wm cheng Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Oh @pengbuzz I am so sorry to hear about your bad news. You have our thoughts and prayers. There really is nothing anyone can say or do that can make this any better, only time will heal. I remember some of the happy news you mentioned when she would secretly buy you something that you've been wanting or replace some model that broke - it was pretty special how she would hunt for these items for you. All I can say is remember all the good that she brought into your world and carry on the best you can in her name and honour. Condolences, my friend and hope you return someday when you're ready. All the best, William Quote

Papa Rat Posted March 20 Posted March 20 (edited) I am on the final stretch with the Wave 1/144 LED Mirage Colus. Just needs panel lines, decals and a few areas to dial in and touchup. Would also like to invest in a vise sometime. The empty jar with a pile of tac works but I want to up my game. Haha Edited March 20 by Papa Rat Quote

I hear the larger and older 1/100 are a pain but I really want the flame launcher version and also the older black knight kit. One day Quote

One day I keep wondering if they will do the boomerang unit and inferno napalm on the 1/144 Volks kit. I think they only did the basic in small scale. I can’t even imagine where I’d fit the 1/100 Quote
Papa Rat Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Wave had an inferno napalm 1/144 but scrapped it. Wish they would revisit. I can imagine Volks doing it though eventually. That would be great! I’m guessing 1/144 KOG with buster will come first. Quote

derex3592 Posted March 21 Posted March 21 (edited) So after months of putting it off, the deck on the Texas is now done! Now... I kinda cheated... I mixed up a wash using Vallejo French Blue and Black thinned with H20 and made the color that the deck is supposed to be which is officially US Navy Deck Blue 1942 20B, which is what the actual ship is getting the deck repainted in at this very moment down in Galveston TX. Now I'm sure the pros who build lots of ships are way better than I am at knowing how to paint decks and not make a complete mess of all the stuff ON the deck but an acrylic wash is very forgiving so I went that route. All done with a small brush. Took about 3 coats, to darken it up but from a foot away in natural light it looks pretty believable. A few... well a lot... of touch up with the gray around the gun tubs need to happen but that's not terrible. Then.... It's time to drop the superstructers and main guns down on this bad boy! P. S.... If anybody needs any True North (not cheap) enamel US NAVY DECK BLUE 20B, holla at ur boy, I have 3 unopened bottles! 😂 Edited March 21 by derex3592 Quote

Papa Rat Posted March 21 Posted March 21 (edited) Finished up the Wave 1/144 LED Colus. a fun little build. Noticing a lot of sinks in this kit among other strange design choices for construction Edited March 21 by Papa Rat Quote

Noticing a lot of sinks in this kit among other strange design choices for construction Looks better than the one I did a few years back. Might have been more than a few, possibly 20. I remember the colors being a newer version of their even older 1/144 kit although I still remember it being a long while back Quote
Papa Rat Posted March 22 Posted March 22 (edited) Finally returning to the Plamax Bellvine. Not many seams to deal with, but it has lots of mold lines. I will completely buildup all subassembly’s like head, arms, legs, feet, thrusters etc… and have fun being loose with my painting. Probably only masking off the eyes on this one and then move on to brush painting lacquer for the metal hoses etc… Looking forward to being more freestyle in my approach due to the semi organic vibe and messing around with this bug…or is it a bird? Not sure Edited March 22 by Papa Rat Quote
Papa Rat Posted March 24 Posted March 24 (edited) Trying some layering on this Bellvine. Black primer, silver underpainting and two green colors…shadows and highlights. Also a sandy yellow in there too. I wasn’t sure the silver would do much but I think it does add a little more depth. I painted the clear parts silver and clear purple candy. well I think airbrush time is done for now. I’ll move along to brush painting the details Edited March 24 by Papa Rat Quote

Papa Rat Posted March 25 Posted March 25 (edited) So I decided to try adding some mottled texture to the Bellvine. My kid was kind enough to let me perform surgery on one of their old stuffies to extract some poly fill to use as a filter to spray through. It’s hard to photograph but I am digging the outcome. Less is more that’s for sure. Going to add a topcoat next and then it’s time to muck it up with some washes and panel liner. The silver hoses are going to look great once all the recessed areas get some oil wash sitting in there. Edited March 25 by Papa Rat Quote

I have been wanting to try out new ways of adding some effects to plain surfaces and thought this build would be a great opportunity to try it out. A bio mechanical design seems perfect for this sort of thing. Inspired by how a bugs shell looks or subtle speckled effects in a salamanders skin. Edited March 25 by Papa Rat Quote
derex3592 Posted March 25 Posted March 25 I think everybody's everything has been sitting in the HLJ warehouse for months now........LMAO... unfortunately, I'm gonna have to ship my Hasegawa Glaug and TV-Q-Rau models this weekend as my free time is up.... LOVE that mottling effect @Papa Rat! Definitely wanna try that on the TV Qau! Quote

LOVE that mottling effect @Papa Rat! Definitely wanna try that on the TV Qau! Thanks. I’ll try and take a pic of what I used but it’s so straightforward…stretch poly fill across surface and spray then repeat. It’s not some sort of witchcraft. Ok a little black magic maybe. Lol I’m so pumped for you getting some items shipped out too. I need to do the same since I imagine my free PW time is running out. Ugh. Maybe my wife ships it out for me for my bday gift? Hmmmmm. Scheming. How’s the ship? Also how’s the tank coming? 👀 Edited March 25 by Papa Rat Quote
wm cheng Posted March 25 Posted March 25 That looks amazing @Papa Rat!!! I remember spending all this time in my youth trying to get a perfect flat smooth coat of paint and now we are seeing all these amazing weathering effects of paint fading and textures to liven up flat areas of colour - what a turnaround! So you airbrushed through the stuffing? Did you hold the stuffing or lay it on the surface to shoot through? Quote

So you airbrushed through the stuffing? Did you hold the stuffing or lay it on the surface to shoot through? Yeah. I just held the piece and stuffing in my off hand and sprayed. Went lightly at first and finding a sweet spot for paint flow will just happen. Smaller bursts of paint were most effective for my attempts. Soooo simple. I found that after the stuffing was used a bit the effect was better since there were some more defined pathways for the paint to penetrate. Does that make sense? The whole process was inspired by folks spraying through dried up distressed baby wipes to create marble effects I didn’t want marble but used a similar method. I didn’t have baby wipes so used stuffing as a filter Next time I will make sure to put on gloves. Hahaha. Well as far as weathering I absolutely loved the Ostrich you shared on here. That had such an amazing surface treatment and required quite the process if I remember. Edited March 25 by Papa Rat Quote
