Personally, I'm not worried. Word of mouth has been very positive for the show so far and the ratings have been respectable.

Online Word of mouth or actual public word of mouth?

But anyways ep 7 had plenty of feeling like a mid-series show, including the op & ed changes. I'm looking for a much accelerated story to push through whatever they are attempting. The flat out lack of story driving underlying plot is the gapping sekku(spl) of this series. The 3D hasn't changed a wit, still jarring changes between 2D scenes & 3D ones.

Also it looked like quite a close copy of Mai-Hime ep7 with the rescue scene & the magical girl transform BS during the concert/battle. Nearly ROFL'ed outta my chair at how bad it was.

Only REAL neat thing was that they've turned each Macross Fleet into a bunch of mini-nations that show that the NUN is about as worthless as it's original roots (kawa really has a beef with govt doesn't he!). So the situation could easily be considered an anime version of THE CULTURE, except for the fighter planes....

He says something to the extent of "ote something something ni tanomu" in Japanese. It's hard to make out because of all the sound but I think myself and the translator figured it was "hand" and the rest being something about extending help. =P

argghh maybe i heard it wrong then. it could have been "oteyawaraka ni tanomu."

Ok, just watched the Gattai sub episode 7 - which I suprisingly managed to download in the space of one night...

Strange how sometimes it takes me a week and sometimes i takes me a few hours...

Sooooooooooo..........

Ra ra. Fight fight.

I will admit that the new Macross is impressive - particularly its' gerwalk mode. I also think it's a nice touch that Bobby is charged with piloting it in action. He clearly takes over the whole thing - although I kind of prefered the original crew-working together of the original Macross to the "yaargg!" gung-ho Bobby...although I guess it's a POV camera angle problem more than anything else - since obviously Kanjo is still giving the orders and all the bridge bunnies do their various tasks as well.

I still don't understand why Cathy was on the ship. What were her special orders and why was she necessary? I think her presence is somewhat contrived and forced.

Alto is crazy and he's a superior pilot to everyone - even Ozma (who, recall, was "shot down" and wounded in episode 3).

In fact, I'm almost annoyed at Alto's talent. It's nearly super human. He never flew these things before and seems to just have a knack for it. But ok - I guess Max did too when he got behind the Valkyrie ...

The "rescue Luca" plot point was overkill... In fact - Luca should have just BEEN killed. We haven't see the Vajra take any prisoners - and then all of a sudden Luca is taken prisoner and put in an Alien Cacoon....??

I get the feeling this happened only because it allowed Alto to rescue Luca just in time before the Macross blew the mother ship.

Again - somewhat contrived.

But I guess it's equally 'contrived' (am I even spelling that right?) as Sheryl coincidentially meeting Ranka on a street and striking up a friendship...

So I shouldn't complain - since up to now none of the stuff has been "contrived."

The Koning Monster's debut is just beautiful. In fact - Canary suddenly went up on my "Babe-ometer" for the simple fact that she pilots it. She's turning out to be a really sweet, silent, dependable good looking girl who happens to pilot the Monster- all traits I desire in a woman.

I'm a bit confused about Ranka and Sheryl "talking" to eachother in limbo... ?? Tranplants? Telepathy? Imagination?

And how is it that Alto heard her song? Through the ear-ring?

Klan Klan again didn't do much. Which is too bad. She continues to be a cardboard character, a one trick pony. Although the short snipe at Mikhael indicates that the theory about their childhood was correct.

Sooo....

I look forward to Klan Klan getting more development; but somehow I think she's going to remain marginal throughout the series - hopefully I'm wrong.

And did Bobby say "congratulations" to Cathy as a pun - aka "oh she's not scared, just pregnant?"

In any case - I hope Bandai makes us a good new Macross model :) That thing is really great.

But I'm looking forward to episode 8. Let's get back to the personal story.

This battle - all in all - was reminiscent of Macross 7. Our heroes flew in and daringly repelled the enemy and lived happily ever after.

In SDFM TV, even though they were cannon fodder, you had Valkyrie getting toasted all over the place, and Hikaru was shown really feeling the sadness of war weighing down on him.

Here it's like a fashion runway for Valkyrie... everybody gets their dramatic angle and POV shots and really shows their stuff... it's nice - but it's a tad weary...

In Macross Zero, the fight scenes were also few and far between - but when they happened; there were accute consequences (people being killed, shot down, civilians dying etc etc) - you got the sense that this was dangerous and tragic stuff.

This fight scene is a bit gratuitous - although I guess what with so much focus on the characters in the past few scenes, they figured "we need to give Mecha lovers some love" and all in all it was well structured and well executed.

Just...not as thought out as it could have been.

Worse episode thus far.

Saving grace: Planet Dance Formation :)

You gave the mecha porn episode the "worst episode so far" title? Wow. Can't say I disagree with any of your criticisms though. Any time someone can compare a fight scene to something we saw in Mac7 it suddenly loses a whole lot of points in my book. Oh well, I love mech porn so I definitely still enjoyed the episode even with all its contrivances. If I can forgive Alto for some reason being in Ozma's hospital room after he got injured then I guess I could forgive Cathy having a random perilous assignment. Luca being captured struck me as very odd also... I wish he would have just been bobbing about in a debilitated mech or something.

