Are movie audiences ready?

Not at all. Go re-watch SDF Macross.

So...Carl Macek understands Macross better than Kawamori does? Wow.

Although...thinking about it on the way home from work today...I wondered if you weren't right. I was thinking I got an unfiltered view of SDFM before I saw M7...but I really didn't. I watched it raw, but my Japanese wasn't good enough to understand much. So maybe I have been viewing SDFM through an M7/Plus/Zero/Frontier lens.

Either way, I will say that although yes, they got rid of Bodolzaa with missiles, it was the power of love and song that got them into a position to be able to blow him up real good.

(Finished reading 4 pages long of debate...)

Hmm, movies about singing idol ending war. Well, American Idol didn't stop the war either  In fact, each time I saw American Idol on streaming sites, I want to wage war against something.

I think its only in anime we can find singing truly affecting a course of war (Macross 7/Rah Xephon/the Black Metal thingy). In live action movie, its only used for OST or for musical opera.

It would be different if "The Sound of Music" depicts the ending of war by singing directly to Hitler.

My conclusion, NO.

The US handled Star Wars... even the second trilogy. Minmay's singing being something a cultureless enemy finds worth saving isn't too much harder to buy into than dropping a bomb on something not much larger than a womp rat (or however that old star wars quote goes). Hey, we spent how many millions on a movie whose premise was a mobile planetoid base that didn't have a shutter on an exhaust port? If you handle the subject matter well anything can happen. Of course, you can always RT it up by just using singing as a culture shock too.

Now M7 song power, and or peace and complete understanding as a result of hearing a song is, dumber than dog-sh!t. So, no.. An American audience would not accept this in any way because its just stupid. In case you are confused, I reject this too.

"'They' say that the best weapon is the one you never have to fire. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once. That's how Dad did it, that's how America does it... and it's worked out pretty well so far." :)

wow. just.... wow.

Hehehe, I figured that would convulse a few stomachs :)

But that was meant as a biting satire though.

yeah, i know. :p but it's the closest thing i can think of right now. trying to single out a film that gives music a memorable role in warfare, space or earthbound (i'm sure there is), but i can't remember one just yet.

EDIT: WAIT!! one just popped into my head... Full Metal Jacket where they sang the Micke Mouse Club theme at the end. does that count? :p

No, I said watch SDF Macross again. How you got your statement out of that is beyond me. Unless this is "Make Random Statements" Day?

Minmay's singing (representing human culture) helped divide the Zentradi forces (while throwing the "loyal" faction into disarray) , which allowed the UNS and their new Zentradi allies to blow the hell out of the Boddolezer fleet. That's not "love and peace", son, that military might. Breetai and Exedol didn't start making out when Minmay started singing. They opened up a can of whoop ass on their brethren.

When exposed to human culture, the Zentradi realized there was more to their lives than constant warfare. To some this was extremely shocking, to others it was enticing. I suggest you spend less time reading what Carl Macek has to say, and more time watching SDF Macross.

well, most wars are only stopped when one side wins it, anyway.

Well, the notion that Minmay's singing made everyone all lovey-dovey, dreaming of butterflies and pretty flowers, and that they all just laid down their arms and said, hey, screw this, lets hold hands and sing koom-by-ya, is totally wrong. There is no magic involved with Minmay, this isn't Macross 7. For the Zentradi, Minmay was simply the face of human culture, and it worked. And then they beat the snot out of the ones who resisted.

SDF Macross did not have a "peaceful ending", the war stopped because the UNS and its Zentradi allies won by killing the rest.

Wow.... 4 pages. Anyway, I wasn't specifically saying a direct Macross adaptation. Just a big budget Holywood movie with the same themes as Macross such as "There are just some situations that bigger guns won't save you" and "trying to understand the enemy instead of blowing the poo out of them". And yes, maybe even singing during the battle.

 Off course singing can't stop a fighting, just like when the Meltrandi retreat after blowing SDF-1 main gun, Minmay was humming ai oboeteimasuka at the background, but the real reason why the Meltran retreat is the sudden appearance of Bodol class mobile fortress with its 4-5 million escort fleet

Throwing confusion is much more probable, imagine when the communication channel is suddenly replaced by pop music, all battle coordination will be lost throwing it into disarray.

