Whats Lying on your Workbench MK IV

This could be the chance to make an A-Wing that you like!;)

My solution: the model is in the trash.

Wanted to save this as a tomcat, but that's not going to happen. Honestly, I'm tired of trying with projects; they never seem to come out right anymore. And with space at a premium now, I have no room for "crash dioramas" or projects that fail (not to mention having to explain to the wife that they failed).

Just sick of this $#1t....

I'll see you folks around.

I'm in the same boat sometimes. Recently, I've considered a couple of times just packing up all the 'stuff' and taking a break. Do what you need to, but also keep in mind you are a great modeller with some really fantastic builds.

@MechTech hahahahahha yeah.

workbench stuff. Kid wanted to build something and decided for this:

Trumpeter Su-47 1/144. I got this years ago for 1,57€.

fun little kit. Build up in less than an hour. The kit will not be painted. My kid doesn’t care hahaha

This morning the kid told me, that the plane should be black, like on the box. So that is what I did.

masked the canopy and made it black.

But that is not all. The kid demanded more, and as he always plays with my old VF-1 Valks, I thought it would be a good idea to build one for him.

so that is what we did.

And it was a good opportunity to test the Chinese beauty airbrush thing.

surprisingly, it did the job. Took a while for me to adapt to the single action. I am used to double action for 25 years now. But it worked out well!

total build time: ~5.5hours. I finished two kits in 2 days on one weekend. Haven’t done that in a while.

the kid doesn’t want me to add any of the decals, so we are fine with the colors he wanted. The Chinese air brush seems okay so far. Lets see how long it lasts.

this was mostly a vanilla build, no putty and only little sanding. The Hasegawa VF-1 mold really seems to be degrading much. The ejection holes have mold ridges as well as a lot of the pieces. Stuff you see on older kits most of the time. Remembering my first Hasegawa VF-1 in 2002, that was a more „seamless“ experience. And the other one from 2010 was degraded already. This one (build today) has the 40th sticker. The degradation is crazy. I think, with some love, the Hasegawa VF-1s can be nice, but I‘d recommend the Plamax one now, which has a way better build experience now, and modern tooling.

I still have one VF-1, one VF-1 super/strike and one VT-1 in the basement to build. Next time I will invest more time to make a decent build and will craft some extra parts via CAD and 3D printing. :)

@Thom Yeah, I got some hot dogs haha. The build was really quick and dirty. I didn't even have to look into the instructions because I have build so many Hase VF-1s already haha.

@arbit of course! Also - really nice Guld, he looks like the real deal.

Already deep into the next project. A 1/35th JLTV to probably join the previous Abrams in a diorama of some sort.

Not able to find a crew that fits this thing. Might just do a couple of figures standing outside the vehicle.

OK, FINALLY calling this thing DONE! Sorry for all the photos, but in case anyone wanted a better view, it's there now. I COMPLETELY redid this build from what you may have seen before. It was just the projectile and the gun. Now its the equipment and base to go with the gun plus the crew. Even the gun mount has parts that were redone.

For those that get disappointed or frustrated with your builds, EVERYTHING on this build has been redone MULTIPLE times! So don't give up on what you're doing.

SORRY, my camera made many of the photos (especially the figures) look like they were paint by numbers - it got TOO digital!

The projectile completed and weathered. I stripped and repainted the driving band on it several times too - just in the past couple of weeks! Getting that metallic look was tough. I wish I could do better. The top number on the projectile is real. You can go and order it in the U.S. DoD supply system.😉

1-72OMDio64.jpg.a6c51c6ee07415fae193d4e955f5d3a6.jpg

Last piece completed for the gun mount (it's the black part that sticks out on the lower left side now).

1-72OMDio66.jpg.dc26a5cd4a1a5c2d6d06eff22a38def7.jpg

The gun chief, or, "Little Orphan Annie" with those eyes🤣 and gun crew. Figure painting is NOT my strength! By the way, use WATER COLOR colored pencils! They're awesome and beat a tiny paintbrush any day of the week! Water can be used to blend or clean off what you did. They also smear/blend nicely too.

And everything running. EVERYTHING runs off one "D" battery (1.5volts). The motor (to give it the right speed) and the LEDs run a a "joule thief" circuit to up the voltage. One LED is a color changer, the other is a tealight candle LED. Nothing fancy.

OMG!!! @MechTech that's absolutely amazing.  Are you making this for a naval museum?!?!  Wow, just absolutely incredible.  What scale is that?  I've got one of those fuse thingys on top of your shell - I always wondered how big the rest of it was.  It's heavy and doesn't turn anymore, but I thought it was a nice paperweight.  Now I know where it belongs!  I'm just absolutely floored.  You are the Master!

Amazing work. I love watercolor pencils as well. They can color like paint or be as precise as a sharpened color pencil and surprisingly cheap for a full set of colors.

Well, that’s something to look forward to

Yeah; it's this, only in white and formerly a "coast guard" helo:

ertlcopter.jpg.ad2a103b658b03c080af2e309e468641.jpg

It's about 1/32 scale ( measures 14 inches from nose to tail); I found what was left of it at an antique mall, and with the main upper being diecast, I should be able to kitbash it without the blasted thing falling apart on me.

(I hope.)

I plan on doing a limited rear command center for Dom (won't be able to see much from the front), and a full front cockpit for Stringfellow Hawke. Undecided about doing a Caitlin O'Shannessy figure as of yet (kind of on the fence about that).

Weapons: may do them as magnetic "plug-ins" that fit onto the exterior. Neodymiums should work.

This is something to take my mind off of things, as I had yet another tragedy amongst my models and figures: my custom scratchbuilt 1/6 Christopher Reeve Superman figure got knocked off the shelf (loud "boom box on wheels" came by on the street and vibrated everything badly) and the figure shattered (total loss) and the hand-sewn outfit was melted (landed on the radiator).

(That one hurt. )

I'm not going to try rebuilding it, as we have other issues cropping up, and my sculpting skills for faces are no longer what they once were. Also wrestling with Ebay and an idiot seller who's trying to rook us on an item. So, I'll just continue with this.

Stay tuned.

Sorry to hear about Supes, esp when you put so much work into it. As you say, it hurts. Modelling can be cathartic - and frustrating! But then that's modelling in a nutshell.

But love the idea of doing a 1/32 Airwolf! That's taking modelling into a corner, slapping it around a little bit and showing it who's boss.:good:

@wm cheng Thank you, I am VERY  honored! Sorry, this is just for me. Our local museum is an air museum, so no surface warfare stuff. It is 1/1 scale and 1/72 scale.

I have two other fuses (from WWI) and they make GREAT paperweights for holding down parts that are drying too! The original and cast for this one are below. At least they are stamped what they are, vs a lot of other old fuses.

I only heard about them a couple years ago through my daughter taking an art class. I’d used pencils and colored pencils in modeling, but hadn’t really heard of the water color pencil thing. I know AK has weathering pencils and they’re the exact same thing, but way more expensive and with far fewer colors. They’ve got all the advantages of using water colors and color pencils in one item. I wish I knew about them a couple decades ago when I would paint minis for stuff like 40k.

Thanks you (and Thom). Been a lot of bad instances lately.... just trying not to think on them too much. :( As for Superman: thinking about buying the classic Mego 14 inch figure and a pre-sculpted 1/6 Chris Reeve head and using those to recreate it. Less work and batter materials. Just need to resolve the issue with an idiot on Ebay rooking me on something I ordered 😠 )

As for Airwolf: already removed the metal post for the rotor blades and drilled through the metal to recreate the actual rotor mast assembly.