Wait a sec, VFTF1...you accept Basara's skill but you think Alto is too good...?

Yes :)

Hm. Sorry if my "review" came out too negative. By 'worse episode so far' what I really meant is that all of the other ones were better. I could re-watch episode 5 a million times and love it. The opening three episodes taken together are a great ark. Episode 6 has its' memorable moment when Alto and Sheryl say their goodbyes.

Episode 7 is going to be forgotten quickly. It's the "fight scene." That's basically it. I mean - this might be just me - but when I think back to Macross SDF and 7, I don't really remember any of the Mecha battles because they all basically mesh into the same ol' same ol.' Macross 7 makes it bearable because I get to listen to Basara, and SDF TV makes it bearable because all of the Mecha battles are cut mid-way to "go back" to something happening in the city/ship/somewhere else... and that something "else" isn't as overly complicated as Ranka and Sheryl's conversation in the spacial mental plains of aether :)

It's not a bad episode, not horrible - just not as love inspiring as the other ones.

But after episode 7 I think all of the "Cathy is like Misa" speculation I've heard on other boards will stop.

Misa had nerves of steel in battle, was willing to die numerous times for her mission and comrades, and never put out for guys unless it was true love.

Cathy makes Bobby look like a Meldrani Warrior and puts out for Leon.

case closed :)

I just watched Episode 07 for the first time just now.

Just totally perfect. One of the best moments in Macross history. Great mecha porn for sure! I love the new macross ship and that mysterious red valk with the harmonica guy? Trippy. This is probably my favorite frontier episode so far.

Sorry that I have not read through all 59 pages of this thread but can someone answer two questions for me?

1. What is the name of that new macross ship?

2. What is the name of that red valk with the floating guy inside?

Thanks.

I sincerely doubt episode 7 will be forgotten by the majority of Frontier fans and mecha aficionados. It's one of the real stand out episodes of the series so far. In my opinion, it's equal in impact to or perhaps second behind the DeCulture Edition. The action and visuals are stunning.

You specifically mention not remembering the battles in SDF and 7. Well, I agree that in the most part that the battles were forgettable (with a few memorable exceptions). This is probably beacuse for SDF and 7 their was insufficient budget to animate nicely choreographed and well drawn battle scenes.

However, this is not the case with DYRL, Plus, Zero and Frontier, which have beautifully animated and well choreographed battles, that are highly memorable. To this day, people still talk about the battle scenes in DYRL, Plus and Zero and I think the same will hold true for Frontier.

Has anyone noticed the homages yet in episode 8? Not just the Hikaru valk on the school, but the simularities between the mystery pilot of the red valk and Roy Focker? Almost the same hair, both have a thing for instruments apparently (Roy and the guitar, and this kid and the Harmonica) and both are ace pilots? He even sort of looks like Roy. I wonder if he's some sort of clone? I hope not, that would kind of be cheesy...

1. Macross Quarter

2. VF-27

what one is newer and better performance

VF-27 or VF-25 ???

if VF-25 was supposed to be testing before shipping out to UN spacy

then VF-25 is most advance

since VF-27 already used by un spacy of galaxy?

but VF-27 look more advance than VF-25

and brera is a character which shown on opening, but show only shortly in esp 7 and esp 8. He has not been speak a single word. therefore his fighter is more advance.

No one knows yet (excpt the show's creators), so you'll just have to WAFO (Watch And Find Out).

I agree. i don't think the fight scenes will be easily forgotten.

But i do understand VFTF1. I have always believed that it's the significant interpersonal events that are the most memorable in the long run. so with this i agree with VFTV. but that's not to say that the mecha action is completely forgettable. there are some moments which stand out, which are engrained in my memory like clear explosive images. Here are just some of my standouts:

SDFM - the introduction of the FAST-pack super valkyries (and the way Hikaru would get thrown forward with the sudden shift from figher to gerwalk while saving misa's shuttle, and during space war 1).

- SDF Macross final assault into the bodoloza fortress

DYRL - basically... all of it! hehe.

specifics:

- the first battle (shooting long range missiles)

- max v. milia

- milia v. zentrans

- hikaru's final assault using a barrage of missiles and a beercan

MACROSS PLUS - Isamu vs. Guld. I mean, c'mon! was that a dogfight, or was that a dogfight??

MACROSS 0 - Roy Focker's VF-0, the eyetrack and its first transformation!!

and now, with Macross Frontier, the Quarter Pounder attack!! :)

Even though the series was poorly animated, many sequences of SDF Macross were memorable. How can you forget Hikaru VS Britai, Daedalus Attack... even Max VS Milia TV was good.

Well...some of it was poorly animated. Some of it still looks damn good, twenty-six years later.

wow, what an awesome episode. i knew that the Quarter would transform, but it basically flies like a variable fighter! That was so insanely cool...

i also loved Lucas Ghosts, which all had names n stuff.

Kick ass episode I agree. and i still like the VF-25 without all the armour on it.

One thing bothering me, if the Varja ship's gun fired from the same area Luca, Alto, and Brera were in, how were they not vaped?

For the same reason that made the twin barrels of the original Macross not to melt when they were firing. I think. It makes sense... sort of...
