HG and Robotech Debates

BUT MEMO ESTIMATES IT WILL BE GREENLIT SHORTLY, and they used some one with dramatic expiernce so it dont suck like transformers

(Actually it was Mav who estimated it would be greenlit shortly, but whatever. :) )

And yeah...dramatic experience...? WHAT dramatic experience? He's done a direct-to-video "erotic thriller" (I think...that's what Trois 3: the Escort looks like, at least), a direct-to-video slasher movie, and a not-very-well-received dance movie.

Oh well. At least the guy's got range. He's made bad films in a variety of genres.

At this point, they'd hype up anyone who becomes associated with Robotech over the years. And I mean ANYONE that gets approached, even Uwe Boll. Imagine them giving more credit to House of the Dead, Far Cry, and In the Name of the King then they really should get because he's working on Robotech.

I bet there wasn't a script, just a wad of cash and goading about the career opportunities for it. Like the trend of people getting involved in adaptations, they were "fans" of the originals.

I would remove the cash part. I dont think WB will invest too heavily on a show that hasnt had a new TV series in over 20 years.

I thought they already did with... what's the full list of people that have been associated with the Robotech LAM now? At least one of them was paid to write something like a script/screenplay. You got Spider-Man who's moving on to more serious material, the Star Wars person who just left without warning, the Smallville writers either tweening it up or going back to the show for a TENTH(!) season, the crime drama novelist that came out of nowhere, and this new guy who's recent film might be seen more critically by certain people for another subject, if quality still matters to them.

Plus, WB may have paid HG something in order to get the rights to make a LAM.

The Smallville creators left the show a year ago. Not to mention they're now suing WB for breach-of-contract for self-dealing the license of Smallville to affiliates at below-market rates.

Plus, WB may have paid HG something in order to get the rights to make a LAM.

If any money was put up-front to obtain the license, it would have a small amount, probably to cover lawyer fees.

I won't be surprised if we hear a few director-names being approached to helm the project between now and whenever.

Oh yes... our wannabe film industry insider and expert, who thinks the very height of wit is a film about his drunk-ass friends breaking car windows in a junkyard. It is worth noting that he tried to ignore the fact that it was an early draft being shown around, not a completed script or anything close to it. Odds are it was the completed Lawrence Kasdan script from about two years ago, not something by Gough, Millar, and Smith. Either way, it's par for the course with more of Maverick and MEMO talking out of their asses in hopes of stirring up some enthusiasm. So far, the people who've responded seem to all be either the ones who're praying for ANYTHING new, and the ones who've been sucking up for aeons in hopes of getting a mod post.

Oh well. At least the guy's got range. He's made bad films in a variety of genres.

Sounds like a perfect fit for Robotech... he can handle the incredibly stupid dialogue, bad writing, and hackneyed premises because he's already used to that sort of thing.

Exactly right... Robotech has been a dead property for so long, and fans have gotten so desperate for any news that will convince them the franchise hasn't finally up and died that any news is good news. For any rational reader, that Sylvain White was approached to direct speaks volumes about the low regard in which Warner holds Robotech. If they were serious about the movie and thought it would be a blockbuster, they would've approached candidates who've headed up highly profitable properties like James Cameron or Michael Bay.

There's no doubt in my mind these people would be hailing Plan 9 from Outer Space as a misunderstood cinematic gem if Ed Wood had been approached to direct Robotech.

Best part of the article:

Remember how I said scripts can sit at a studio and not move...So he hasn't agreed nor is the project greenlit.

That would be like a friend at Big-Name-Corp telling me of a possible project that I might be interested in joining, but Big-Name-Corp hasn't posted a job listing for.

 Good Grief.

Obviously, there must be some kind of screenplay floating out there if someone has been approached for this franchise.

Looking for a director could mean they have enough of a script done to start asking around for potential directors. The part that everyone is skipping is the not greenlit portion. I wouldn't be popping off the Champagne yet either, with the possible director. "I Know What You Did Last Summer 3"??? "Stomp the Yard"??? Not stuff I'd be bragging about so much. I can see it now, Rickie Hunter pop lockin' with a broom stick in Very Tek fighter training. Good F!@kin' Grief!!!

A screenplay is sorta necessity for bringing in a director. Unless the franchise is popular enough to attract attention just by mentioning the name alone. Now which screenplay? Dunno. Three were produced but which one WB is shopping with is the question. But yes, I agree that people seem to forget that it hasn't been greenlit yet so it still hasn't really moved anywhere since. Like I said, I imagine we'll probably hear a few more names being mentioned but the light is still red so there's no real need to jump out of the seat yet.

Yep, there's a big difference between moving forward, and merely getting your ducks in a row, which seems to be the case here. In the rt.com thread, Memo welcomes the "naysayers", and it looks like even that director is kinda a naysayer at this point. I agree that this news doesn't mean that it isn't anywhere closer to getting made. When there's a greenlight, then I'll say OK, WB (not HG) is working on it. I know that's something Tommy, Kevin, and Memo like to forget and they make these half-assed comments that associate HG with this project. Aside from negotiating with WB in getting the rights and the sort, this is WB's baby, and they're either gonna do it, or not. HG can't take credit for any news coming from this.

