RM++ Project: Episode: M28A & B: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Eps. 28 "My Album": http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#SDFM - positively loaded with gems on the behind-the-scenes production of Macross + the lost 2 years novel. Complete: Mechanic: All 01C: VF Masterpieces Seen From Their Development Ancestry (YF-24 Family): http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#all - lots of goodies that I haven't come across before. Alas, the stuff on the YF-30 comes up a bit short.

I don't think anyone has disagreed with that.

I'm not disagreeing with that! I'm just hoping it was a bit more than a vacuous money grab.

There's a topic in Macross Chronicle that indicates that the Tezuka material was included as an homage, too. Was its placement merely for business, or business plus alpha?

Well then, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make in regards to the YF-24 and YF-30 looking similar. If it's referring to design aesthetic and details (which I'm referring to), then ALL of the recent VFs look similar (and by extension, the VF-11 and VF-19, and the VF-17 and VF-22 look similar to each other). If you're referring to general shapes (where the VF-11, VF-19, VF-17 and VF-22 all look different), then despite some similarities between the general shape of the YF-24 and YF-30, the VF-25, 27 and 29 all look different. Despite them having the exact same transformation, the exact same placement of the major components in fighter, gerwalk and battroid forms, and even being officially acknowledged as being variants of the same design. The YF-30 is a new design that just happens to use a similar delta wing shape. As I said before, its more than a different transformation - beyond the placement of the arms in fighter mode and a different torso organization in battroid form, there's that big weapon box, and the canards, which aren't on the YF-24. I agree that parts of the the design of the YF-30 look similar to the YF-24. I also agree that its possible that the YF-30 is based on the YF-24 (in universe explanations indicate that it is - in a technological sense). But I disagree that they are the same or that the YF-30 is a derivative of the YF-24.
-
There are bound to be a lot of similarities as they're all designed by the same person, and the VFs that are designed in the same time period are bound to look more similar.
-
The arms are outside of the engine nacelles, the way it transforms is totally different, and there's a large weapon container between the engine nacelles in fighter/above the back in battroid mode. Quite different! I don't think it has every been revealed what the YF-24/25/27 were based on, but the YF-30 is clearly based on the Sukhoi PAK FA. Especially in the internal weapon bay arrangement and the overall wing shape.

If I'm reading it correctly - the digital edition of Macross The First starts from April. There's no mention of a print edition.

Macross Frontier Movies BD Boxset WITH ENGLISH SUBS!
sketchley replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
In a kind of coincidence, I've been reminded of another anime/manga property that is probably a better comparison to Macross, than Pixar, Ghibli and some of the other "mainstream" entertainment mentioned in this thread. "Hanna Yori Dango" (Boys Over Flowers) - which one of my daughters is binge watching on Lala TV as I type this. The manga (1992-2003) has not only been made into an anime (1996), but has also been made into a pair of live-action movies and a couple of live-action TV series in Japan, AND into live-action TV series in Taiwan, South Korea, China, and the Philippines. In many ways akin to "Maross", "Hana Yori Dango" is very niche. But, unlike "Macross", it has also gone mainstream (in the sense that it has been broadcast during primetime on national TV stations in many countries in East Asia). Is "Hana Yori Dango" or its overseas remakes well known in English speaking countries? How much do the DVDs/Blu-Rays of the Japanese anime cost for it in English speaking countries? Is its familiarity and cost more, less, or about the same as "Macross" in English speaking countries? Amazon Japan has the anime TV series box set at ï¿¥35,532. Are the domestic Macross releases not priced accordingly to that? (By comparison, the live-action box set is ï¿¥13,965. Which provides an interesting contrast on domestic niche anime vs. mainstream live-action price points).- 287 replies

Macross Frontier Movies BD Boxset WITH ENGLISH SUBS!
sketchley replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
Good post, but you just missed one thing: The problem is supply and demand. The manufacturers price things based on how much it costs to make the item vs how many units they've historically sold. Someone on these forums said that even if they printed these DVDs/Blu-Rays in quantities which brought the manufacturing costs down to levels akin to those of, for example, a Harry Potter movie (about 1/2 the price of a Macross release, but still expensive compared to, for example, a North American release), they would still only sell the amount that they do at the current price point. By rights, the tangible media oriented culture should make things cheaper - in a way it does, as the initial purchasers sell the media to used shops, who sell it to secondary purchasers, thus spreading the cost around a bit.- 287 replies

It's really hard to say. There is a bunch of stuff from M3 and VF-X/VF-X2, which was still left out of the timeline (in short, they're reprinting the timeline pretty much as is). The glossary sheets also have not been changed - in the sense of adding entries from the two MF movies and FB7 (all of which were released after the original MC was over). If entries for those anime films are missing, it doesn't bode well for the game M30. I think the only coverage we're going to get is the Goods sheet dedicated to the game that's just been released (it's on my translation to-do list). But, if it's anything like the goods sheets for the aforementioned games or Macross The Musiculture, then it's going to be only the bare minimum of details, at the start of the game. In other words, if you don't play the game (and understand Japanese), you won't know the majority of the plot (especially its conclusion). Which sucks, but isn't a first for Macross. The YF-30 is bound to get its own mechanic sheet. Hopefully we'll get more than that.

