    UPDATE: just waiting on decals for my TOS Enterprise. Shuttle is nearly done, taking a break from that. Meantime, the 1/48 Top Gun Tomcat Kit is cursed. I applied the decals, then scratched the canopy. Okay, no big deal, protected the decals on the nose and polished the canopy using sanding films I normally do and it came out fine. So I then cleaned up the canopy protection... Managed to wreck the damned decals on the nose AND the wings. I didn't even bother getting mad; I just put the model on the shelf in the closet, closed the door, and started banging my head against a brick wall. I just don't even know now... even giving up doesn't equate to my level of despair on this one. Maverick and Goose must friggin' hate me or something. Not looking for advice or anything; I think I'm beyond that point here. If anyone needs me, I'm going to go find a nice deep coal mine or something to crawl into and take the elevator down.

    Su-27 (technically J-16, if we're being pedantic). MiG-27 is a totally different (and far uglier, IMHO) beast.

    Just checked tracking on mine; it's currently in LA, presumably at LAX waiting for transport. I figure it'll reach me around Thursday. Appreciate the pics, man. Having watched a transformation vid for this thing, it's going to be a slow, meticulous process the first time I transform it. Once I get it in bot mode, I probably won't touch it again. I appreciate the engineering that goes into these complex toys and the toys themselves for the wonders that they are, but there's little fun to be had when transforming the majority of them for fear of breaking something, missing a step, or getting it something wrong and fouling the whole process up. The hard part will be deciding whether to keep it in bot mode, or tackle the transformation once again to get it back in jet mode, as I've long wished for a decent MiG-27 transformer and this is so much better than I ever expected it could be. Knowing myself, it'll just stay in bot mode, but the satisfaction of knowing it can be turned into this gorgeous plane will remain and keep me contented.

    So... I have a weird bit of esoterica that's been vexing me and I'm wondering if one of the other contributors here might help. In Macross the Ride, Ukyo Kodachi seems to have indulged himself in giving any reasonably plot-relevant ship or mecha a Meaningful Name. Most of them are reasonably straightforward. The YF-27-3/YF-27-5's name and the name of Wisla & Oder were a bit of a struggle because they're misspelled. The one that's still got me stumped is the Macross Galaxy fleet's Riviera-class resort ship... its name エヴナ is either Evna or Evuna. I cannot find a satisfactory reference, either to a place or story, that fits this one, aside from the Town of Evna from L. Frank Baum's Oz series, which doesn't seem to have thematic relevance. Can anyone think of any places or people (from fiction) named "Evna" or "Evuna"?

    So the post office dropped a monster on my doorstep today. I'd been waiting on my pair of Su-27s from ShowZ, and when I saw the size of the box, I guessed they must have doubled them up. No. This thing is huge. I happened to have my Jetfires handy to pose for comparison in both modes, and they're not too far off in scale, but it just emphasizes exactly how big a plane this is. Comes in at near 16 inches long, so roughly 1/54 scale. Given the sizes of the previous ones, I did not expect something this big at all. Maybe I'll transform him.. but I might wait for the second to arrive before I mess with it. The manual is just as much a monster as the plane, so I expect it might take an hour or two to get through on a first run. Just in general though, I think a new bar has been set for plastic airplane origami. Looking over the jet, I think the only corner they cut was that the belly is a bit thicker than it should be, but it's completely hidden unless you view it head-on. I'm no expert on the Su-27, so the proportions of the nose might be a bit inflated, but without comparing it directly, I'm really not seeing anything stick out as being off-model.

    Thanks! It's been a really fun build and I'm enjoying it so far and really pushing myself with new techniques. I had a fair amount to time today to start detail painting in the wheel wells and started the oil paint weathering in earnest. I'm experimenting with adding some exhaust streaking from the RCS thrusters and I'm really liking how it's working. I'll definitely keep posting updates. Before: After:

    Seems they got some actors, but who’s doing the soundtrack. If they don’t do an iconic soundtrack then it will just be a reboot, but if they can get something that’s truly special it will make for a memorable movie

    So... that's a bit of a rabbit hole in its own right since there are seemingly two separate Marine Corps. When the then-newly inaugurated Earth Unification (UN) Government officially commenced business in February 2001, one of the first things they did was to establish the Earth UN Forces to reorganize and integrate the various national militaries of Earth into a cohesive fighting force for planetary defense. The Earth UN Forces originally had four branches: the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Marine Corps. These four conventional forces were exactly what you'd expect given their names. We know relatively little about them, as the story doesn't focus on any of them directly and they show up infrequently in the print lore. However, we know a few details like that the Daedalus-class was developed in large part with the Marines in mind (originally the US Marines who formed the backbone of the UN Marines) and that they had an interest in VFs as a replacement for aging VTOL/STOVL jets used in close air support to have their own VF-0 variant (the VF-0C). The fifth branch, the Spacy (space force) was added two years later in 2003. After the First Space War, things get a little bit weirder and a little bit harder to explain. The New Unification Government takes over for the destroyed Earth Unification Government in 2010 and at some unknown date in 2010 or early 2011 someone in power makes the decision to have portions of the Spacy spun off as separate branches of service: the Spacy Air Force and Spacy Marine Corps. Exactly what the organizational division of responsibilities there is is unclear at best. As far as I am aware, they have never been properly explained. They first appear in the This is Animation book for the Macross Plus OVA in Variable Fighters Aero Report, with the Spacy Air Force subsequently appearing in Macross Plus and the Spacy Marine Corps in Macross Frontier and Macross Delta. The Spacy Marine Corps seems obvious enough. They've got to be ground forces and related air support attached to/transported by the Spacy's fleets. The Spacy Air Force makes less sense. Presumably they're the non-carrier aviation arm of the space forces... but that seems to leave their role overlapping with that of the Air Force, since the one base of theirs that we see directly is planetside. With respect to the "why do they still exist?" part... if Isamu's service record is any indication, there is a fair amount of inter-service mobility (more aligned to the JSDF) in the New UN Forces and there is still some semblance of a blue water navy left given that Isamu serves a brief stint about the UNN Enterprise in 2035.

    The moment he's up for preorder I'm in. I managed to successfully find a Slingshot at the local target, last one, both it and the walmart are just crawling with SS86 and SSOne Bee's and Que's and Devestation Optimus. I rather like Slingshot....his vehicle mode cleans up really well but then in robot mode he's got big legs that'll take up a great amount of space in the cabinet until the rest of the figures are released. So that's 2 down, 3 to go.

    When they say “marines” in Macross, are they meaning strictly seaborne troops, delivered by the UN Navy? Or are they including spaceborne forces? If meaning the former, why would they even still exist?
