Re: New Macross Class City Ship armour shells: One think to keep in mind is that the shell might be more oriented toward defending the ship from natural phenomenon just as much (if not more so) as enemy attacks. Specifically asteroids (or their fragments, as I think I read somewhere that they blow them up). But yeah, it may be a case of "isn't it cool to..." not quite being practical (in both the senses of defending against enemy attacks and being a place to project the sky from.

2 new Variable Fighter Master File books: VF-22 and VF-1 Squadrons
sketchley replied to cool8or's topic in Collectors
Seconded. The book is an excellent source of "alternate views" of some of the models used in the other books at the time. Even if you're not a modeller, some of the tricks they used are fascinating. (Ie: using nanoblocks as spacers for the +/- wiring for the lighting). -
RM++ Project: Technology: TF 01A: Macross Galaxy Fleet Technology: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRtechnology/MCRtechnology.php - quite interesting. Though I had one thought going through my mind while doing it: who couldn't they have elaborated a bit (on the development of cyborg tech via the BDI System) in MF? Complete: Mechanic: 7 Citizen 03A: City 7 Civilian Vehicles: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#M7 - no changes between the two editions. The translation has been polished up.

2 new Variable Fighter Master File books: VF-22 and VF-1 Squadrons

Correction: Seven (7) books. What Seto said and: VFMF: VF Modelling Manual http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/NEOBK-1351706 Here's the publisher's HP, with all the books released, and their respective ISBN: http://www.sbcr.jp/search.php?w=%E3%83%B4%E3%82%A1%E3%83%AA%E3%82%A2%E3%83%96%E3%83%AB%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%82%A4%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%BB%E3%83%9E%E3%82%B9%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AB -

RM++ Project: Episode: M32A & B: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Eps. 32 "Broken Heart": http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#SDFM - lots of goodies in this one. Especially noteworthy is the supposition of Kamjin's activities between Eps. 27 and 32. Episode: 7 44A & B: Macross 7 Eps. 44 "The Operation That Storms Into A Nightmare": http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#M7 - some goodies herein, too. The extent of the astronomical object related naming used in Operation Stargazer is quite a bit more extensive then I appreciated while watching the series.

Complete! Mechanic: Other 10B: Vanquish Race Related Aircraft: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#Other - provides a nice balance between art, description of the mechanics, and a general sense of the MtR story and/or the characters' roles in it. 出た! (Though, I was half expecting that they'd attach a present binder to #71 (as they sell additional binders in pairs, mate), so I'm a bit disappointed that we only get a binder spine sticker, and have to find another binder...)

Shhh. Don't give them ideas. Nevertheless, it depends on the relationship between the two licensees and the licenser. In this case, the one that would be doing the asking doesn't appear to have a good relationship with the other ones.

Simply put: they can't. (Long story short - it's being released by licensees in a territory outside of that certain entity's jurisdiction)

RM++ Project: Character: F SMS 05B: Kuran Kuran: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRcharacter/MCRcharacter.php#MF - a little bit of the new in the RM, with plenty of the already known. Mechanic: M UN 13A: CVS-101 Prometheus: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#SDFM - quite a rearrangement of the two original sheets. That said, its quite sparse on new info, and the annoying "under investigation" markers apparently haven't had their investigation completed...

RM++ Project: Mechanic: F NUNS 03A VF-171EX Nightmare Plus EX: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#MF - a bunch of major changes - namely the removal of half the content! Presumably they're going to produce a sheet dedicated to Luca's RVF-171EX and the normal VF-171EX. Nevertheless, the rewritten GERWALK Mode section confirms that the VF-171 and VF-171EX don't have elbow beam guns (no word on forearm beam guns) and doesn't have the VF-17's High-Speed Combat Form. Some other observations: - there will be a total of 8 episode sheets for the DYRL movie (unlike the total 6 for the first (and presumably second) Frontier movie). - #67 has a second sheet for Macross The Ride, covering all the main VFs and the new VF-11 cockpit penned by Kazutaka Miyatake. I doubt that we'll get another sheet for the minor VFs that appeared, but anything's possible at this point. That's the VF-1 from the Technology 01Q page foldout, which has a VF development genealogy chart on the reverse. That said, the VF-1 sells. With the MC, probably more so than anything else they can put on the cover.

