Rewatching 7...Still hate Chie Kajiura's singing.
Mr March replied to Raptor's topic in Movies and TV Series
It is somewhat pleasing - but also eerily alarming - to see the pendulum of Macross World has swung far from the old unbridled hate threads for Macross 7 such that even just sardonically criticizing one vocal performer in the show is met with considerable resistance on the forum. That being said, I'd have to agree with Raptor criticizing Chie Kajiura. If one divorces from the animation and "Macross" label, Chie Kajiura singing was not anything I'd want to celebrate. On the show's soundtrack she sounded like the Japanese equivalent of an American Idol mid-level contestant, or Avril Lavinge trying desperately to convince you she's awesome. There is some talent and ability, but not of a level I'd categorize as memorable. In her defense, I will say that she wasn't exactly a bad marriage for the bubblegum pop soundtrack, which I also didn't find all that memorable either. Where I'd disagree is a large disparity between Chie Kajiura and Megumi Nakajima. While the Frontier gal might be better, I wouldn't place her far from the former. At least if all we're talking about is technical proficiency, trying to put aside the music itself. IMO, Mari IIjima and May'n have chops above Kajiura and Nakajima. But again, the vocal ability of the SDF Macross and Macross Frontier idols probably means more to me simply because the productions and music are much more engaging. I'd also debate that Kajiura wasn't a good match for Mylene as a character or for the show. I felt her amateur voice was a good match for the band she was in, the age she was at and the character arc she was written. Mylene was kinda a backup sort of band member and I think the Macross 7 series was trying to write her as growing into adulthood somewhat awkwardly without any grace or consistency. The vocal performance reflects those themes, even if the result doesn't make for the most accomplished or entertaining result from the perspective of the audience watching Macross 7.- 80 replies

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!
Mr March replied to Keith's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I was really busy during Christmas and missed a bunch of news about everything, but apparently Wasteland 2 has some kind of early access/beta going on as of mid-December last year. Perhaps there's some old-timers like me still around but for most everyone else who probably doesn't know Wasteland was one the earliest and best Post-Apocalyptic RPGs for the computer way back in 1988. From there, business and design lead Brian Fargo and his crew went on to create Fallout and it's sequel. A successful crowd-funding campaign was done for the sequel to Wasteland, which appears to return to many themes of the original low-res classic but also incorporates a lot from Fallout/Fallout 2. I'm not much for betas or pre-releases unless it's something entirely new, but I am very excited for Wasteland 2, especially the return to the isometric-style gameplay that defined the first Fallout games. http://store.steampowered.com/app/240760/ Anyone other old-school CRPG fans as interested in this as me? If not, you can all die in a fire- 6876 replies

I figured there would be at least a few folks here that knew of her, but don't think I've ever seen it mentioned. On the rare occasion I encounter something I like that happens to have a very 1980's bent (the film "Drive", the music of "La Roux", the video games "Dust: An Elysian Tail" and "Fez", etc) I try to make mention of it because I know there are more than a few folks here at MW that take love of 80's pop culture to an extreme I dare not ponder Despite not being a favorite band of mine, I appreciate Daft Punk's ability to produce a track or two every few years that I enjoy. I'm also a big fan of The Strokes, so it's fun to see lead singer Julian Casablancas with Daft Punk on this track, even autotuned (though thankfully done deliberately for style rather enhancement). Good track!

Finally made time to listen The Black Keys album El Camino, James Blake's album Overgrown and La Roux's debut album. I figure the 1980's-obsessed crowd here might appreciate something like La Roux, so here's a single from her album:

Yeah, this is insanely good work. Even in these early renders you can see this is going to be something extraordinairy.

So out of the loop on Macross merchandise that I didn't even know this was happening/happened. Loved the video, a fine fan farewell to a great Japanese toy company.- 1147 replies

The Steam Machine is a PC, so you'll be able to plug in any USB device, controller or otherwise. The only stumbling block will be the software side, drivers, support, etc. But again, the whole system is designed to be open, so there will be thousands building software for all kinds of Steam OS applications. If it takes off. But I'd say that if people treat the Steam Machine as just another "gaming console" to be used with an existing X-Box or PS controller, the whole point of the system is being missed. The Steam Controller is designed for PC gaming and you're not going to play League of Legends, DOTA 2, Starcraft or Civilization with traditional gamepad. It's a PC for the living room, not a fourth playable faction for the Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo war

It's always a pleasure to help you 3D modelers. Providing reference is one of the main reasons for my website. I'd love to host pictures of your completed work in the For Fans Only section of my site. I hope your Monster model goes well!

