No. SALAMANDER was awesome.

Life Force was hacking the godawful Gradius power-up bar into a game that was never designed for it, and possibly qualifies as a crime against humanity. Konami should be ashamed of themselves.

Actually that's partially incorrect, and partially correct depending on what we're talking about. if we're talking arcades, started from Super Street Fighter IV offered free on 360 then, it's incorrect.

the original Lifeforce (version d) for US/Europe in the arcades had the same power up scheme as salamander (version J).

Konami later introduced an enhanced version w/ the gradius power up bar in Japan under the american name lifeforce which the nes verision followed. this is Robotech being launched in Japan. lol

I WAS thinking arcades. And just using J names exclusively.

I forgot this one gets "complicated.'

US arcade Life Force = Salamander.

Japanese arcade Life Force = Robotech Gradius.

US NES Life Force = Robotech Toonami Edit Gradius.

Parodius = Space Gandam V.

There we go.

Come to Denver. We have an adult only arcade with booze. Dave and Busters is what it's called. It's huge.

Thanks for the offer Ben but I reside overseas. Yes SALAMANDER is my favorite game of all time, the MSX, Arcade and the PC Engine. Here are some custom covers I made :

SALAMANDER Famicom/ NES.

SALAMANDER Commodore 64.

SALAMANDER PC Engine.

JBO its good to have you back.

I have no Idea what you guys are talking about anymore.

Ha ha ha. Well I would tell you to check out an old game from Nintendo Entertainment System called Lifeforce, a space-fighter shoot-em-up. These other guys would call me crazy and recommend an arcade game about amphibians. :p

Anyone get Rise of the Dark Spark? Since high moon want involved, I'm hesitant to pick it up.

I'm hesitating. I loved War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron. But, despite being mechanically similar, I thought that Dark of the Moon (another High Moon product) was short, dull, and even a little frustrating on Soundwave's level. I kind of want to hear a review.

So, I broke down and bought Rise of the Dark Spark. Now, I bought it on Steam, since shooters feel much more natural to me with a mouse and keyboard than they do a controller.

Big mistake.

It's clearly a half-hearted console port. Included are the bare minimum graphics settings and zero ability to remap keyboard bindings. The UI uses Xbox icons for buttons, whether you have an Xbox controller plugged in or not. Sometimes, it's not too bad... in the first mission tutorials, a popup will tell you to "Push A or space to jump", with "A" being a green button icon, while "space" is merely spelled out (not even bolded). Other times, it's useless, like when the game wants you to focus your attention on something, and a popup comes up that says something like "Push <| to view" where "<|" is the icon for the back button on the Xbox controller. It never even bothers to tell you the keyboard binding (it's tab, by the way). It's the same in the menus. For example, when selecting a weapon at a weapon station, it will tell you that A is equip. What do you do if you're using a mouse and keyboard? You click the A icon.

I don't know if the PS4/Xbox One versions are any better, but Rise of the Dark Spark is NOT looking particularly next-gen on PC. From the limited graphics options, I basically have the game set to the highest quality. In game, RotDS looks about the same as War for Cybertron/Fall of Cybertron. Not great, but ok. The cutscenes are terrible, though. I've seen less jaggies in PS2 games.

As for the gameplay, I've finished about four chapters. The game is clearly using Fall of Cybertron as a base, where the campaign alternates between Autobots and Decepticons, and you play a set character. Different characters have different abilities. For example, Soundwave sends out Laserbeak, who acts as an attack drone, and Sideswipe has the same grapple Jazz had in FoC. The weapons are the same as FoC, although the upgrade system works differently. Instead of collecting tech bits and buying upgrades, you complete challenges to earn gearboxes. Gearboxes contain techs, unlock weapons, upgrades for weapons, and characters for the Escalation mode. Speaking of characters, I get that RotDS is supposed to be a movie tie-in, and even features Age of Extinction Optimus on the cover. That said, you play as Age of Extinction Drift for the first chapter, then the game switches the Cybertron series characters for at least the next three chapters. Looking at the characters in Escalation, the Cybertron characters outnumber the movie characters probably three or four to one, so the game definitely seems more like a Cybertron sequel with some movie bits tacked on.

That said, it's not as simple to say that if you liked the Cybertron games, you'll definitely like Rise of the Dark Spark. Compared to Fall of Cybertron, RotDS feels a little soulless, with more straightforward level design that more or less escorts you from one fight to another. I'd say if you're really fan of the series, you'll probably get some enjoyment out of it as long as you're aware that it's not the best in the series, and you stick with a console version. But if you thought FoC was just ok and were hoping for something more with RotDS, you might want to take a pass.

EDIT: One more thing, the game doesn't support Steam Cloud. I don't know how big of a deal that is for most of you guys, but if you read the Computers and Electronics thread, you probably know that I have a nice custom built desktop and an MSI gaming laptop. I've been playing on my desktop, but I'm leaving tomorrow to visit some friends in DC and was planning to take my laptop.

I LOVED WfC and FoC, but I'm hesitant to pick up Dark Spark. Mike, you and a lot of others on the steam community forums aren't giving me very good vibes about this game. I liked the High Moon games, but I don't think it's worth the 50 bucks right now. Might just hold off and pick it up later down the road, maybe a year or two from now on a steam sale.

I haven't looked here in awhile. I can't believe people were so bent out of shape about Life Force. It's a great game from my perspective.

Speaking of great games, Shovel Knight just released today and it's a pretty fun modern imagining of old-style side-scrolling games like Mega Man, Zelda II, etc...

PS Plus subscribers get Strider for free come July. If you haven't gotten it already be sure not to miss out on this opportunity.

Agree, although I'm fairly irritated that I paid for it just a couple of months ago.

So is anyone else here playing Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition on Live?

I've been killing so much time playing that it's not even funny. Doing a lot of Ranked Matches where I just go around challenging random folks (I turn challenge off if I'm doing Arcade off).

I tried it right after it became free but I suck at it so bad, it's kind of pathetic. I've been playing some of the other free gold games lately, I've done a little bit of dead Island, and a hell of a lot of Saints Row the Third.

Seriously, as unpolished and dated as it is compared to GTAV, It's a a hell of a lot more fun to play.

I've gotten about 35 hours of play time on SR3, and I've only been playing it for about a week, so I'm really enjoying it.

i have sr3 as well on steam but paused 10 hours into it damn too many backlog of games. i'll get back into it if i finish 4 lol (i think i read you brought 4 as well)

this is a bit of interesting news for ps3/4 owners. with the ps3 latest firmware, the dual shock 4 controller can be used as a bascic controller registered under bluetooth devices in the settings menu to work as a basic controller. but the home button doesn't work (yet) going to try it when i get a chance

Missed my point. The controller worked on the PS3 before, just not wirelessly. Just a little info for others.

If Home and rumble are all that's not working, awesome. I can use the Home key on the remote.

And I can use this to play Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn, which is out now. I just wish the DLC wasn't so expensive.
