Newtype Vol.16 is out, and... no Macross content! Grrr... Well, there's some, but it's incredibly paltry. 1 pg Banpresto/Craneking ad on the back of the front cover featuring (mainly) Ranka and Sheryl figurines, and... NA Anime Station (all the following news in 1/6 a page...): - Macross Super Dimensional Seminar: on air until 12.24 (Tokyo MX) or 01.04 (BS11). - Game: Macross 30: recycled info - Macross 7 Blu-ray Box: Complete Fire 2: recycled info - Macross Chojikuu tenran-kai: now this is exciting (for me): cause the venue is 5 minutes walk from my house! Bwahahahaha! Ahem, I was wondering where they were going to house the 1/1 VF-25 GERWALK, and apparently it will be in Hirapa: http://www.chojikuutenrankai.com/ The stamp rally looks very travel intensive (#1: event venue, #2 Nyan Cafe (in Hirapa), #3 Animate Nipponbashi (!?! within Osaka city), #4 Animate Hirakata (almost walking distance from Hirapa), and #5 Animate Kyoto (!?! within Kyoto city). For Macross content... that's it! No manga. No Macross Ace Plus. No Goods News... The only good news is for next issue: Macross the First Macross FF

I don't have a C sheet. Maybe what happened to it is the same as the M7 civilian #09 to 13 sheets? Planned, but not enough space?

Star Trek Into Darkness, in theaters May 17, 2013
sketchley replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Now this (trying to alert one's planet about a future disaster) would have been a much more engaging movie. Sure, it might have shades of the film "Déjà Vu" (2006, Denzel Washington), but at least it would be firing on more cylinders than just the characters one - and the movie would have actually been about something...- 1020 replies

And depending on what parts of Macross are your thing, up to 95% of it is essential. Compare it to the Gold Book right next to it - only about 2/3 of that book is understandable for the non-fluent in Japanese (interviews, etc.). Another 1/3 amounts to screen grabs and a visual comic of the movie...

Star Trek Into Darkness, in theaters May 17, 2013
sketchley replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I haven't read the comic, but I gleaned a lot of information =that should have been in the movie= from the Wikipedia article. Namely the Borg modifications to Nero's ships and the clarification of exactly what Spock was attempting to do. Don't get me wrong, I like the characterization in the movie (which is probably why I don't mind seeing it again), but the other aspects of the movie? Forgettable, at best. Alas, the movie isn't that great, because it's not really about something. (Eg: ST2 was about aging, death and new life. That revenge thing? Sure, it was the movie's plot, but that's not what the movie was REALLY about.)- 1020 replies

Are you referring to the Japanese market, or overseas? If it's Japan's, then there's a reason why developers here are focusing on portable game players, and not ones that are chained to a TV at one's residence: it's where the lion's share of the market is. Period.

so... a subbed version of the DYRL 30th anniversary BR?
sketchley replied to Skull Leader's topic in Movies and TV Series
Studio Ghibli is in-bed with Disney. They're definitely the exception, not the rule. Except for the big ugly one concerning the title of the franchise. Ie: it's not "Zero", but "Macross Zero", etc.. Don't get me wrong, a subbed version would be nice. But aside from the language issues, how many of these companies even bother with Japanese subtitles for the domestic market? (A point that, if memory serves, Tochiro brought up before.) -
Which is a fallacy for propaganda purposes!

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time II: The Quickening
sketchley replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Not just that. See: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=36946&view=findpost&p=1000823 I also feel like adding: it's through and through a Stanley Kubrick film. Steven Spielberg totally captured Kubrick's recurring theme of dehumanization. This time, to the point that the robot's that supplant humans are more human (in the sense of humanism) than the people. The ending is especially important for conveying that point. But yeah, if that doesn't work, do what Taksraven said.- 854 replies

Quid pro quo: why can't Hollywood make movies in Japanese? They have the ability to add Japanese to a setting, but won't make it in Japanese. (Ex: Blade Runner, Alien 3).

