So, I was initially excited when Robotech was announced for Blu-ray, because it meant the first time Southern Cross footage would be available in HD.  We'd had Macross on Blu-ray for over a decade (and Mospeada for nearly that long), but Southern Cross barely even got a DVD release in Japan... and it was shovelware at best.

Of course, as soon as "The Macross Saga" BDs came out, it was clear how little Funimation cared about image quality:

MacrossSagaBD.png.211dc828b7e69c7ab8cae0541fe4c83f.png

I mean, compared to what we'd got in Japan ten years earlier...

MacrossBD.png.1d7aa300435065cf3bc87a416239b6b0.png

...Robotech looked as grainy, high-contrast, oversaturated and blown-out as ever. 😒

Comparisons with Mospeada fared no better.

So, with expectations at rock-bottom, I was in no hurry to see "The Robotech Masters" in HD... but my initial curiosity never entirely faded, and I did finally acquire the Blu-rays a few months back.

The masters for "Masters" are just as poor quality as the other series, of course, but are they at least better than the DVDs were?

bluetint.png.dec99c0b8df63a029e6cadccf9204c82.png

As you may be aware, the ADV discs had terrible color timing, giving the whole series a heavy blue tint across the spectrum...

blackdetail.png.df021223f27a15dea585a41ba2b2e625.png

Surprisingly, the color timing is a major improvement on Funimation's HD masters, with more accurate blacks and distinct color definition evident in every frame.

oldEmerson.png.545db0d76ae1144b944312911ed5bab2.png

In fact, there's a whole new magenta tone introduced to the image:

newEmerson.png.2ef38cd6d071a4d668cd1396453688f3.png

It doesn't replace the blue, but rather adds an additional color layer.

Marieafter.png.a28c8b3f4c5b27cc5fc2484334b8c827.png

I thought this difference was profound, and felt compelled to show other Southern Cross fans...

justblue.png.bc8fdcb6b99c3bf8b8e4d6465dedf055.png

...although I realize very few people will actually care. :unknw:

notblue.png.773d5b49d35fedf17373efb623094b6b.png

I mean, they're mastered from the same ancient 16mm prints Tatsunoko provided Harmony Gold four decades ago...

olddamage.png.cebe9170aa3cd8976b7d65f5e6759166.png

...and still show all the same flaws.

stilldamaged.png.a5b6948803cac344bae10730858131a4.png

If anything, physical damage to the film is even more evident in HD.

murky.png.364520d6a8303e501450a840ec59de89.png

Still, the improvement is undeniable.

I thought it was worth sharing, anyway. 🤓

Do the Blu-ray's have the ORIGINAL sound effect audio tracks or the HORRIBLE Robotech Remastered sound effect tracks?

It's all "Robotech Remastered," I'm afraid.  The original mono audio tracks wouldn't sync up with the re-edited episodes anyway.  None of the original commercial "bumpers" are included, either.  😒

Worse yet, the new opening sequences created for the "Remastered" DVDs didn't even get recreated in HD, simply upscaled from the DVD source.  The openings are therefore of substantially lower quality than the episodes themselves. 🤨

@tekering - Thank you for the quick response. I was going to pickup all 3 of them up to get the better video quality if the original sound effects had been used. Bummer.  I might still get "The Masters" - It's pretty cheap on Amazon right now. 50% off I think....making it like $35 or so.

I've actually been building Veritechs/Valkyries in Lego since I was a teen. And as of now, I actually have a Veritech Hovertank fully transformable into all three modes and poseable as a lego moc. But right now, I'm currently in the process of upgrading the design and color scheme to match an actual military design. These pics below show my current militart-style moc-up for the Hovertank MOC, and as of this writing, I've purchase all the parts I need to build it IRL, I'm just missing a few key parts which I'm currently waiting for arrival.
Like my SV-303 Vivasats, I built the Hovertank moc in Bricklink Studio:

Exactly. Every month leads into another year. February will be the next estimated date for release. The Dana Sterling figure might be jumping out of an Easter Egg when released.

sigh.... wish they could have mass produced this... or even a new Lunk figure in this scale... anything...

27 bids and $455 later someone had a new Dana Sterling figure. 🤩

I hope the KC figure is better than the images offered. I am still going to get this figure. It's the "when" am I going to get this figure.

It's the "when", is the part we all share.  For now, here's a Wen we can enjoy in the meantime.

Oddly she was supposed to be French although not in Robotech

Not just French, her character started out as literal Joan of Arc.

You may be interested in how the vintage LS figures scale with Kitz Concept's "Dana Sterling with Southern Cross Amour [sic]," if you're a modeller like me...

vs_LS.jpg.201094a9687227cc8e230bd2f1c3e1fd.jpg

Well, they don't. 😝

While the old model kits are barely 1:12th scale, Kitz Concept's Robotech figures are closer to 1:10th...

bigbowie.jpg.974ac4363d37b4783a6f1543f6f819f3.jpg

...although the male figures were so ridiculously large, Bowie actually scales better with Dana's figure than the armored Jeanne. 🤪

The KC Dana figure looks great against the two models shown. Bowie is oversized for sure. Really liking the KC Dana figure in armor the more I see it. 🤩

3D print files for the Logan are now for sale.

In anticipation of printing my own, I've prepared a painting guide color-matched to the Blu–rays:

Incidentally, Marie's Logan is the only one to survive their debut appearance...  These "cannon fodder" Logans are only briefly onscreen before they're destroyed, and after that Marie's is all we see for the rest of the series. 😅
