Going over Flashback 2012 again. So anybody else making a distinction of the rest of the fleet besides the Megaroad and the Nupetiet-Vergnitzs refit?

On another note. Either it is an artistic rendition or is it me there are two Minmays below when Minmay left in the Megaroad-01?

I know cloning was involved in repopulating Earth but in 2012?

You're asking if we can make out any other classes of ship in those scenes apart from the Nupetiet-Vergnitzs refit and Megaroad-class colony ship? There's something at the bottom edge of the frame that looks vaguely like an Oberth-class guided missile destroyer, but I don't think the artbooks actually mention any other new types of ship apart from those two. They're just vague blobs in the background for the most part.

On another note. Either it is an artistic rendition or is it me there are two Minmays below when Minmay left in the Megaroad-01?

It looks to me like a low-detail background character with a similar haircut, not a clone of Minmay. It's not exactly uncommon for animators to fill background crowds with simple variations on existing character designs.

I remember reading something (and I *think* it was an interview with either Kawamori or Mikimoto) about that being a "Dream Minmay" or something like that. Confused the hell out of me as a kid. I was never sure if she left on the ship or stayed behind.

Can someone back me up on this...? TheLoneWolf? Renato? Anyone...?

And that pretty much sums up what we know about the Megaroad-01 fleet. I think I recently read somewhere that Zentraadi ships, an SDFN class ship and at least one ARMD (SDF:M style) accompanied the fleet, but nothing clear or with definite numbers.

Anyhow, re: the Oberth lookalike: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/Sketchley/S...h/NeoOberth.htm

I haven't read any interviews, but I always interpreted the two Minmays as metaphor to represent Minmay bidding her old self/life farewell and moving on with the Megaroad.

That's how I interpreted most of the video. Cuz the whole video paralleled Minmay leaving for South Ataria Island with Minmay leaving for Megaroad-01.

I think someone's trying to read into this too much.... <_<

Regarding the 2 Minmays... it represents one of the genius strokes of the original Macross (series andmovie). It was like they pre-injected nostalgia into it. With the closing credits of the series and how it goes thru the scrap book and the melancholy farewell song (I'm assuming, I don't know Japanese). But that scene with the 2 Minmays. like Lonewolf says, it's about saying goodbye to the Minmay that could have been or Minmay seeing herself and the whole Love triangle from the outside.

I remember that interview, it was definitely one with Kawamori. He states there are two Minmays in that scene, but doesn't expand on it. Can't recall where it came from.

If I remember correctly

Minmay left in the Megaroad-01, Flashback 2012 is an artistic interpretation of Minmay decision and feelings about leaving earth to be with her friends (Hikaru & Misa) with her parents staying behind, and as mentioned, it's an representation of the Macross fan nostalgically seeing for the last time the original love triangle leave

Flashback was originally the closing credits for DYRL but they ran out of budget, so after the success of DYRL they released the Flashback video so we can all say goodbye to the Hikaru, Misa and Minmay

I don't know why people want more about this 3, we got SDFM, DYRL and FB2012, all 3 great stories with memorable and epic endings, unlike 7 with an unresolved triangle and Frontier with an idiot flying instead of picking a girl

unlike 7 with an unresolved triangle

More like a love polygon that wont go anywhere as the main guy doesn't care.

Really Basara had an unwanted harem. Mylene, Flower Girl, Rex, Sivil, Emillia.

And that pretty much sums up what we know about the Megaroad-01 fleet. I think I recently read somewhere that Zentraadi ships, an SDFN class ship and at least one ARMD (SDF:M style) accompanied the fleet, but nothing clear or with definite numbers.

Hmm... SK in an interview did say as to not confuse the audience Zentradi ships as emigration ships weren't used on screen.

On the other hand refitted Nupetiet-Vergnitzs classes were shown with Megaroad-01 and Macross 5.

Though we can also interpret what you've read as ships built with Zentradi technology rather than refits. The Algenicus cruiser type has a Zentradi aesthetic.

If indeed the SDFN types were being massed produced as early as 2012 it would explain two things.

1. The Macross after a couple of months is fully repaired and brand new. Enough spare parts.

2. Calling the Macross Class as first generation emigration ships makes more sense.

Two Minmay = pretty basic symbolism.

Young Minmay, leaving home [her parents] for a new life alongside the SDF-1 Macross (I really like the presentation of this bit of her backstory in Flashback)

Mature Minmay leaving home [Earth] for a new life onboard the Megaroad.