I full agree that we have to wait and see how they look in action. The main reason being: what context are we going to see them moving? Will they be in scenes chockablock full of detail, where their big, boxy shapes will make them visually obvious and able for us viewers to follow the action? Do their opponents have a completely different design theme? (ie round shaped enemies vs square shaped heroes?) That said, I'm not really that excited about this movie overall (I've seen one too many summer blockbusters), and the static designs look rather pedestrian...

Fixed. It's only when one starts to go outside of ones language family group that one starts to encounter truly different sounds. That said, there are some people in every group who find it incredibly easy to pick up foreign languages/pronunciation, just like there are others who can't be bothered...

If memory serves, there were articles to that effect in Great Mechanics.DX and Macross Chronicles; one of the Worldguide and/or Technology sheets.

My guess (and it's only speculation at this point), is that the YF-29B is the YF-29 without all the expensive fold quartz additions. In other words, it's got all the hardware you want, just none of the fold wave reception, amplification and broadcasting capabilities.

Skyfall, the next James Bond 007 Film
sketchley replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
As it's hard to come up with a top 5 (though the #1 would probably go to one of the ones directed by Martin Campbell or Irvin Kershner), I'm going to post my bottom 3: 3. Die Another Day (the only Bond movie I've felt has overstayed its welcome by the time the closing act starts) 2. Quantum of Solace (too much to mention. In short: Bond is fantasy. This one came up lacking.) 1. For Your Eyes Only (surprisingly, it's not because it's a bad film per se. It's just a completely forgettable one. Too much been there, done that, for one film?)- 251 replies

Dengeki Hobby January 2013 General thoughts: this is one of those issues that I haven't been able to put down after purchasing. It's been awhile... The best thing about it is the Cosmo Falcon kit that comes with the magazine. But that wasn't the only surprise... Macross content: after last month's noticeable slowdown in Macross news (leading me to suspect that the 30th Anniversary events were over), they've picked up again, this month: VF-1X++ Hakuna Custom 3 pages on a fully transformable Yamato 1/60 conversion. That's right, Yamato. The immediately obvious changes are the custom head and paint. A more closer look reveals things such as the shortened vertical stabilizers. Sadly, a bunch of the option parts on the nose, leading edge of the main wings and engine nacelle packs are missing... a compromise due to it being fully transformable? You gotta luv the modeller, KuWa, as he posts his work on the web: VF-1X++ dorsal skin: http://frameout.web.fc2.com/ VF-1X++ prepainted + notes on converting/modifying your Yamato VF-1: http://www.yamato-toys.com/dev/cont_109/04.html the Cosmo Falcon that comes with the magazine: http://frameout.blog67.fc2.com/blog-entry-475.html Yamato 1/60 fully transformable VF-4G Lightning III 1 page on the toy in all it's glory. In addition to the three modes, there are a bunch of pictures illustrating the mechanics of the transformation. In short, the more I see of this toy, the more impressed I am of the engineering that went into it. Bandai Hobby 1/72 fully transformable VF-1 Valkyrie 1 page on the fighter mode mock-up and Kawamori-san going over the details with a Bandai Hobby staff member. the blog: http://bandai-hobby.net/site/character_macross.html Interestingly, both pictures on the blog AND 1 of the pictures in the mag have the Dengeki Hobby book being used as a reference! Is it a sign of how good the book is? Or merely a reflection that it's a handy pocket-size? Chelsea's and Hakuna's crafts are to be sold at the Hobby Megafan Shop 1/2 page detailing the mini VF-1X++ and VF-19ACTIVE. Both retail for ¥1,575 Remainder of the page is: Hasegawa 1/72 VF-11B Super Thunderbolt. Now on sale. ¥3,570 Hasegawa 1/72 VF-25 Messiah (tentative). Planned summer release. Completed: Great Mechanics.DX 12: MPM Vol.1 VF Option Packs: http://sketchleystat...l1fastPacks.php Though it's thin on specific details, it's a handy overview, and provides some new insight (the YF-19 -> VF-19 changes comes first to mind).