Zinjabable At least Jay's website is still up, so he can be contacted. But it looks like his photography and concept art career took off, so he's likely busy. Yes the life of the craftsman is to revise over and over again. I love the work, but sometimes it can be a big pain logan_4600 I for one look forward to your many "mistakes" and gives you a warm welcome to the ranks of the amateur artists. Your work so far is amazing. My fan-member gets hard at the thought of your next SDF-1 Macross picture

Alright fellas, here's your chance to see what you missed... Gravity Returning to Theatres http://www.slashfilm.com/gravity-returning-to-theaters-this-weekend/ Don't miss it this time!

Hehehe, oh you're going to have lots of fun learning while doing. Growing in skill and understanding, then looking at everything "wrong" with what you built before and wanting to rebuild it all over again to get it "right". And then again. And again. And maybe again too. I think my current record is rebuilding a colored piece of line art - from first attempt 7 years ago until now - a total of 9 times! Get used to frustration the likes of which you cannot know

Yes, that's the one. Jay-Lew's SDF-1 Macross model still remains my favorite fan interpretation of the classic design in a 3D model. There have been better finished and more accurate 3D models of the SDF-1, but Jay's was by far the most interesting. It's a shame he never finished it. Or maybe he did finish it and he's just not around here anymore. Either way, I wish there was more. Phenomenal work.

I'll post every piece of line art I have for the HWR-00 Destroid Monster Mk II in this thread. If you want larger versions of any of the following line art pictures, just let me know.

Me too. For the record, the best CG model of the SDF-1 Macross I ever saw was a stylized version made by a fella on these forums like 8 years ago. Still have some of those images saved. So feel free to work with inspiration. It'll pay off I'm willing to bet.

Yes he has, but you're not allowed to see them until I update my website

I don't usually recommend people go to see most films in 3D, but Gravity was an exception. It was a blast in IMAX 3D and is pretty much the benchmark for what 3D should be on the big screen (at least as 3D exists with current technology). I understand most people don't think much of 3D and the studio's only have themselves to blame for souring the public with bad 3D movies and post-conversions to 3D. But in the case of Gravity, if you get the chance, don't miss it on IMAX 3D. An amazing experience. About sound in space, I would agree that it is a great way to inject more nuance and life into the generally pedestrian science fiction film genre. But remember there can be sound in space, so long as there is a medium (however brief) through which vibration can travel to those able to listen. Astronauts have described how close proximity explosions and accidents in space have created sound within their spacecraft/space stations that they could hear. But more than a compelling dramatic tool, I feel the absence of sound in space can teach a lot of people raised on sci-fi entertainment with sound in space what a vacuum is really like.

I love it. For some reason it reminds me of Ghost World.

That mecha second from the left after the Monster is from the animated TV series Genesis Climber Mospeada. The mecha is called the AB-01 Tread. The MAHQ has a profile on it that can be found at http://www.mahq.net/mecha/mospeada/mospeada/ab-01.htm. The other non-Macross mecha (dear gawd, these drawings of the Glaug, Reguld and N-Ger/Q-Rau's look awful!) are either designs from Mospeada or the animated TV series The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross. I can't do a line up since I'm not familiar with Mospeada or Southern Cross, I only recognize them as mecha from those franchises. I'm sure one of our other resident fans of those shows can jump in to help.

Robotech x Voltron crossover... what the...I don't even...
Mr March replied to Tochiro's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Dear gawd...I've built better coloring/shading than this for my website and I'm nowhere near as talented as some of the amatuer artists found on DeviantArt. This is a real shame to see being sold. -
troyness Yes, some of the fights were elaborate, out-of-your-way battles. But the film also showcased a large amount of amazing quick, insta-kill fights born out of desperation and necessity of the characters involved, especially in the first two-thirds of the film. This second trailer might be even better than the first. Very excited here.

Oh, you've no idea the awesome of this next update to my website. Only a few more months and it'll be released As promised, here is the version of the Tomahawk Schematics that I have. If you need a larger version, just let me know.