Great Mechanics.DX 28 also came out earlier this week. Alas, the only Macross content is a Kawamori-signed 1/60 Arcadia VF-1J 30 Anniversary Edition (for one lucky person who returns the mail-in enclosed in the magazine). That said, if you like mecha, as always, the magazine is packed with it, from anime (Abyss Of Hyperspace, Gundam (original, overview of all the series, Build Fighters, Unicorn eps 7), VOTOMS, Buddy Complex, Nobunaga The Fool (mostly finished CG renders, but some painted hand drawn pieces), Giant Gogu, Girls And Panzer, Broken Blade, Visual Collection of the world of Roman Tomu, Captain Earth, and Danbain) to real world mechanics (US navy (aircraft and wing ordinance), and the Shinkansen).

Just noticed on the Macross Portal site that Macross F is being rebroadcast. Stations are: Tokyo MX, Sun Terebi (yay!), Terebi Aichi, Terebi Hokkaido, TV Q Kyushu Housou, BS11. Check the link for times: http://macross.jp/ (apologies if this is old news that someone already posted.) Darn it. I'm waffling on going or not, as March has been really brutal on the finances (not completely, but partially due to the consumption tax increase. grrr!) Some more linkies on it: Kyoto Marui: https://www.0101.co.jp/stores/guide/storetp/news/00088detail.html?comment_id=71564 Macross Portal (news posted 2014.3.20): http://macross.jp/news/ Macross Fan Club (same picts as the portal site): https://finn-asp.jp/user.cgi?fanclub_id=25&actmode=NewsArticleList&public=1

That... was... awesome! Makes me wonder, though, would this be the only time we get to see a hand-animated YF-30?

Complete: Worldguide 24B: Vajra: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRworldguide/MCRworldguide.php - some minor changes in the original between the two editions, but nothing that affects the translation. RM++ Project: History M 12A: The My-Clone Capture Operation: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRhistory/MCRhistory.php#SDFM - a nice refresher to that arc of the story, but nothing in the parts I translated comes across as a new revelation.

Complete: Mechanic: M Citizen 03A: Civilian Vehicles: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#SDFM - no changes between the editions, and only a few more dotted i's and crossed t's in the translation. RM++ Project: Character: II UN 03B: Amy Lock / Kujou Saori / Natassja Todt: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRcharacter/MCRcharacter.php#MII - the highlight (urm... lowlight?) is some Japanese otaku weirdness that appears to have made it into the series proper...

RM++ Project: Episode: F20A & B: Macross F Eps. 209 "Diamond Crevasse": http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#MF - some interesting points, especially about the possibility of Michele having slept around with other S.M.S. coworkers. That said, I guess we can take this sheet as confirmation that the VF-25A did appear in the TV series. Episode: 7 39A & B: Macross 7 Eps. 39 "The Basara Who Returned": http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#M7 - the highlight of this sheet is the clarification that the Three Star ship (and all the other function ships in the New Macross Class fleets) are produced for each fleet (I was left with some confusion from the sheet on the Three Star, which implied that the Three Star Ship was unique - though in retrospect, that probably could be implying that it was modified during the voyage to become unique. Ah... Japanese, and its tendency to not clearly state the subject!)

2 new Variable Fighter Master File books: VF-22 and VF-1 Squadrons
sketchley replied to cool8or's topic in Collectors
The full name of it is: "VF-1L (Non-Transforming Model)" If you look closely, you can see that it doesn't have a head or head laser machine guns. Skim reading the paragraphs about it: 40 were produced at the start of 2011 in the L5 Station and the Moon Base. It was lightened and has significantly more propellant as it doesn't transform. It's referred to as the "Monkey Valkyrie", and from 2012 they were removed from combat units, converted into unmanned QVF-1, and the majority were used as target drones. -

Exhaustion from the approaching end of the school/work year and preparation for the start of a new one (not to mention the scramble in some industries to meet demand before the tax increase - glad I'm not in construction right now!), which may be contributing to us Japanese residents being too tired to talk about it. -
Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
sketchley replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
I can appreciate your attempts at rationalizing why things are the way they are, but let's not confuse apples and oranges: entertainment products are not the same as the devices used to play them on, and the manufacturers of one are on a completely different scale than the other - the reasons why the major electronic manufacturers suffered is far more complicated than mere close-mindedness and rigidity (the effects of the Leeman Shock come first to mind). Nevertheless, if it was so easy to double their profits, why hasn't anyone already done so? Maybe its not as easy as you think, and maybe the so-called international market is no where near as big as you perceive it to be? It's probably for the best if you keep in mind that the producers of anime and manga do not have the finances to do anything BUT release domestically. History also shows us that they are willing to licence their products to foreign distributors. So, it's more relevant to ask why distributors in your country have stopped, or reduced the amount of anime and manga they import, then putting the blame on companies and individuals that aren't in a position to do that.- 516 replies
