I have a gateway 02/03 500 w/256 ram and 128 geforce graphics card. I got 80 gig, 40 int/40 ext. Its not the best, but it handles high caliber games well on and offline with my cable connection. Graham Posted November 12, 2003 Share Posted November 12, 2003 Well, my first computer was a Sinclair ZX Spectrum and I liked to play Manic Miner and Ant Attack. The Spectrum had some fantastic games. My computer now is very old and slow and is powered by a very fat hamster which runs on a treadwheel thus providing power. All calculations and memory functions are handled by a senile chimpanze who through an unfortunate accident only has three fingers remaining, so can't add up very quickly. But seriously my computer is nothing special, just a Pentium III 700MHz(?) CPU with 10G hard drive and 256RAM. I have no idea if I even have a graphics card or not! I have no interest in online gaming or computer games and just use my computer for email and websurfing, so it's fine for me. I do have a broadband connection. A GeForce2MX video card, with 64 megabytes of video RAM. A SoundBlaster Audigy. A 4/8/32x CDRW drive. A LS120 SuperFloppy drive. Lacking media and not using floppies much, the primary advantage is my BIOS ID's it as an ARMD(which stands for ATAPI Removable Media Device, but who really cares what it's SUPPOSED to be?). A Wingman Action gamepad, for, well, gaming(at least, games suited to gamepads). No fewer than 3 pointing devices(1 serial mouse, one PS/2 trackball, one USB trackball). 2 hard drives, a 20 gig and a 14 gig, both 5200 RPM. The Windows 2000 operating system. DVD Rom 52x CD RW 2x WDC 40GB HDD, one for Op sys, and programs, one for straight up storage. Oh, and my case is completely modded, by me. What can I say, got sick of the old beige beater. Not so sure about Mozilla, but I do keep Netscape 7.x around on OS 9 for certain CSS and Java-particular sites. Be sure to check into what kind of harddrive you're getting, Panther has a nasty bug with firewire hardrives that have a common kind of Oxford semiconductor that causes them to be completely erased. Some of the newer boards (notably the Nforce boards from nVidia) feature a memory controller that can access two memory banks in parallel to effectively double your memory bandwidth. You'll only see this feature in newer bleeding edge hardware (in the PC desktop world, anyway), so judging from the system you've described: No, you won't see any advantage using x1 512 MB DIMM as opposed to 2x 256 MB DIMMs. There won't be any noticeable difference in performance either way. On to "what kind of computer I have": Well, I have several I use daily (I'm a systems administrator, and have to babysit a datacenter full of Unix and Windows servers), but my main machine at home I use for most desktop-related stuff is as follows: Windows 2000 Pro SP4 Athlon 2400XP 512 MB DDR @ 333 MHz Radeon 9700Pro Soundblaster Audigy 2 3 HDD devices (2 in RAID 0), totalling 60 GB space (file server has 300 GB of space, mostly filled with anime avi's ) 21 in Sony Trinitron flastscreen CRT I use two desktops at work, one running SuSE Linux and another running Win2K. My Win2K box gets most of my work, but I'll dance for joy the day we can finally toss Outlook (and with it MS Exchange) out the window for good. I'm itching to try out those new Athlon 64's, but I'll wait for the price to come down (and for that 64 bit Windows to be released to retail). (Some aspects may be slower--like launching, but page rendering is much faster.) Netscape 7.02 also gives you tabbed browsing, something to look forward to with NS 7.1 or Safari. Surprisingly, Netscape 7.1 is faster than Safari under OS X, again in my experience. I haven't had very good luck with Mozilla; Chimera seems to work but for some reason I keep going back to Netscape. As for systems. Home: SuperMac S900 upgraded with a G3/400, 368 megs of RAM, a couple of 2 gig hard drives, a Voodoo 2 card, and a USB card for use with cheap peripherals like my scanner, printer, and no-name mouse. Works fine under 9.1 for general computing and web browsing and older games. (Oni runs well on it, and it's great for Hornet, not sure about Falcon as I haven't really tried that piece of &$%@ since my last hardware upgrade). Framerate on big videos isn't so great but smaller mpegs/avi/shockwave are fine. I'm tempted to try to upgrade this one to "current" standards but I think it will be more economical to just run it into the ground and buy a new Mac at some point Work: G4/733 with OS X 10.2.6. Took a deep breath and jumped into X shortly after I set it up on my desk. 10.1 wasn't quite worth the trouble, but after 10.2 I've never looked back. But still unsure which one to pick. ATI is still pretty much on top at the moment, but Nvidia's offerings are nothing to sneeze at. According to Pricewatch.com, a Radeon 9800SE w/128 from Sapphire Technology can be had for $155 w/ free FedEx shipping at Newegg.com. Sapphire makes good, stable, reliable cards. The 9800 is clocked slightly higher than the 9700 and uses slightly faster RAM. I don't know what you'll be able to find locally, so perhaps there is a place that might have a better deal. If I were to upgrade from my GF4 Ti4400, I'd more than likely get at least a 9800.