Now I'm wondering how the Bodol fleet would react if

SDF-1 is broadcasting pron movies instead of Minmay concert.

I'm thinking I should've found a better analogy for "Minmay-dismissiveness" than Carl Macek. <_<

Quite simply - Macek said he reduced Minmay's role from decisive war-winner top that of a cheerleader because he thought American's wouldn't believe in a singing idol saving the day.

I'm not sure why my arguing AGAINST the Macek position makes me "reading what Carl Macek has to say" too much.

Other than that, I think we agree more than we disagree. The Macross blew the hell out of Bodolzaa, but they couldn't have done it without the power of song and love.

HAHAHAHA! The rated "R" version of Macross. Two Miclones, One Cup! Classic :)

Obviously you haven't actually seen 2g1c because not only is it worse than an R it's breaks the boundries of XXX, it is by far the WORST thing I've ever witnessed two humans do. Even Joe Rogan cringed while watching it! As one human to another DO NOT watch it, you won't want to look at women for at least a week.

1) Politics-like yapping needs to stop. NOW. Human, American, Turd blossom. I really don't care what nationality you call yourself. Just post it anywhere else besides this website.

While I accept and abide by the decision that we are not allowed to talk about politics here, I will say that the fact that we can't is a little bit 1984'ish as far as I am concerned.

Please don't vapourise me mods.

I'm actually glad to see politiks are discouraged here at MW, too many other boards I belong to are pulled into an ugly cesspool of bickering and endless arguements over politics, the Galactic Senate, a Star Wars message board is a perfect example.

Once again, that's a very post-Macross 7 way of looking at things, and it really has nothing to do with SDF Macross. There is no "power" behind Minmay's music.

Most of the Macross stories have finished with a healthy dose of ammunition and memorable battles. The spin is that culture/music/understanding and courage/fighting/firepower go hand in hand in the Macross finales. SDF Macross, DYRL, Macross Plus, and Macross Frontier are all like this. The love/understanding helped achieve victory, as did will/strength of arms, but the message is that neither facet of humanity can succeed without the other.

Yeah, you can't win without Valkyries. Pity those who have Gundams.

The only exceptions so far have been Macross Zero and Macross 7, where the cultural/musical aspect of the series ruled the plot to such a degree that the courage/fighting/firepower aspect was excluded in the final analysis. Will/strength of arms could not achieve victory alone, but in these two cases culture/music/understanding could achieve victory to the exclusion of anything else. That's probably why M0 and M7 are the two weakest Macross productions; they are "war dramas" that sadly turn conceptually cannibalistic. :(

Now I see where the difficulties with Macross Zero lie: it's not like Indipendence Day. This thread is very instructive.

Idiots,

Don't you remember how after the Bodol Fleet was destroyed, some Zentradi revolted against the UNS? Even after hearing Minmay? Anybody?

In SDFM, there was no magic song vagina power.. It was just Psychological shock.

When done right, it could be a blast. What they did so good, was to say that art and culture can trump war, but they also did it while showing one of the best battle sequences in anime!

Does anyone know if this may be a blend of Macross and Robotech, or is it going to all from the US pwned version?

This thread is more like entertaining the thought of a Macross-type movie for Western audiences. If you want a live action Robotech movie, well, we got a thread for that.

I wonder how many people here have ever seen this before...

Known about that since the 90's. It was a bit hard to miss on the old compendium site.

Kinda sad that it never took off but I am also kinda glad, since when that project was being conceived it was likely that the movie would have ended up being a low-budget effort probably using models. I think that much more could be achieved with a lower budget today.

Enh, that might've worked in DYRL...but in the TV series they would've all been toasted by Bodolzaa's fleet.

But essentially, my point is that Minmay was more than just culture shock...I believe that she is THE reason why the Macross survived and won. In fact, I remember reading an article about (or an interview with) Carl Macek, where he said that he didn't believe American audiences would buy a "Singing Idol Saves Humanity" story, so in RT, she changed her into more of a cheerleader who would encourage the humans while confusing the Zentradi...which seems to be how Togo is viewing it.

Yep, and the fact that in both the series (and behind the scenes i gather in DYRL?) she got to know Breetai and Exedor personally, they became

friends, without her relationship with them the Macross would have been toasty smokey (boldoza was pressuring them, quarenteened

Bretai's fleet etc). Minmay is important not just for the song.
