HG and Robotech Debates

Recommended Posts

OH COME ON! Am I such an oddity?

You've heard me say this before, so it shouldn't come as any great surprise...

Yes, you are... and I'm surprised you're surprised about it. You've seen what the Robotech fandom is like these days with your own eyes. It's been kind of dodgy ever since the mid-90's, but ever since robotech.com opened it's become more of a cult than a cult fandom. Now that the renewed lack of forward motion and the strenuous efforts of Tommy's goon squad have succeeded in driving most of the casual and moderate fans away from the Robotech franchise, the only ones left are the frothy-mouthed fanatics of various creeds and the handful of fans who continue to love Robotech quietly and/or from a distance.

To be blunt, an outspoken Robotech fan who hasn't sacrificed his sanity and sense of perspective to the great Carl Macek and his prophet Tommy Yune and isn't drinking the Harmony Gold Kool-Aid was practically unheard of when you started your podcast, and that condition's in no danger of changing.

If there was an Invid space puppy around, he'd kick it because that's just what guys like him do.

:D

Best quote ever!

I'm with Jason and JT...RT fans who not only enjoy Macross but have no qualm at all with either side of the debate. Guess we should form our own Oddball baseball team...

At this point what basis is there really for any debate. Recent history is enough to say, Macross Frontier > Shadow Chronicles. A fully animated 25 episode series with superior animation, characters, story, production. Lets not even count the series, False Diva all on its own is much better. And this is not to thrash RT, there could be so much more that can be done with RT but sadly the peeps at the head of that ship have already torpedoed the franchise to be a mockery of what the vast majority expect it to be. Had I known back in 1986 when I tuned into WPIX Channel 11 in NY that my favorite cartoon would turn into what it became...well who knows.

Sighs....an oddity on both sides of the coin....

Since I don't view Robotech as a godly, commie destroying, anti socialist, liberal crushing, heaven ordained, blind devotion to the Blessed Sacrament of Harmony Gold and Shadow Rising......OMG he's a Macross Purist!

Since I have no reason to bash Macross......OMG he's WEIRD Robotech fan!!!!!!!!!

The story of my life....LOL! ^_^

And YES Seto, I have seen the fandon which I am part of and you got a lot of cool people. People who came along for the ride on my show and enjoyed it. I don't need to boast any numbers or "downloads" to know that The Protoculture Times had listeners around the world because the listeners themselves let me know. And in the end, even after the ribbings you'd give me (and there were many! :p )...I think you understood what I was trying to do and that's I did it for fun....never "downloads". :D

Now if people want to throw what amounts to a temper tantrum and keep with the whining and moaning about how I don't follow the "party line", NOT denounce or "punish" those who don't keep the RT faith... and that I have my fun with HG and their mods and don't drink the Kool-Aid they're serving....in the end it amounts to a flapping of the jaws....and ya know....after a year of it...while they flapped...I interviewed A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLING AUTHOR! (Sorry, I just LOVE saying that!...LMAO!)

Funny though...I never get any hate mail about it.....ahhh...the beauty of email filters.

Excuse me a second while I give a big shout out to Mother Superior and her Nuns over at the Church of Robotech! Hi there....and yes I know the penance....12 Our Tommy's and 8 Hail Kevins....

But in all seriousness, yeah I know I am that crazy Robotech podcaster who thought the mecha was cool, but could never explain its technical schematics. Who kept yelling IT'S ANNIVESARY TIME BABY! P*ssed off the holy harbingers of the Robotech faith. The guy who misses his "Little Guy".

AND for some reason where Robotech celebrities had a fun time getting interviewed by yours truly.

Ya know....it's good to be an oddity.... ;)

Zen72/JT, is by no means a troll. He's posted several times in this thread, or one of the previous in the super thread. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, as it is related to Robotech, and does relate to some of the topics here, like the LAM, some drama, and acknowledging the original series.

Yes, you can be a total Robotech fan, and engage in the discussions here, and not be hated. There are other Robotech fans who post in here and in other threads, and all are welcome. It's only been when they come here only to insight flame wars and such, and spam, both of which Zen72 hasn't violated.

Now, in regards to the Regent, I do agree that he was one of the more badass villains of Robotech. At least in the novels, he wasn't so complicated, like they try now to do with EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in the entire franchise. They have so much empty backstory on every character, and everyone is so closely related, it confines the large story that's there, but that's the problem with the current writing and such.

It's why after the original 85 and Sentinels, I really don't like anything after. Shadow Chronicles is just one glorified "buy me cause I character drop" show, with no content. Had they actually created more characters with no affiliation to the previous shows, it would've been better, but it's a problem that they've forced themselves into long ago. The great thing about Macross, is that while there seems to be at least one character that is related to a previous series, OVA, movie, or whatnot, the shows don't stick to one central character. It's a big franchise, and to confine it with a drawn out plot of what happened to some damn ship like in Robotech is doing it a disservice.

Also, what has been discussed here as well, is that the issue of confining the franchise also shows a lack of creativity. Even though Sentinels was hoaky, and had some issues that weren't so great, at least it was more of an attempt at branching out, than staying retracted in a small box. I think Carl at least knew that Robotech needed expansion beyond the original episodes. People can agree or disagree, it's my opinion on that. I'm not debating if Carl was a great story teller or not, as I can only go off of all the info I have, which isn't much. It's just an observation on the two different approaches of Tommy and Carl. Personally, I'd rather have the hoaky "saturday morning cartoon" Sentinels that's over the top and grand in some sense, over the current story that tries too hard, seems forced, and lacks any effort.