You see the second, younger Minmay on the ground during the launch ceremony, an echo of Minmay's past in her recollections, bridging her life in the start of this new era and her life at the start of the previous (SWI) era.

"Cloning"? "Background characters"? C'mon, guys...

This is a classic example of over-thinking something that is incredibly simple.

Young Minmay is seen a number of times in Flashback, and she's wearing the same outfit and has the same hairstyle in every single scene. You see young Minmay arguing with her parents, packing her stuff, and stumbling around on the street with a suitcase. You see young Minmay looking at a poster for the SDF-01, which fades to Mature Minmay looking at a poster for the Megaroad-01. And in the finale you see Mature Minmay leaving aboard the Megaroad, leaving behind the person she was.

From the Macross Compendium:

"Fallacy: "In Flash Back 2012, Minmay stayed behind on Earth while the Ichijyos embarked on the Megaroad-01."

Explanation: Minmay decides to embark on the Megaroad-01, as confirmed by later chronologies and timelines. In fact, in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross Vol. V: Rhapsody in Love - Macross Love that was released four years before Flash Back 2012, writer Shoji Kawamori (who also wrote the last episode of the first Macross series), has Minmay tell Hikaru and Misa that she also will be on the colonization ship captained by Misa.

Source of fallacy: Assumption based on the symbolic image of a younger Minmay ("Sending-Off Minmay") seen on Earth as the Megaroad launches while Minmay ("Minmay at the Observation Window") watches from window on the Megaroad-01. Kawamori said he deliberately put in two Minmays in the Megaroad-01 launch scenes, but he has since confirmed that Minmay did indeed embark on the ship.?"

I was mentioning them in the sense of being used as escort ships...

But they weren't. #33 of Macross Chronicles gives a specific number of how many were produced.

THAT'S IT! That's the quote I was thinking of...I don't know why I thought it was from an interview...guess I'm getting old.

12 were produced, including the SDFN-01 General Hayase and the infamous SDFN-04 General Bruno J. Global.

Only two were given names?

Guess the Hayase was named after Misa's dad who blew up a fraction of the Boddole fleet.

Wonder if a couple were named after Max, Millia, Vrlithwai and Exsedol.

Well maybe not Exsedol as a mall was already named after him.

This was always my interpretation, especially if you take the first chorus of "Angel's Paints" into account (apologies for my rough translation):

Kanashii dekigoto ga

BURUU ni someta kokoro mo

Tenshi no en no gu de nurikaeru yo

Omoi no mama ni

"With angel's paints I'll paint over

as I please

even my heart dyed blue

by sad events"

Just to top it of the argument that its pretty evident that Minmay leaves Earth with the Megaroad 1; I don't think we would have seen Richard Bilra harbouring a desire to see Minmay in Macross Frontier if she had stayed on earth. It would have just messed up the continuity a bit.

Very interesting thread, and surprisingly interesting artistic rendition of Minmey - I did not know about the two minmey thing.

Very interesting. I like it.

Pete

Have you seen Flashback yet? You really should! It's 30 minutes of the purest Macross concentrate possible.

I always took it as Minmay saying good bye to her naive & young self. The mature and wise Minmay left with the Megaroad leaving behind her innocent self on Earth.

Yes, you are right, but there is something I wanted to point out.

I am pretty sure Minmei is showin on Earth in Macross Plus. I believe during the 3rd act, or close to the end of the 2nd Act. She's at the Sheryl concert.

So, how does she return to Earth? Macross Plus takes place what? 20 years after DYRL? Where's Hikaru? Misa?

From a story telling standpoint, Hikaru and Misa don't move the story foreward, so they were never shown.

Having Minmei at the Sheryl concert was another metaphore, a passing of the torch from one legend to another. At least, that's what I got of it.

Back to Hikaru and Misa, I think it would be very cool for the next Macross Saga to show us the story behind this expedition. Of course, some fans won't like this, but I think the majority of fans I know would be in favor of such a tale. Food for thought.

Waitaminute? I know atleast Minmay cameos in Macross 7 on several occasions, but Mac F (apart from flashback sequence & Richard Bilrer's locket)? Which Sheryl concert you talked about & which Mac F episode?

He meant Sharon (Apple)

There is also Gloval on that concert, but for what we know the Minmay portrayed there could be only a fan dressed like her (I doubt she would use the same clothes of 30 years before!)
