.

The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent got a second season this season, and it's pretty unremarkable just like the first one.  It's not a bad series by any means, but it's clearly still taking the lion's share of its inspiration from Miya Kazuki's Ascendance of a Bookworm but without the sheer scale of that story's vision and worldbuilding.  It follows many of the same plot beats, but because Sei seems to be the only character the story has any interest in developing she's left to trail an ever-increasing number of shallow stock prettyboys right out of any fantasy-themed otome game in her wake as she moves through her story.  The story could be interesting if it made more of an effort to establish the other main characters a bit and get more into the stakes of her story, but it doesn't... so it's just Sei and like half a dozen palate swaps of the same generic bishounen love interest.

I'm about to start I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness... which seems like it'll be pretty dull.  It seems like the longer a title is these days, the more form-letter its plot becomes.  EDIT: It's pretty tedious.  A self-professed Demon Lord living in a house out in the woods tries to teach an extreme doormat girl who's been framed for treason by her fiance as an excuse to dump her some healthy comping mechanisms, through his extremely hammy methods.

Sounds like at the rate they're going, the next major anime will be Watching Paint Dry: A Love/ Horror/ Comedy Story.

Statistically speaking there's gotta be something good coming out this season...

There's Part II of Birdie Wing - Girls Golf Story, which was a drug trip and a half in a world where golf is such serious business that there's a massive underworld based largely if not entirely upon gambling on it.

OVERTAKE! is also supposed to be pretty interesting, it's another unconventional sports anime about Formula One racing.

Goblin Slayer II is a lost cause.  I know, I've read the light novel far in advance of what's being adapted.  As amusing as "Medieval Batman preptime meme" was, the story's got no real direction after Water Town and it loses a certain je ne sais quoi without the anime acknowledging the light novel's particular conceit that the world is literally a tabletop game and Goblin Slayer a particularly uncooperative character who occasionally manages to literally interfere with the game itself.

Spy x Family II has a lot of promise... that one was solid gold last season.

I've got hopes, however limited, for The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch and Tearmoon Empire.

I've heard some mixed reviews of Rurouni Kenshin's remake series... apparently it's got much higher production values, but they've edited the story to grim it up quite a bit with the removal of a lot of its comedy.

I think I’ve been more entertained by watching Barbatos Rex doing paint reviews than current anime.  It’s basically watching paint dry and seems to be a mix of a love/ horror/ comedy with a bit of education added in

Feeling a bit under the weather and binging the current season's offerings today...

The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch is, thus far, a relatively harmless and cutesy slice-of-life comedy about a witch who adopts and raises a baby she finds abandoned in the woods one day.  The show's comedy comes from a mixture of "the struggles of a single parent in a fantasy world" and the adopted daughter's overprotective streak when it comes to her mother.  It's not great, but it's lighthearted and fun enough that I've had no trouble sticking with it through four episodes so far.
