Insanely Cool Minigun Video

Sweet, I have got to get me one of those. Say so long to rush hour traffic! :D

Actually, place a tri mounted triple gatling gun on a pickup, load the ammo on the cab portion and have yourself the biggest lawn mower there is... great in ventilating zombies instead of rush hour.

I knew a fella in Uni that built a minigun that shot bbs. It was a project he worked on for several years while he was going through the engineering program. It was a very cool looking gun, but I never had a chance to see the gun actually fire because the guy couldn't afford the ammunition. He tested it once and didn't really want to spend a ton of money just to fire it again :)

I've seen one in Japan that shoots airsoft BBs....goes for about $5000 though.

oh yeah...

and just in case anybody's curious,

the BB minigun is made by 'Piper Prescision Products" and retails for around 3000? USD & there's a waiting list (last i heard) they don't have 'em in stock. they build 'em after you place your order & pay the 50% down payment !

even as a replica it's a mean piece o' hardware :ph34r::ph34r::ph34r:

if only i could afford one... or if it was legal to buy one from where i live...

Cool!

You should post this one in the Weapons Banter Thread too Graham!

:(

Nobody must read my posts in that thread...

:p

The main thing missing from that movie is the insane noise a real minigun puts out. I'll admit that the wailing guitars they dubbed in will give you a headache just as fast but that high pitched whine coupled with the skull shaking buzz those things make will drive you insane.

why don't they mount those on a humvee in Iraq that would anhlate a building! So is this mini gun different from a hand held mini gun in T2 and Predator?

They do mount them on Hummers on rare occasions. The problem is carry enough ammo. Especially since Ma-deuce (.50 cal M2) does more damage with fewer rounds. The Mk. 19 automatic grenade launcher is even more brutal. Minis are mostly used on aircraft because it allows the gunner to get more rounds on target without the pilot having to slow down or fly straight. Hummers don't really move that fast so the high rate of fire is wasted on them.

I think the gun in T2/Predator is the same as the gun in the video. There's another version called a microgun that fires 5.56 rather than 7.62. The predator gun could have been one of those.

Ma-deuce is preferable for anti-armor targets and not as effective against hordes of unarmored infantry as the Mk. 19 AGL. Hence the prference to have both guns mounted on the same vehicle or seperately in close proximity to each other.

The minis on the hummers do benefit from the huge intimidation factor.

T2/Predator gun is the 7.62mm minigun, as the microgun never got pass the prototype stage. http://world.guns.ru/machine/minigun-e.htm

When I was in the 1st Armored they did indeed mount the GE Minigun on humvees... a few in my divison had them. The two main drawbacks to mounting a minigun on a jeep or humvee were: 1) the ammo and power situation, 1,000 rounds of mini ammo and the battery is about the size of an oil drum. Humvee units in the recon and escort squads that I was involved with needed to not only carry their weapons and ammo in their hummers but also their food, gear, four people and extra fuel. Something the size of an oil drum was prohibative. My unit in particular (Spear 2) was a two humvee recon/truck escort squad and one hummer had a 60 on top and ours had Ma Deuce. I bet my life on big Ma, she can dish some sh!t if you need it and her belts of ammo took more time to fire and took up less space in the back. 2) the main design of a minigun is primarily for air to ground support. When you are in a humvee hauling ass and needing to shoot while you scoot or just laying down suppressing fire to cover your boys while they flank and tackle the M-2 is more than adequate. That reassuring THUMPTHUMPTHUMPTHUMP rate of fire is more than enough to keep your beaten zone on target and still lay down some heat. A minigun is what is known as an "area coverage" weapon. It spews lead at it's target, relying less on accuracy and more on sheer volume of fire. Miniguns are best used on choppers when aim is a luxury. Just watch that video and you will see what I mean... a fast moving assault chopper or a Blackhawk laying down suppresing fire don't really have time to aim, the gunner just holds down the trigger and moves from target to target. All that spewing lead is sure to hit something.

I have a Vietnam doccumentary DVD that has some footage of door gunners with minuiguns just plastering stuff... most of the time when extracting or inserting troops the door gunner with the mini would just hold down the trigger and move the weapon in a circular motion, creating a massive wall of fire that kept the enemy pinned down.

This is easily a myth, thanks to Predator and Terminator 2 movies as well :p. Miniguns cannot be carried by foot. Taken from the site zentrandude provided....

In the year 1987 the movie "Predator" (starring A. Schwarznegger) hit the screens. One of the most impressive scenes was the one where the US Commandos, led by "Dutch" (Schwarznegger), attempted to fight back the alien Predator. One of Commandos was armed with the distinctive weapon, a 6-barreled rotary Minigun, fed from backpack ammo box. This gave the impression that the Miniguns can be used for infantry support. It must be noted, that in this movie a special, blank firing version of the Minigun was sued. The electric motor was powered via cable, hidden in the actor's pants, and the actor had to carry bulletproof vest and protective mask to avoid injuries from the fast and violently ejecting empty cases. Had this gun being fired using real ammunition, the actor would ended lying on his back, being forced off the legs by the violent recoil. The "backpack" ammo capacity, also, could be worth only several seconds of fire. lets calculate: 2 000 rounds of 5.56mm ammo will weight about 25 kg (55 lbs); 2 000 rounds of 7.62mm will weight about 2 times more, making such load almost impossible to carry on foots. yet this load of ammo will worth only 20 or so seconds of fire. Add some powerful batteries to power electrical drive of about 4KWt (4+ horse-power), and the bulk of the gun itself, and you'll see that even the strongest man won't be able to carry this load, less to fire it with any chance to hit, due to extremely powerful recoil.

So there you have it. Unless you wanna break your back....its impossible to fire a minigun from foot.

Btw that video is cool if not for all the repeating scenes. Just curious, there was one that looked like "red sparks" as it fired on something but look like the tracers "bounced". Does the ammo richochet?

Tracers are not meant to penetrate metal or armor, just burn and show you where you are shooting... and thus they just bounce off like rocks. The bullets those minis fire go into those targets like a knife in butter though.

As for the portibility of a minigun the two big issues, ammo and power, have already been discussed. The guns are simply not man-portable. You can hold one in your hands and shoot it like Jesse the Body does in Predator as miniguns are almost recoiless weapons, they produce very little appreciable recoil... the problem is the ammo and power, they are not man-portable.

Thanks for the explanation. So the bullets penetrate but the tracers bounce off. That makes sense.

Almost recoiless? How can something that spits out thousannds of bullets a minute be recoiless?

Anyway I saw one of these B-grade Dolph Lundgren (sp?) movies and saw a somewhat "feasible" minigun. It was a gattling gun with a very short barrel and bullets were fed via a chain like your conventional HMGs. Power could be battery operated...but probably not otherwise it would replace our HMGs by now.

Wow, that's brutal. It looks like that gun can tear anything up. Maybe someday the military will have lasers and such but it's hard to believe anything can be as simple and as effective as chunking a whole lot of hot lead, very quickly.

Another B-movie Deep Rising have the somewhat feasible microgun though it is mag feed and recoiled-operated.

Nitpick again I provided the link, Zentrandude just quote me. :p

IIRC, the guns in Deep Rising were Calico 9mm SMGs (now long out of production) with extra cosmetic bits stuck on the outside to make them look different.

In the movie, I think they said they were Chinese made guns with thousand round magazines.....LOL! In reality, the Calico used either a 50rd or 100rd helical drum magazine.