Strange, in the fact that MEMO and Mav have banned all the naysayers, or at least, the supposed 'ringleaders' of the massive cabal of Macross-Purist Nay-saying closed-minded idiots that refuse to see the grandeur and glory that is RT.

Hmmm...

EDIT: Forgot to include Mav in that... Sorry, Mav.

I disagree, MEMO and LSC would make up the craziest hype about just anything to do with Robotech, no matter what.

No joke, those still supportive of this should be very concerned who WB is asking to get involved in the LAM these days. From the star of Spider-Man, to someone who worked on Star Wars, and eventually to some of the most obscure people in various mediums, it says a lot about WB's thoughts on this venture already.

Not if you banned them all, dumbass.

Hey, for all we know this guy could either be the next Peter Jackson... or McG. One thing's for sure... Tommy won't be showing his entire resume in the upcoming San Diego panel. I hear interesting things about The Losers though.

You're right, Sylvain White could be a naysayer or keeping his options open at this point.

http://scifiwire.com/2010/04/losers-director-confirms.php

"Well, it's not a project that's greenlit, so you know, ... It's a great cult series. When it came out, I actually saw it in France, growing up. I saw it in French. It's a pretty amazing cartoon. And I'm hoping it's going to come to fruition. I read a draft that's really good. ... I'm interested in doing it, but the project is not fast tracked or anything like that, so there's no official thing. There's no deal. ... They sent me a draft. I liked it. It's a work in progress."

Remind me, what's the difference between a draft, script, and screenplay?

So depending on how that ends, there's the possibility the two may or may not want to work with WB, or a particular adaptation?

At the same time, they guy might decide to decline so since he hasn't agreed to anything. So you can throw the name out but the official line is, they're still shopping for a director.

You're right, Sylvain White could be a naysayer or keeping his options open at this point.

Little of column A, little of column B. He doesn't want to say yes since that might generate false buzz and get him in trouble. But he can't say no since WB might say, "You're our guy for this." It's like a job offer. But in this case, the job doesn't really exist yet since the project hasn't been greenlit.

Remind me, what's the difference between a draft, script, and screenplay?

A draft could be anything.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filmmaking#Development

We're probably looking at somewhere between a "treatment" and a "screenplay".

So depending on how that ends, there's the possibility the two may or may not want to work with WB, or a particular adaptation?

Maybe, maybe not. We won't know for a while.

Do you want to hear something funny? Memo isnt a fan who kisses Tommy Yune's ass, Memo works for Tommy Yune.

He is paid to act as a link between fans and what Tommy Yune wants. He presents himself as a fan in public, but in private to those websites and fans who supports Tommy Yune, he presents himself as an employee of Harmony Gold.

Setokaiba, I thought he presented to you like that, I owe you an apologize.

The Robotech franchise is a mess. There are at leat 5 groups of former/current employees from the 80s/90s/2000s who fights for their own place. They show an image in public, and they show and do other things from behind. The funny thing is, they have to trust each other at the same time they are fighting each other from behind, trying to get the support of fans and robotech personalities for their own group. It would be amazing if a franchise could run like that

Source? 'Cause sorry, but I don't buy it. HG's modus operandi has, time and time again, to use the fans' enthusiasm and hard work without ever paying them for anything. Why would they pay Memo to do something he'd already do for free?

There are a lot of sources and a lot of details. If you are interested enough, you'll find it yourself.

I'm not particulary interested in revealing my sources, but I know other fans here knows this is true. Perhaps they are interested to tell more about this besides me? If you want some hint to start looking, just start to wonder how some websites gets so easy access to exclusive information and contacts so suddenly. Y'know...it's times like this that the hardcore Robotech fandom seems like a bunch of gossipy old women, spreading rumors, nursing grudges, and planning bitter vengeance against sections of the fandom they don't like.

I'm not trying to paint everyone with the same brush, since there are some reasonable people in the fandom...but backstabbing and personal attacks seem to be par for the course.

It all seems pretty silly overall.

Let me see, what else can I tell without exposing too much the sources. The parts directly involved in the development (if the word applies) of Robotech (from now and before) leak information to different groups of fans to get support from them. Again, some users here knows this is true but almost everybody covers their sources because they think it's worth something (exclusive information mainly, that's used to gather fans, but there are even more "material" things than that)

And as Sylvain White said, not only is it not greenlit, it's also not on the fast track to getting greenlit.

An important distinction that Maverick_LSC and MEMO1DOMINION resolutely refuse to acknowledge in their many fruitless attempts to stir up something resembling enthusiasm for the lurching cinematic atrocity that is Robotech's live action movie project.

I disagree, MEMO and LSC would make up the craziest hype about just anything to do with Robotech, no matter what.

Oh, there's no doubt about that... after all, these are the people who banned everyone intelligent enough to find fault with Shadow Chronicles because they thought Warner was going to take umbrage over it, and that those doing so were just out to cause "pain and suffering". Crazy rationales and crazier theories are their bread and butter.

Oh I'm sure he's baiting any naysayers who are left

so when they speak up he can lay down the banhammer quick and fast.