I think if you want this magazine to thrive, you have to find a niche for it - specifically offering things that are both relevant, and not readily available (or making them conveniently available in one location). As was mentioned earlier in this thread, having a section devoted to news that's buried in threads in MW would be a major drawing point for a lot of Macross fans (an excellent idea mentioned earlier). Sections on RPG stats, fanfics and translations of old magazine articles are more niche, but are also strong points to build a regular readership around. Also, I've noticed that you're asking a lot of questions about what software/hardware/whatever-ware one needs to do a fanzine. IMHO, that's getting in the way of making the fanzine. I'd like to remind you of the "Robert Rodriguez List": "make a list of things you have access to like cool cars, apartments, horses, samurai swords and so on, and then write the screenplay based on that list". Although that list is geared toward making films, it's just as valid for making a fanzine (replace the list with information for articles, desktop publishing software, and hosting). At this point, the biggest challenge isn't what software you need to get, but what the content of the fanzine will be (and part of that includes whittling down the big dreams to what is possible for one person (for the time being) to produce), and what content you have access to. Once the project starts moving, I'm sure that more people will offer articles/fanzines/stats/translations and/or production assistance, but until then, I'm certain that there are people waiting to see what this looks like before committing to help - and that brings us to reality: right now, the fanzine has a production staff of one, and you have to base your expectations around that cold hard truth. Apologies. Once more my post has become rather long. Nevertheless, it comes from experience. In the late 1990's, I was the editor for an anime club (JAC Vic), and created and published a fanzine for the club (The SDF [super Deformed Fanzine]) with similar big dreams.

Mini-review: It's the first chapter of the "Tales Of South Ataria Island". There are some changes - the colourization of the first few pages and the last couple would be the biggest. But there are also a couple of new pages and expanded pages - in short, I found the action being described a bit more clearly, and the changed framing on some of the panels really improved things (though I'm not sold on the forced colourization). Pros: it loaded promptly, with no waiting "in line" (like I experienced with the online Nico-nico successor to Newtype Ace). Cons: it's a reprint of what we've already seen, and it sorely needs a zoom option (or need it located in a more obvious place).

RM++ Project: Episode: Ai 01E,F: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Do You Remember Love?: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#DYRL - some very interesting points on the changes between the TV series and movie, and how the movie is perceived in the greater Macross world. Episode: 7 43A & B: Macross 7 Eps. 43 "Respective Partings": http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRepisode/MCRepisode.php#M7 - an interesting tie-in to FB7 (and how the events in M7 are generally perceived in the Macross world), and the commentary underlines the excellent thematic directing of this episode.

Seto's mostly correct, and so are you.* Yes, they do possess** other people, but they still inhabit their own bodies. Take Gigiru as an example: his Protodevilun body remains in stasis on the 4th planet of the Varohta star system, and he operates Autre Mauer as himself from remote (a kind of remote control, if you will). * More specifically: The Protoculture created the Evhil series Living Body Weapons, which were taken over by Energy Beings from the Sub-Universe, thus becoming the Protodevilun. - Seto has the general idea correct, and so do you, but you both need to be more careful with your nomenclature... does anyone read my (and others') translations on the subject??? ** Perhaps remote control is a better way to describe what's going on than the literal possession.

RM++ Project: Mechanic: Ai Meltrandi 03A: Meltrandi Warships: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#DYRL - most interesting is the choice of terminology in the RM: specifically "the base of". In one sense, it could be interpreted as the same as the SDF:M chronology: the ASS-1 became the SDF-1. Another way to interpret it is that the ship design was copied, and the SDF-1 in the movie is a completely human created ship. Oh, so deliciously vague! Complete: Mechanic: M Citizen 03B: Civilian Vehicles: http://sketchleytranslation.host-ed.me/MCRmechanic/MCRmechanic.php#SDFM - only a few minor changes between the two editions.

Non-Japanese human characters in the Macross franchise?
sketchley replied to Saruta's topic in Movies and TV Series
No worries. It's usually when we rush our posts, unintended bias and other stuff creeps in. Nevertheless, thank you for your refined explanation, as it highlighted how similar a mindset we have. Addressing the larger language topic: I don't think taking what we 'hear' on screen (or even see!) should be taken as fact. Due to in-universe events, they people are probably speaking a generalized dialect of English which, the present-day International English would be the closest approximation, tossed in with a healthy dose of Zentraadi words, Otec jargon, and slang related to in-universe events. As for ethnicity et al, Saito said it best earlier: those concepts cease to exist. Another way to look at it is with the Star Wars and Star Trek examples: humans are identified by their planet of origin, not planetary region or ethnicity. Yes, some characters are (the same is true for Macross), but most are human (same), Federation ({Earth/New} Unified Government) and so on. [i'm sure this analogy falls apart with scrutiny. Ignore that, and use it for the broad strokes, thanks]. -

??? Many English speaking countries use the metric system. Canada, Australia, New Zelealand, the UK... just to name the big ones. -
Note for those picking this magazine up at bookstores: #67 is indicated as being released on MONDAY, Apr. 28.