*mumbles* Put that linkie on your tag line & people might take a look... otherwise it just looks like spam...

Good Lord... I can do the same exact thing.

1: Buy a tri-fold wallet for about $1.00 at the dollar store.

2: Embroider crappy insignia for about $2.00 at a tailor shop.

3: Insert into wallet packaging, a numbering card for collectors. Print in gold. $4.00

4: Sell it for twice as much online.

5: Get rich from the few hundred gullible fans, willing to purchase a 3 ring/triangle made for circus wallets.

6: Also include, a flier stating that land is available for sale... buy now, and will throw in a new bridge from the San Francisco Bay.

Considering that I bought an "I <3 Minmay" keychain and "Macross F: Merry Christmas without You" coffee mug, I'm not sure I can cast stones here...

however, those are the 'not displeasing, yet... "oooook" ' types of merchandise, at least they are made with some thought. As for the wallet, it's as if a 'sober/rehab' artist used a Spirograph to create the logo design.

Me, I purchased the FMP 2nd raid cup... and used it proudly in the office for coffee breaks... (or wherever coffee is being served).

OMFG??!!!

How have I lived my life so far without a crappy Shadow Chronicles REF wallet??

R

As I said in my last post, $h!t on a stick and put a Robotech label on it. I wonder just how the store is doing compared to when Tom was running it. Tom, I'm sure you would've fought that one. However, if you had to put it in the RT store, would you have made a minimum order? If you had to create a different product to sell with a similar price point, what would you have sold?

It's one thing buying trinkets and little nicknacks here and there for a show. There is so many items to choose from, so MacF has that freedom to sell just about anything they can, from Manju, to drinks, to keychains, to full blown toys, figures, statues, model kits, etc. But when you're supposedly a big franchise and doing so well, and all you can do is try to sell a $5 wallet for $18 and only have a far limited list of like items, don't try to tell me that the franchise is doing oh so well, and they keep trying to cram all this unwanted Shadow Chronicles crap down the fan's throats. It must be frustrating to have a "new film" out, and nobody wants to really buy the crap associated with it, but the Macross stuff sells, and people ask for more of that, along with Southern Cross and Mospeada merchandise. I wonder how they feel knowing that the work they've done, while actually finishing a film, has had so many criticisms with it. It's much more than they expected, I"m sure.

Both Macross and Robotech need to move past with the same old cliches: Macross with the love triangles & singing idols and Robotech with the alien invasions. MF's Ranka/Alto/Sheryl triangle was always a little forced to me like they had to establish right away. Maybe it was due to the series being limited to 25 eps but it lacked the mystery of Hikaru/Misa/Minmay. Though I liked how it was handled in the movie. Shadow Chronicles did used the tired plotline of being invaded by aliens though they did it pushed it from Earth but to their space stations. That's why I liked Tom's script because the humans came to them; almost like the earthlings were invading the aliens.

If this was the Spanish Inquisition (in before Monty Python), you'd be considered a Marrano, in that you would be persecuted by both sides for liking the other.

Then again, so would I.

This reply probably belongs in another thread but to quickly comment on your love triangle opinion. I believe the Alto/Ranka/Sheryl triangle was by far more complex then Hikaru/Misa/Minmay. There was no mystery at all behind it, on the contrary it was pretty straight forward...anyways back on topic.

That wallet is soooooooooo cheese I think people in Wisconsin are calling HG for the recipe.

I'm one of those fans who wants more Southern Cross! An MPC Hovertank or AJAC would be a dream come true, of course it'll never happen.

:edit:

As for the love triangle thing I would say that Frontiers triangle is more "mysterious" in the sense that it's open ended. There's no clear winner, so it's up the the audiences' interpretation to decide who ends up with who, where as SDF:M makes it very obvious early on that Hikaru and Misa are meant to be together, and it's more about watching Hikaru grow out of his juvenile crush on Minmei.

And regarding the whole recycling material argument: I think that a big part of why Macross can get away with it and Robotech doesn't is that in Macross, while certain premises and characters tend to show up over and over, every time the actual characters and stories themselves have enough depth and complexity beyond those general archetypes that each iteration remains fresh and interesting.

The characters and stories in Robotech however have virtually NOTHING to them beyond the broadest token tough chick/evil villain/young hotshot characterizations and generic alien invasion plots.

I know you're trying to give Macross and Robotech some kind of equivalency, but the comparison doesn't hold up. Love triangles and singing are part of what make Macross different from the other mecha shows out there. Alien invasions do not make Robotech different in the slightest.

So yeah...Macross without a love traingle and songs...might as well wish for a Terminator movie without any machines or a Star Wars movie with no space ships, light sabers, or alien creatures.

But hey...nice try. Your devotion to Robotech is kinda touching.

Give unto Macross what is Macross...

And give unto Robotech what is.....Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada..... ^_^

That's the new grab bag gift at convention panels. If you ask a cooperative question like "I love the wallet. What does the symbol on the wallet mean?", you get the wallet.

edit: BTW Tom, it was appreciated that time I got the soundtrack after asking about HG's support of Michael Bradley. I'm glad it wasn't an MPC because if I wanted an MPC I wouldn't have sold mine.

A wallet for Shadow Chronicles? Wow, I'm surprised they didn't make a Janice mousepad like these.

tsk tsk, didn't you know? The Shadow Chronicles and RT.com are family friendly!

Even though most of the sites users are middle aged men who can't say "fart" without offending Steve Yun :D