Y'know, I wouldn't be surprised if that were true...

Oh, I'll still rain on their parade, but I'll do it the way Maverick, MEMO, DougBendo, and WDKaiserV1 say I do everything... through my legions of brainwashed Macross purist minions who, like me, feed on the suffering of the innocent and the simple!

Do you want to hear something funny? Memo isnt a fan who kisses Tommy Yune's ass, Memo works for Tommy Yune.

He is paid to act as a link between fans and what Tommy Yune wants.

No offense, but I find that EXTRAORDINARILY hard to believe... MEMO's been kissing Tommy's ass in hopes of getting a job at Harmony Gold for ages, but there's no indication that he's ever actually ACQUIRED a position there. If he had, he would never be able to keep quiet about it, just like McKeever wasn't when he first got hired in. He'd be shouting it from the rooftops like a six foot tall, tuna-wearing rooster.

He presents himself as a fan in public, but in private to those websites and fans who supports Tommy Yune, he presents himself as an employee of Harmony Gold.

Now, as far as I can tell, THIS part is actually true... I've heard plenty of accounts from fans who've witnessed MEMO attempting to convince other fans that he's a Robotech.com administrator rather than just a simple moderator, making promises he can't keep in exchange for aid from gullible fans. I've heard from some folks that Alois Fisher is one such stooge, to whom MEMO reportedly promised a moderator position at Robotech.com in exchange for his help. Both Mav and MEMO have always tried to paint themselves as Harmony Gold insiders, and as near as anyone can tell, entirely without the actual connections to back it up. They just do it to intimidate fans who give a toss about that sort of thing, and to make their balls feel big (assuming Maverick's wife has returned his).

Setokaiba, I thought he presented to you like that, I owe you an apologize.

Eh? You've lost me...

Source? 'Cause sorry, but I don't buy it. HG's modus operandi has, time and time again, to use the fans' enthusiasm and hard work without ever paying them for anything. Why would they pay Memo to do something he'd already do for free?

Yeah, I would wonder that myself... it just doesn't sound in any way credible, even after all the seemingly outlandish claims about MEMO trying to blame me for the death of Robotech Genesis and the subsequent DeviantArt fiasco turned out to be true...

There are a lot of sources and a lot of details. If you are interested enough, you'll find it yourself.

Translation: "I can't back up what I said earlier".

I'm not particulary interested in revealing my sources, but I know other fans here knows this is true. Perhaps they are interested to tell more about this besides me? Dude, it's not exactly HARD to get in touch with these voice actors and whatnot... many of them will JUMP at the chance to be interviewed, because it means someone will actually notice them for once, when their very jobs as dub voice actors makes them entirely uninteresting to the American anime industry's core demographic. And, of course, Carl Macek and Tommy Yune both have such rampant egos that they'll talk to anybody so long as it means a chance to inflate their own sense of self-importance. Robotech is a nonentity, and those responsible for it desperately want to be acknowledged for what they fondly imagine is their genius. :p

This is why I prefer Macross fandom. We like Macross. Some of us don't like Macross sequels that have numbers in their titles. Some of us think all the jpop sucks, and we should focus on the Valkyries. Some of us really like the jpop and STILL think we should focus on the Valkyries. That's about as complicated as it gets, which is fine by me. :)

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought he was about to offer me a choice between a red pill and a blue pill...

All joking aside, being vague and secretive is not the way to get anyone here to take you seriously... least of all me. If a rumor comes from a credible source I'll point it out as being an item of interest, but vague conspiracy theories involving ill-defined shadowy machinations either for or against Robotech crop up so frequently in the Robotech fanbase that you'd swear they were giving them out as swag at every Harmony Gold convention panel.

BTW Setokaiba, I can tell you something to you in private. But dont quote me on that. Email?

Now, I know this might be a novel idea, but if you have something private to tell me you could always use the e-mail and private message systems built right into the MacrossWorld forums... both of which are available in the "Contact Info" part of my profile, and the "send message" button in the drop-down menu attached to my screen name.

Hmmm...no offense intended, but it sounds like another patented Robotech conspiracy theory...

Totally... this sounds hokey even compared to the crazy stuff that was coming out of the whole UEG fiasco... and I've long since become inured to the insanity that seems to be an intrinsic feature of the Robotech fanbase.

Totally... Macross fandom comes with a LOT less drama, and a lot more actual substance.

As for this MEMO-works-for-Tommy-nonsense, who bloody cares? But if you're gonna say something and be all secretive about your source, then why reveal it at all. It would be no better than a rumor.

As news filters to other entertainment sites, I'm really seeing how 3rd party people (i.e. fans of neither Macross or Robotech) don't quite understand the legality of WB can and cannot use to produce this flick. And even then, I highly doubt WB will be using the same designs.

They'd be foolish to. What looks good in a cartoon (or comic book) rarely looks good in live action. And really, everything SHOULD be updated. And updates means change.

Again, I find it funny that so many Robotech fans approve of Macek futzing with Macross (because that produced a TIMELESS CLASSIC) but now DEMAND that WB not futz with Macek's futzed-up version.

Isn't it ironic? Doncha think?
